I'm giving a quick places to visit in Chennai here, add to that Guindy national park & Vandaloor zoo, Mahabalipuram & Croc park . For shopping, you can walk into Spencer plaza, Ampa Skywalk mall, Citi Centre, Express Avenue all of them are very decent & upscale shopping complexes.

You may not be able to cover the entire things in one go; for instance, if you go to Mahabalipuram, you might be able to visit Croc park or get into Children's amusement theme park (if you've kids) at the cost to forgo others. May be you can get into on of those malls in the night for a dinner.

Not sure where you guys will be staying in Chennai; but here's a rough itinerary...
Have BFast in Chennai; leave to Croc park to reach around 10ish; spend sometime & reach Mahabalipuram by 12ish; roam around for sometime & have lunch; if you don't mind the cost, you need to try GRT Temple bay, it will be a good memorable experience. Start by 3ish from Mahabs & reach Chennai before 5ish. Visit Spencer plaza & spend about good 2-3 hours; have dinner at phase 3 (all phases interconnected).
