Tip of the Day

Hot days - molten Tar = slip/slide

Hot days create more than one problem. Tarmac roads with a greater than normal proportion of tar mixed in their making is one. The extra targets soft and gooey. Brake hard on it or take a fast turn and the bike can slide as easily on it as on spilt oil. So watch it.

I'm not really sure, but my mech says its a manufacturing defect with the sprockets and only changing them will solve it!! As I'm experiencing this with the new set of chain and sprockets, I'm going to wait till it becomes a real problems... hmmm
I am also hearing this kut kut sound from the front sprocket . I was thinking that the chain is too tight and so took my bike to a nearby SVC( New and small SVC). The mechanic checked the chain and found out the chain slack is not equal in all parts. The supervisor told me that the rear spocket is damaged and will need to be changed & the cost to be around 1000. The sound is coming from the front spocket and so i will wisely ignore his finding that the rear spocket is damaged.

i asked if it could be replaced under warranty but he said that sprockets and chain are not covered under warranty.

@Drifty : please tell after you get the chain adjusted. if it helps i will also get it done.

@Blazing 180: thanks for all the help. the chain slack is at least >15mm at some parts and a little bit tighter at some places.

Sure Bro,haven't got it adjusted till now. Will get it done tommorow by my mech & update it here as soon as I feel the difference.

Hey Pankaj, Has there been considerable difference when you shifted to Castrol SS?

I have done 1.2K Kms on my RTR 180 and have not faced any major problems, however there are these small issues which keep bugging me:

    • Gear getting stuck while shifting
    • Skipping of Neutral
    • Tappet Sound

I know the above mentioned glitches can be ironed out during second free service. However, since I will be undertaking my first long ride in the coming week, I just want to weed out or at least minimize the effect by shifting to a better quality engine oil.

All you experienced RTR 180 owners might like to put some light on this.

Switch to Elf Moto4Gold 20w40 mineral oil & feel the difference.Change the oil filter too.Gear shifts will be pretty much smoother & intensity of vibrations will lessen down a bit.

Thanks Buddy...will surely do that. As far as changing of filter is concerned, is it covered as a part of the first free service or they just clean the existing one? Also, can I go to my local SVC and get the filter changed or Ill have to get it done through my mech? Do the SVCs entertain such adhoc requests or they insist on getting it done through the servicing route? Is there any specific brand which I should request for?

Sorry for asking so much doubts, but since this is my first and probably my only bike, u can understand how it feels!!..

It all depends on how the mechanics are at your SC, i usually go to SC itself only if there s any small issue also , i know one mechanic there and he will attend to my bike even if hes attending any other bikes

I fully agree with Renny but but...i have beated P220 number of times, not in drag race but till 0-100 may be what ever is the reason, because for 180, the initial punch that it gives in pickup is unbeatable in its class. But ofcourse the top speed and a long drag race will of course throw 180 away its 220 vs 180 guys.... but of course it can beat R15 pretty easy i dont know much about a drag race, but i have ridden that R15 no doubt its a amazing machine but i didnt felt it is quite impressive in pickup can be beaten easily, dont know about a long race.......

Actually i had started using castrol SS after the second service and i remembered that after i replied to your post.(kms done at that time were 2220 km ) and since it was not the answer to your query so i had deleted that post but i guess you saw it .

but let me tell you this that the TVS oil has a rating 10W30 while the recommended grade for the RTR is 20W40. as soon as i spotted that during the second service i got it changed outside. and yes there is a marked difference as compared to TVS Engine oil. apart from the peace of mind the gear shift are much smoother and precise. I guess there is no harm in using SS after 1st service(experts please guide). just keep the duration in mind. if you have to go for 2nd service soon and if your SVC doesn't allow any other oil then it would be a waste.

We have had organised umpteen number of drag sessions and here is what we have experienced.

P220 DTSi v/s RTR 180: P220 is quicker in outright as well as roll-on acceleration.

RTR 180 V/s R15(older ones):RTR is quicker till 105km/hr but post those speeds R15 catches up really quickly and there's no stopping it once it gets past those speeds. I would say both are evenly matched when it comes to overall performance with R15 having a better top end.

Newer R15's are slower as compared to the older ones.

P220 is a speed/torque monster and it will mince both the bikes to smithereens!!

Did you guys get any chance to pit the bikes on twisties? Or did the lack of race tracks limit it to just straight line drags?
