Its recommended that you run on tubeless tyres & carry a foot pump. In case of puncture, a simple & cheap costing puncture repair kit can come handy.Originally posted by erbalaji View Post

But the experience was divine. Only thing to take care of would be the AMS so pop in some diamox if your doc is ok with it. (Some people are allergic)
Also, "bad roads" is a relative term. In June 2012, the roads were in much better shape than in previous years and its only getting better. BRO (border roads org) Rocks !
Thanks Mik for the reply.
Well, I and a Biker friend are planning to get to Leh and back. We will be riding solo.
we are in 2 views, 1 ride all the way from Mumbai to Leh, ofcourse take the diffrent route aftre getting to Leh, like you have suggested.
or 2. dump the rides in train up to dehli/chandigarh/jammu and start from there.
Lets see how it works out.
Cheers!

That is one hell of an overplanned itineraryOriginally posted by erbalaji View PostHi Friends!

Sounds like a package operators itinerary to me.
Anyway, all the distances are comfortable and should be covered easily.
On Day 1 - Start early and reach before the Wagah closing ceremony (after checking into a hotel and dumping stuff there)
The Kargil war memorial is in Drass.
If you have train reservations - you should have some buffer time. For example, pang to manali in a day should be doable, but if you start losing some hours somewhere or if Rohtang is a mess - things could go haywire. I would suggest that don't stay at pangong Tso and make it to Upshi. Upshi to darcha/keylong should be doable comfortably.

1) we will be reaching delhi by train and it reaches delhi around 8' O clock in the morning, our expected time to ignititate our bikes will be 10 O" clock, so it's not possible to go to Wagah ceremony.Originally posted by Mik View PostThat is one hell of an overplanned itinerary

Too bad. Wagah closing ceremony is a nice patriotic adrenaline shotOriginally posted by erbalaji View Post1) we will be reaching delhi by train and it reaches delhi around 8' O clock in the morning, our expected time to ignititate our bikes will be 10 O" clock, so it's not possible to go to Wagah ceremony.
2) you mean that LEH-Pangong TSO-Upshi = 350Kms??
Yes, Leh - Pangong Tso -Upshi is doable comfortably, even with lots of snow on the road - as we found out last year.
You can check out the video made by Niks_Devil
Leh Trip 2012 - Climb for Chang La and onward to Pangong Tso (part 4) - YouTube
That day we did Leh (started at 6.30 am)-Pangong Tso-Lots of photography and reached Upshi by 7 in the evening. Even though we were delayed for almost an hour while climbing Chang La due to too much snow on the road and then i took a bad fall while coming back, in Karu. Which delayed us by another half an hour.
The roads are awesome all the way (relative to what you would normally get and except the last few km before and after Chang la) and the only limitation will be you and your machine - not the road.
Tank up in Karu and you are on your way.
This will also ensure that you are not spending the night at really high altitudes (can be nasty sometimes)
A thing to note: The weather can really screw up your most detailed plans anywhere. So, don't be too finicky about reaching a certain destination at the end of each day or seeing a certain "point". You will get basic accomodation in most places shown on the map. The point is to enjoy the journey and soak in the experience. Just have the discipline to start early each day.
Drop this plan if you are getting something like a full moon at Pangong - have heard that its awesome.
Oh and another point: Kargil slows down at night. It doesn't close down. You will get dinner options in the Bazaar atleast till 9.30 pmLast edited by Mik; 02-27-2013, 11:05 AM.

Thanks for your valuabe inputs.
i will make changes according to your inputs as an alternative one...
and do you have any idea about camera mount? i eager to fix my cam on GS150r..
and also tell me LEH trip can be done with Tube tyres? it's must to have Tubeless??

I would any day prefer tubeless tyres for their sheer convenience. Even if there is a puncture, the tyre keeps losing tyre pressure gradually, thus you can keep going by just filling it up. Tubeless tyre puncture repair is also not a big deal.Originally posted by erbalaji View PostThanks for your valuabe inputs.

About camera mounts - well my friend had a gopro and it was on a helmet mount. I believe there is a handle bar mount available for gopro too.

Thanks for the PM saquib. My thoughts inline.

We cross New Delhi, Haryana, Punjab
extimated riding 7 hrs
--- Riding time is more than that. Start by 4 am (cops with speed guns near sonepat, panipat and karnal - sometimes they challan bikes for going above 50kmph - so start early to avoid the cops who wont be on the street that early - also try and have the gobi paranthas at pahalwan/gulshan dhaba with the white desi butter - unmissable) so that you can check into a hotel- drop your stuff - and be in time to see the Wagah closing ceremony. Be there early as it can get quite crowded.
Day2: Amritsar- Srinagar : 355km
here comes the mountains: we enter J&K
First 90km good four-lane highway
The rest 275km slow and fast hill riding with straights
Riding 10 hrs
--- You should take the bypass from Samba. This is just after Samba market towards your right. Roads are bad but it will still save you something like 1.5 hours.
Day3: Srinagar - Kargil : 204km
Ride of dreams:
We ride through the notorious and tough Zoji La pass at 11640feet
We also visit the Kargil War Memorial
--- Don't miss riding by the Dal lake. Its totally worth it. Spend some time in the war memorial at Drass.
Day4: Kargil - Leh : 214km
A day of high speed runs and sticky hill tarmac at 12000feet!
Will cross Namika La pass at 12198 feet
Will cross Fotu La pass at 13479 feet
The Hangro loops will entice you!
will also drive through Basgo plains
--- Nothing special here and yes the tarmac is awesome at most places except some patches near villages and passes. I would suggest that start as early as possible and be there in Leh by 2 pm. You can get the permits issued that day only and then spend the evening sipping tea and having omlettes at the Shanti Stupa.
Leh has a vibrant nightlife so experience the various eating joints. My favorite is the tibetan restaurant.
Day5: rest in peace :P
have to take rest and take different permits.
-- Well you just need some bike maintenance. Get that done and onwards to Khardung La and beyond. Will give you buffer for the next days arduous climb.
Day 6: Leh - Khardung La - Nubra Valley : 134km
We will be at the roof of the world - we pose for shots, we cheer, we hug!
Have Maggi at the world's highest cafe
Purchase Khardung La coffee mugs and T-shirts at the world's highest shop
We continue to Nubra Valley after taking some rest
Our base will be Diskit, and will also ahead to the Sand Dunes
Total riding time is 5-6hrs
--- As i said, leave the previous day and enjoy a leisurely pace. Adjust itinerary accordingly.
Day 7: Nubra Valley - Pangong Tso Lake : 230km
Wari La at 17400 feet will be toughest
the detour to Karu (for petrol)
Night at the world famous Pangong Tso lake - we sleep at 13940 feet!
Total riding time is 8-9 hrs hours
--- Riding time is off by a few hours. Anyway, adjust itinerary accordingly.
Day 8: Pangong Tso - Tso Moriri : 180km
This route will never be forgotten
It is the epitome of isolation
No network - no fuel pumps - no civilzation only there can be love birds
We ride through a complete cold desert(no one should cry now)
Riding time is 8 hours
Camp night at Tso moriri lake
--- This will not be an easy day - but totally worth it.
Day 9 : Tso Moriri to Sarchu : 222km
Anothing camping night for us at Sarchu
Riding at high speed at the Pang flats - its tarmac!
Will cross Lachulung Pass at 16,616 feet
Will cross Nakee La pass at 15,547 feet
Will cover Gata loops
Riding time is 7 hours
We sleep at 14000 feet! again , remind you we are going to camp there
--- Should be comfortable. But, i wouldn't spend the night at Sarchu. Had a harrowing experience in 2011
If you cross Sarchu by 3.30 or 4, you can make Darcha your night halt. A very lovely place by the river. Also, gives you enough buffer for a slushy rohtang.
Day 10: Sarchu to Manali : 216km
here comes the favorite section as bikers can kneel down and scratchs your wheels
The Baralacha La is at 16500 feet
Will get fuel at Tandi
And lastly cross the Rohtang pass at 13000 with zero oncoming traffic
Night at only 6500 feet! -and then we reach manali and
Riding time is 7-8 hrs
--- Doable but can be hard if Rohtang is in a bad shape, which it can be. Try to reach Darcha the previous day and if you can skip Manali, stay in Kullu or Mandi. Idea is to have as less harrowing a last day as possible.
Day 11: Manali to Delhi : 585km
back to business - 320km hills, rest on good highways
--- Manali to Delhi is around 550km, not 320km. Start as early as possible and pray for the rains. It gets very very hot and dreary and dehydrating.
Please suggest whether the planning for day7, day8, day9 are good or not???
Anyways i am going to cut short these 12 days as I would be riding up from Bangalore to delhi and then also ride back from Delhi to Bangalore, this will also complete my half India trip too.
--- Since you are from Bangalore, why go through so much torture in the heat. Do one thing, at least make Bangalore - Delhi or Delhi - Bangalore as a train journey. Preferably the first part, as after the Ladakh ride, you will just want to get home as quickly as possible

Thanks Mik, that is really something very helpful.
Some doubts:
"You should take the bypass from Samba. This is just after Samba market towards your right. Roads are bad but it will still save you something like 1.5 hours."
that means after Samba market I should head towards Udhampur to Srinagar, skipping jammu right!!
I was planning to camp at Sarchu!!!! isn't it feasible to do so there????
for Day6, Day7 and Day8 what would could be an interesting itinerary which fulfill my wish to cover all the mentioned points and avoiding any detour or unplanned fallback??
And ya offcourse Manali to delhi is 550 out of which 320 is mountain roads. I may skip it also as i am not too much interested in it, but the missing part would be not enjoying the adrenaline booster route of Rohtang Pass.
regarding rest of the India trip for that too I have my route intact in my travelogue, anyways i will surely look your suggestion to avoid any dizziness or tiresome

Ofcourse you can camp at Sarchu though i am not sure if there are any designated camping sites. Or you can stay at the cheap options (something like 120Rs a bed) at the start of Sarchu before the bridge and checkpost. My problem was that i had a bad bout of AMS which made a sleepless stormy night in a tin shed contraption .
You can read about it here.

About Day 6,7,8 -- I think your itinerary is fine. But if you start a day early as suggested, it becomes easier. Regarding fallbacks - you never know
One day it will be all fine. Another day, the pass might be snowed out. Last year early in June many people couldn't cross over Khardungla one day since there was some land-slide. Just pray
Since you don't have any train reservations you can take it easy. So do have a buffer day in your plan. For anything in the world, dont miss the manali leh route.
Also, google up Ramkys maps. The pdf is a must have.

Thanks a lot Mik for suggesting me to go through your travelogue.
it really gave me some valuable points.
I am only worried about the part of my ride on day6 day7 and day8....i am confident of these days itinerary but the only confusion is would these part be covered respective to the estimated day as the terrain is usually bad and then landslides and mash of mud and brown water adds up more problem thus resulting in very long riding hours. I have read out in numerous travelogues and have found out that some part of routes takes hours to just complete mere 10-20 kms even.

Hi Guys, I am planning the leh trip. we are 3 people so far, 2 from hyderabad (including me) and one from bangalore. we are planning to ride all the way on the bike and back. I've read numerous posts in the past but i would still ask for advise here. We are planning 99% mid of August, rider from bangalore would be comming to hyderabad if we are to take a straight route through MP.
Questions:
1) Heard road in MP is not very good and might cause delays (keeping in mind the strict timeline we have). If we are to take the western route through Pune-Rajasthan-via pujabb and up would that be a good one or a straight route.
2) We are planning to ascend through the Jammu route and come via manali. how much time (days) it would take us to travel from (possibly Ambala) via Jammu Via leh and come back Via manila to Ambala again. That way we can plan the days it would take us to reach Ambala from Bangalore/Hyderabad (both ways).
I've all the other information and preparing it, and would ask the questions as they come to my mind.
Thank you.
