Might be Duke390 come to reality but CBR500 is something not this year for sure in India.

So i said go for something which is here and available, You already have a4L and rest can be loaned. But why from your post it seems like you don't earn, you are student ???

If that is the case it's better for you to be in range of 1.4L max

      • Ezil,

From what I've read, there seem to be two ways forward for you, neither is pain-free!
        1. Build up some more capital and get the Ninja 650
        2. Wait a few months until the upcoming releases are announced and confirmed, then take a pick between the Honda/Duke/Kawasaki offerings in the sub 650cc range.

In either case you may have to wait a few months, until then I suggest you get yourself to a trackday school which is a weekend of instruction and riding around the track. It will definitely help you develop your skills to handle the larger displacement machines you are targetting. It has done wonders for me.
The trackday training will also help get your mind off the whole "which-bike/when/how" situation you seem to be in. You'll be reading books, watching videos etc almost all the time

What follows is my opinion on the big-bike question. Do not apply the same to yourself, it is my reading and mine alone.
I have ridden a bullet for >10 years. An rx-135 for 5-6 years, a duke 200 for almost a year, and now a Ninja 650 for about 2 months. An MT-01 for a short time in between all this. Based on this experience, I have a few observations.
        1. In the city and on short highway stretches, I am more likely to ride hard, take risks and cut through traffic on smaller, yet quicker bikes like my Rx and Duke. Especially the Duke, because it allows so much precision and confidence in terms of steering/braking/power delivery.
        2. The smaller, quicker bike is also very lightweight, and I tend to manhandle it around town at times, because I know it is a forgiving bike, and if push comes to shove, I can brute force it into submission. Read choppy throttle, late braking, unnecessary redlining.
        3. On bigger bikes, the Ninja specifically, all the above gets tossed out of the window. Automatically I have more respect for the inertia, power and pickup of the bike. It is not as nimble, so I cut out all the quick and loose riding in the city. It is not possible to manhandle the bike. Any attempts will be catastrophic. Redlining in the city is downright criminal.

On the duke, I ride without a care in the world, and can get away with some very risky moves. On the Ninja though, I ride with a plan. Braking, steering and cornering are all planned and thought out well before hand. Very little room for carefree riding.

Because of the above, I feel that I am much likelier to face danger on the Duke, simply because I am more likely to take risks on it. On the Ninja, I'm riding to a plan, and learning the bike's limits and my own all the time. Is the Ninja capable of being blitzed across the city? Yes. But it is not easy, and not worth the risk. On the other hand, the Duke excels at being ridden at the edge all the time. Excuse me if I sound like an old fogey, but I am now convinced that the larger bike is safer. So get to a track day school, get your basics right, ride with a focus to apply the techniques you learn and consciously cut out the bad habits we all pick up over our lifetime. The jump to a 500 or greater cc machine is not something to fear, it is something you need to train for, to plan for and to grow into.

Well my parents agreed to the 4L budget because I agreed to wait for more than a year. But surely, this will be the only ride that I'll be getting from my parents if at all they plan to get a car sometime later. My next rides (600c or above) will be from my own pocket

In 3.8L OTR you can get a CNG company fitted New ALTO where you will get:
                1. AC
                2. No rain or Dust or Hot weather worries!!
                3. Can Roam with friends in one vehicle.
                4. No worries of falling from bike and getting hurt
                5. No worries on wet patches or Auto rickshawala or cabies rash driving
                6. Better lights and Power Steering.
                7. Music System...etc..

For traffic issues with small saving buy a second 125cc/150cc bike which will help you more better. It should come in 30k already you are saving 20K in 4L just add 10k and enjoy the college life more better.

CNG will be more affordable as compare to Petrol which your 200cc bike will drink.

Well If I can begrudgingly wait till 2015, I can get a N650R, but no I can't wait that long.

Well my dad has ideas of buying a car actually. But he's not discussed it openly with me. He's said it only to mom. I think he's keeping it as a surprise. But I don't think he would buy Alto, I heard he was discussing about some ride from Honda. Come what may, I'll be getting a bike for sure, not that I hate cars, but driving one is a tedious task. Its not like a bike where I can easily change my routes or take a U turn, not to mention the lack of proper parking spaces in cities. Even if they buy one, I would be the one who'll be driving that as well since I'm the only person in my house who knows to drive one.

                    • What are your thoughts on CBR 250 ABS?? the best bike with power...performance....and feature...

Currently don't go beyond 2L bike.... there would be people who will encourage you to buy ninja...or gt650 but it's better to be with cbr 250 ABS.... you won't regret....

Yes I am one of those who will tell you to buy a ninja or a 650cc bike because thats what you asked; while I leave the affordability/ whether you should buy or not to you. If you can afford it why not get the best your money can buy. The argument of a car vs a good bike in 4L will always be there. Once you have decided after due thought to buy a bike then just go buy it. If you go by the logic you should never buy a bike which costs more than Rs. 30k. But I believe that owning bikes don't have to be a logical decision. If you love to ride then a great bike in respect to power etc will only make it more enjoyable. You are lucky I would say if your parents have readily said yes for you to buy a big bike. I had to tackle the same (3.25L mein toh alto aa jayegi argument at my home). But now that I got it, I am perfectly happy and glad that I made a decision to buy a Ninja. But I have to add that I hate driving a car. A 650cc/250cc ninja also can be used to commute within the city. (ask Zimbly on 650 thread. He uses his N650 for daily commute without any hassles and also for touring). I use my N250 for daily commute with no problems. Only negatives I see for using my Ninja in city is the parking. People have a very bad mentality of fiddling/touching things that don't belong to them. So I have to keep an eye on my ninja every time I park it on the road side.
But if you have a lighter bike for city use then it does help in situations where you may encounter "daily" traffic jams or too slow traffic which moves at the pace of a man walking.
Since you have decided to wait till mid 2013 for buying a bike you have a good chance of owning a Ninja 300 or the Duke 390 which are rumoured to be here at or around that time. I am guessing these would also fit your budget perfectly. If other bikes are launched by then.. well..good for you.

Nothing like that Bro..I gave him the option because many times we fantasies about things but don't think the future.4L is not a small investment but neither too big. I gave him the option which he might have not known that a CNG comapny made car comes at less than that price. And he is a student, so i wanted to give him some more options. Why I din't buy a Nano ? Good Question. I had brought my currrent bike my self, So my budget was 1.3L Nano was over that LX model OTR 1.8L. I don't believe in EMIs.Secondly We already own two cars. One Aspire, One Scooter (total 2 cars + 2 bike/scooter)and that time new R15. Infact I was aiming for Ninja but din't wanted to go for loan funda. Loan free life is more awesome. So din't wanted to make a 3 cars and two 2 wheelers.Where as riders and drivers are I and my dad. What I think is first we should make aware about the investment to the buyer and later if he agrees and then he is well ready to buy and live with it.If TS has to buy a Ninja 650/250/Duke 390 R1 what ever he will buy regardless of any suggestions. But I will try to make him aware ones. later it's his choice.

                            • Why not keep this thread to be a "What bike?" thread rather than a " whether to buy a costly bike or not" thread (unless specifically asked)?
The buyer already knows the investment he is making hence comes the later stage of what bike to buy in 'x' amount of money. This is where we come in...

we have a heart of a biker and we dont even think in investing a good amount of money on a bike instead of a car. if i had some good money, i would have seriously got a litre class bike but we have to refrain from this because of the commitments we have.
and recent accident has made me thinking car is anytime safer than a bike
