Didn't agree with you bro. It can surely save you, but DO NOT ever think that it will save you anywhere, anytime.

      Re. this thread's title

Accidents are not voluntary events. You don't 'participate' in accidents, you may be involved in them.

The thread's title needs to be changed accordingly.

        My first accident

Posted here to increase the awareness on road safety and on protective gears.

        Quick facts:
        Day: Wednesday, May, 13, 2009.
        Time: Around 7.45 PM.
        Place: Erode, TN, India.
I am driving vehicles for the past 9 years and this is my first accident.
        Driven solo.
        Vehicle: pulsar 150 3rd gen.
        Speed: 55+ kmph around city.

        How / where accident happened:
I am driving 55+ with my pulsar in the city. The place I am driving is full of hospitals, two villagers, a man and a woman both around 50 crossing the road. They are crossing blindly without seeing what is upcoming in the road. I am coming after the signals and hence I am in a good speed (read: in the city), saw them after a curve, suddenly, I lowered the speed, pressed both brakes and pressed the horn at all time. They took no notice and I am very near to them and tried to deviate from them but no use they are too close. My vehicle's left handlebar and mirror hit those two bastards. Immediately the steering changed sideways and I lost the balance. I fell off. Hitting in tarmac, my bike and me are flowing along the road and stopped after some ~5 mts.

After a few seconds, I realized that I am scattered in the road and thankfully there are only a few vehicles around the road. I saw those villagers; they saw me for a few moments and went away. I tried to stand and began feeling severe pain on my knees and around my left wrist.

Thankfully there are some fellow passers-by around the road and they backed me up. I am very feeble after the accident, walked slowly with the help of others and sat in front of a closed shop (because of election most shops are closed) my phone, watch are scattered around the road and some gave it to me. Thank you guys!

        The fault in my part:
        1. The speed around 55+ is the biggest mistake I think especially in the city.

        3. No hand gloves and my bare hand got a bad bruise.

        I blame:

        3. Pulsar's "mini" front brakes are not withstanding under harsh braking.

        Things I got:

        2. My mobile phone got some bruises.
        3. My trouser (right knee part) completely torn away.
        4. Watch strap broken.
        5. Received some scolds from the nurse.

        In the hospital:

        ...
later she fetched some bandages, injection and TINCTURE.
After some basic cleaning with distilled water (I think but not sure) and sponge and she is about to pour the Tincture into the wounds.
me: (again) pls dont use the tincture as the pain of my wound is very unbearable.
nurse: If you don't want the tincture then stay in your home. Why do you arrive here?
        ...
During dressings she poured tincture around the wounds and I am able to bear this prickling pain except around the left wrist wound and I began...

nurse: If you still speak anymore...I will pour some to your mouth too.
me: Completely shutdown...never spoke a word thereafter.

Things that my pulsar got (may I call "things lost?")
        1. Headlight heavily scratched.
        2. Bumper right side bent slightly.
        3. Right handlebar, brake lever scratched.
        4. Silencer cover (the one which is having the "Exhaustec" emblem) scratched.
        5. Front right indicator is badly damaged.

Things I learned: (and also to other fellow xbhpians)
        1. Never drive without a shoe (even in this burning summer)
        2. Never drive without a hand glove
        3. Must drive slowly around city
        4. A helmet (I always wear this one)
        5. A protective jacket is a must
        6. A leather trouser may be good but atleast, for a basic protection, must wear a jeans.

        Some surprises:
        1. No scratch in my helmet. Helmet is as good as before the accident.
        2. Shirt is in perfect shape. No torn or even a thread loose.

        I recommend:

For the price point, the glove offers leather exterior, cushion interior and there are pores in the inner palm that breathes air good. This is definitely a value for money plus protects your hands.

Here after, I will never drive a vehicle without equipping myselves with safety equipments. A harsh lesson learnt.

I have crashed four times till date.
By the grace of God all crashes have been just falls at low speeds.

First was when I was going down my office ramp..damn thing was very slippery due to rains. Bike fell on the left side. A bent leg guard and some scratches for me.

Next i was riding slowly at ~40 kmph and was taking a turn, there was a big pile of sand on the roadside. Some sand had spilled on to the center of the road. Me and my bike landed up in the big sand pile. No damages! (except some scratches)

The third and fourth time was just identical... riding slowly, had to brake sharply due to an auto cutting in front, bike slipped and I fell.

ALL four times, I have fallen because the damn rear tire of the pulsar always locks up and then the bike goes sideways, resulting in an eventual slip. I'm looking to fix this stupid problem somehow. Maybe I'll install a rear disc and put in ABS (!) in it.

All four crashes have resulted in no more than one replaced clutch and brake lever total. Lucky so far!

Riding since the past 6 yrs, I've neva had a accident till date... However, I've plenty of near misses and was saved everytime by the grace of god...

I'd just wanted to share one thing I've learnt... If your riding the bike alone then do wateva u, but if you have a pillion rider always remember his life depends on you... so drive slow and safe

recently met accident on my FZ things i learned

                1. Always wear your riding jacket never leave it at home even for short distance, cuz scratching your hand is more painful even on low speeds. That saved me once on my pulsar earlier (losing my 2k benetton jacket )

                2. always install leg / crash guards on fz will save your grips and clutch lever

                3. If ppl suddenly start runing while crossing the road do not sudden break just increase the speed and hurt them or make them run faster, cuz anyways ppl are going to find u at fault!

Today i saw a funny accident two people crashed head on one of the vehicle was coming from wrong side, so whats funny?
Both were Bajaj Priya (very rarely seen on roads now a days)
Both were same in Colour (Turqoise Blue like the Karizma)
Both people were 60+, and started fighting in the middle of one of the busiest road here with the vehicles still in the middle of the road.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

There has never been an accident which I "participated" in voluntarily and god forbid the bad sense required to do such a thing from ever overcoming anyone of us.

I have high sided while trying to corner. That taught me to take high speed cornering to the race track.

I have skidded on gravel, spilt oil and water. Since then, I have always taken it slow when I see any of these on the road. Also, fresh cowdung: it can cause major shit. And in India, its generally wise to go slow.

What accident I have witnessed or have been involved in, I have learned one thing in common - We are not invincible. Human body is so strong yet fragile to give up on minor accidents. I have known people dying just by a hit on a forehead and some surviving horrendous crashes. Whenever I ride/drive two things I always remember - God & Death. God - to save from any unintentional mistake and Death - to save myself from making an intentional mistake.

@Mods: Can you please change the word "Participated" in the thread title to "Involved". No one participates in accidents .
