          • . Damm it!! Finally managed to pick up and in next 15 minutes I reached home.

After parking, I realized how tired I was and my lower back had really started to hurt. But just happened to glance the rear tire; all the back pain vanished and I started drooling over the massive rears again!!

You shouldn't be stopping the engine anyways when the temperature is high . Before killing the engine just rev it a little so that the coolant circulates for the keeping the temperatures down. SBK gurus am I correct?

              • That was a good read

Another thing which is vital is to break in the pads. New pads need to be broken in, and it'll happen over 30-60 kms, depending on how you use them I suppose.

Some tips that I can give you now is to keep the radiator clean, check the pressures constantly (even a difference of 3-4 PSI gives a totally different behaviour characteristic).

And about the heat, not much you can do there. Get some leathers, like I told you on the phone

Gut the cat, but it'll only remove the underseat heat, not the heat from the engine, although the heat will build up a lot more slower without the cat con.

How are you running the bike in? Mototune it, or follow the manual, either way, Make sure you keep varying the revs.

About the battery, be very careful with it. I've realised the hard way, how quickly the battery drains in our conditions Get yourself a battery tender and keep it plugged in when you're not using the bike. It costs about 1.5k.

The frequent running of the radiator fan running bothers the battery, So Using high revs in stop and go traffic will only increase the engine temp making matters even worse, because there is'nt a lot of air flow on the radiator due to lack of speed.

Try to climb up through the gears as early as possible while keeping the revs below 3-4K. This will keep things manageable in traffic with the 180HP and help temps.

Do not touch/modify the Catalytic converter. Yamaha will void your warranty for the engine & exhaust system

The brake pads will feel better after the first couple of hundred kilometers, Until then ride carefully giving yourself enough lead time to brake.

Once your first 200KM are done, then find a good stretch of open road and try the brakes out to their/YOUR limits, learn what the bike does with just the front brake, just the rear brake, and both brakes used togther.

On a dry surface rule of thumb is 80%front+20%rear, on wetter surfaces use more rear brake but never over 40% or else you will skid and fishtail.

Braking with just the rear is a BAD BAD BAD idea.

You can turn off the bike, it does not matter, dont rev the bike while idling, it is pointless, the bike is designed to cool itself down you do not need to do anything to encourage cooling, let the fabulous Yamaha engineering do its trick, you just ride!!!

                  • Well put @sandy. Graduating to any sbk is almost like re-learning riding all over again. Like we discussed in Mumbai...just use the clutch bite point to get the bike rolling initially till you've unlearned the Pulsarish right hand rotation while getting throttle and clutch in sync for pick-up.

As others have said, the fans do manage to keep temperatures within limits. Switching off the bike when the coolant temp is anywhere above 105 degC makes for a rapid residual heat build-up in the engine. So it is better to keep the engine running which helps in two ways..1) the coolant keeps circulating through the radiator...2) the fans keep working without draining the battery. Revving up, just a little above idling helps as it makes for quicker coolant circulation without a too large heat addition, but that would complicate things for an unaccustomed rider in heavy traffic and that too in Mumbai.

Removing the cat would make a big difference towards heat build-up but as @ducati695 says, warranty would be voided.

And tyre pressure IS critical to handling as @rossiter says. Especially in the front tyre. Even 4-5 psi less up front and the bike weaves all over when turning.

During this ride, I keep one of the projector lamps disconnected to conserve the battery. Saves about 55 watts of power. (just takes a minute to get it back in action should I need to ride after dark). Otherwise with both projectors working and fans whirring away to glory in traffic, the horn sound used to be reduced to a whimper. And that too just when you need it the most. Revving hard instead of using the horn appears unnecessarily aggressive.

Just another thing here...even the R1 is just another bike...not a NASA built rocket. But it is a VERY VERY powerful bike with VERY VERY responsive controls. Regrade your muscles and co-ordination and then have fun.
I don't let my motorcycles interfere with my motorcycling...
