Thanks a ton Srini.....I have seen some people recommending Point and some others CDI .Which one you recommend from your experiance? And what wil be the cost to convert into CDI? If converted to CDI how about the perfection? And after opening the clutch case how can we differentiate both, I mean for a beginner?

I dont find a difference when we ride a point and a CDI.

CDI - No tuning required, no starting problems.

Point: Regular tuning is required, Back Kick possible. Can be adjusted for better performance.

I am sure there are more points to be added to this.

After you open the clutch case, you will find points mounted on the cylindrical coil. CDI will have a bigger cylindrical Cap fitter which will keep spinning once the bike is started.

But you can never decide if it is a Point or CDI by just seeing it or riding it.
Sometimes it can be identified by starting it. Else only option is to Manually open the clutch case and check it.

            • Open RHS case (clutch case) and you can easily make out if its a CDI or a CB.

CDI will have a neat metallic cap with no ugly wires coming out like medusa's hair.

CB will also have a metallic cap but with wires running into it from the top and of course you can see the points itself around the shaft. You can also see the sparks between the points if you observe closely.

My take on CDI vs Points :

It is a bit subjective. CDI's dont suffer from timing problems - easier to start , no "kick-backs" while pumping/starting and generally very reliable - in the sense there is no fear of going on a long trip and ending up with burnt out points.

The points vehicle is a lot more fun IMHO. The process of getting the vehicle "tuned" is interesting/frustrating depending on the type of the rider. I prefer to have some tweaking all the time so I prefer points to a CDI. But finding a right mechanic to do it is a problem.

Good quality Point sets cost about 60-80 rupees and the way the points setup is connected makes a difference to starting, performance, mileage etc.

Overall a CB bike is a lot more headache for the average user. CDI is for such people. If you are a garage monkey like me, then CB is for you.

                • Conversion from CB to CDI has been around for a long time now. I don't know if you get the same results on a converted bike as compared to an original CDI. I think you need to buy a different shaft or something and I don't know its availability.

I wouldn't convert my CB to CDI for the reasons mentioned above

                  • People now convert the Points to CDI, its costing around 5-6K, Not sure if any kits are available. Its not that easy.

Yes either a Roadking cdi's Shaft would do after a bit of grinding work.
