From my experience(in Sep 2011) you might find it a problem to load the bike from New Delhi railway station if the bike is NOT in your name and also if you do not hold a CONFIRM ticket.

The person incharge at the booking counter refused to book my bike since I was transporting my friends bike. A written letter from the owner also dint help.

The person at the counter at that particular time might follow this rule, others might not(From Chennai i was able to send my friends bike without any problem). Later I had to send the bike through a private train parcel service.

This is just a heads-up and you might not experience it this year.
    Dear Calibre,

Thank you for the information. Yes, we are dealing with these issues, especially the one about ownership.

If one does not hold a confirmed ticket, one can sent the bike as PARCEL and not as LUGGAGE.

    Regards,

    Maneesh

    • Hi Friends,

I, along with 2 friends are leaving for Leh from Delhi on June 28th by car. We will be taking the Srinagar route while going and Manali route while getting back. We have planned to hire royal enfields in Leh for our ride beyond and around leh. I need information regarding charges for hiring bikes and also if there is any security deposit included.
Also, since there are many experienced riders on this forum, can anyone advice regarding the documentation we need to carry, so we do not face any issues in getting permits or passing through sensitive areas.

      Thanks

      • A thought for those who are requesting to join icemans' group and have been turned down (quite rightly as the groups have already been formed)

Be assured that even if you go solo - you will not be alone. People tend to be very helpful there (even the normally snooty dilli waalahs!!) and bikers get special respect. June will be a busy month. Just huddle together in pairs or in threes and make the ride happen. Infact, when you sleepover at tents - you will make new friends and you can tag along with them. You have all the information you need in the signature of the iceman and in Ramkys maps.
Ladakh can be tough due to the whims of mother nature - it needn't be impossible because you cannot join a group.
PS: There is a wealth of information on this thread and on other similar threads on bcmtouring and team-bhp. Poach all you can and ride

                Dear The One,

I do not want to sound like a martinet but I honestly feel that you would have spent lesser time Googling for this information than asking for it on this thread. On reading your query, I Googled "hiring bikes in leh" and the first page came up with the link that I have posted in bold.

Ditto for the documentation information which I will ask you to Google on your own.

                No hard feelings, okay?

                Warmest Regards,

                  Dear Mik,

You are spot-on there. At times, these impromptu acquaintances turn to firm friendships which blossom into life-long relationships, courtesy the beauty and the savagery and the melancholia of the mountains.

How I wish I was able to describe the instances when I have helped out two-wheeler braves from '96 till '98 from Drass till Chumathang and Panamik till Pang. I gave them food at Drass, fuel at Pang and a drink at Leh. I will ALWAYS have a very soft spot for the bikers, powered or otherwise.

                    Hi Maneesh,

Firstly, thank you for the information and time. I have had tremendous help in charting my trip routes through your plan in the excel sheets. Googling for the required information was definitely on my mind but I felt it would not hurt to ask experts on this forum. I still believe more in the advice of people who have actually done things than anything else.

                    Best Regards,
                    The One

Hey Icemang, this is your generosity that you help them getting where they wanted. A lost person could appriciate any kind of help no matter how they come.

I am sure those men could never forget you in their life and yes you gain respect. Thumps Up for you all. God Bless!

                              Dear Yuvi,

I am so very sorry to not be able to acquiesce to your earnest request. Really sorry, old chap. I am having enough issues as it were. I do hope you will understand and empathise, Yuvi.

But as Mik said, just get on the road and I am sure that you will find similar solo artists who will find a common harmony and rhythm to gather together for a grand orchestra

I will meet you on the road for sure and we can exchange high fives, ok?

                              Warmest Regards,
