  • Hello guyz,

I'm in dire need of a new cell phone. My budget would be max 8k.
LG is not my taste, so please help me out with this choice.

    My requirements:-
    Camera not that important
    easy internet access
    GPS
    big screen
    No candy bar design.
and No resistive touch. screen quality matters most.
    Should look good.

AGPS was developed to `Assist/ Augment ` GPS to decrease the track time and be more accurate , but some manufacturer have relied only on using the towers to fix and track!!!!!
I understand you had a bad time with your phone, but blaming "A-GPS" technology for it is not correct.

Let me tell you the basic deal. "Only GPS" uses the satellite positioning from 3 or 4 GPS satellites to lock on where you are... This may take some time.
A-GPS system uses network positioning/ WLAN Point location ID to assist in locking on, thus locking on takes lesser time than only GPS...

BUT, in all phones from major manufacturers having A-GPS, including my Nokia N8, you can lock on without using network access too... It might take more time and might not load maps (for some softwares), but that's it.

Your phone might be an exception due to some reason, settings, etc. but why blame AGPS technology as a whole.
Just like all ISI helmets are not same in quality, similarly phones too differ in their quality of sensors, firmware, available software, etc...

BTW was checking N8 specs and it too says GPS with AGPS , so any idea if it is satellite based or proper AGPS .
      cheers
What do you mean? Proper A-GPS is both tower and/or satellite based, depending on what's available.

My N8 can use anything- internal GPS, external Bluetooth GPS, etc. and any network- 2G, 3G, Wifi, etc... And using any or all of these resources, it manages to lock on to a good GPS Signal.

Signal Strength is strong and it works inside closed cars too.

The iPhone has an uncanny ability to locate you , my old 2G model doesn't have gps / agps at all , yet it usually locates me faster and more accurately than my samsung galaxy-pop which has modern agps .

by proper aGPS i ment what you understood ie weather a system depends only on satellite based GPS or also uses tower/network to track you.

            Without doubt .
It's missing too many features ... it doesn't have an fm radio .. you can't use it as a portable drive ( no usb-storage) , can't even play mp3 directly LOL . But the features it does have .. just works .... like no other device can .

            • GP Freak - not the defy then. I own one. its awesome but has rather high SAR.

Others debating AGPS - the cool thing is that there are hacks on android to REALLY speed up your AGPS. Think of stationary 30s (and often lesser) locks. Defy was not for my dad. I was simply looking for a phone with the lowest SAR rating within 5~7 k budget( no touch screen or qwerty )

Defy was suggested for my friend ;-)

The insides should be mostly the same. i think the same exynos processor has been over clocked .

So its simple, if i can carry it around, i might chuck my SGS2
