Re: RE 350 Electra 2008, restoration and upgrades

Hi, My Bull is 4 months and 4.5K kms old, I have done 2 services and taking it for 3rd service next week.
I always wanted to own a Royal enfield and after reading several reviews and multiple test drives i booked a silver Electra and got it after almost 9 months(unbelievable right!!)
I've been having awesome time with my bull since then but there is one thing nagging me since i brought it home, Its the annoying rattling sound from engine which irritates me a lot (esp when i am not wearing my helmet) The sound gets significant in slow speeds. During both the service the SC guy said the sound will disappear after 10k kms are so..

Please let me know if its true the noise will disappear after 10k kms or they are waiting for warranty or something to be over and what could be the problem?

Are you sure that the sound is from the engine or the chain that has become more slack and hence touching some metal surface? At higher speeds, the tension is the chain is high enough to make it stay above the metal surface and therefore there is no rattling sound. At lower speeds, the slackness in the chain may cause it to touch the metal surface causing the noise. Also check that the teeth numbers (for chain tightening) on both the right and left side of the bike are properly set to the same number. Most of the Electra owners that I have met with have the setting on either 16 or 17th teeth. Also keep the chain well lubricated (recommended at every 500 kms). Check for the engine oil level too to ensure that is has not fallen below the minimum mark (if so, top up the engine oil). It is important to keep checking for loose nuts and bolts esp. those on the silencer that have a tendency to come off due to vibs. The screws on the silencer do create a rattling noise when they are loose. Check for the nuts on the petal ring near the beginning of the silencer (near the engine) to see that they are not loose. If they are, then the sound from the engine is strange as the exhaust gases leak through the gap and the metal silencer hits against the engine fins.

I own an Electra that has run 18.5 K kms and never once did I have a rattling sound from the engine. UCE engines are generally quite smooth. Most of the "noise" will be external to the engine.

The ride quality has improved- earlier when going through the cuts on bridges or roads would feel like a rattle. The meatier tire has bought down the impact and has made potholes and sudden disturbances on the road a bit more tolerable. And ohh yeah....the look has also improved with the fatter Tyre on the rear.
I have completed a 1800 Km trip to konkan coast and back. The rear fat tyre seems to have restricted the ocassional top speed of 120 to 110. Though i dont mind that, but once in a while it feels good when I touch 120 Kmph on the bull.

I strongly suggest that you wait till 2000 kms is done and your piston rings and piston move smoothly in the cylinder chamber by then. I have faced some very very strong problems in this department during my early days.

50 kmph on highways should be okay. But believe me when i tell you that at some point of time or the other you would be tempted to gun the bike. .
Get your bike serviced a week before you leave and you should be good to go. All the best.
                    - Keep riding.

                            Mods

                            Hi,
Finally bought in K&N E0900. I have not rejetted the bike since it is a stock replacement. Initially i did not see any significance improvement in pickup, slowly as i started zigzagging out of the trafic, I found the bike more responsive to accelerator touch and a slight improvement in pickup. I have yet to see what it does to milage. I will change the sparks to newer ones and see what difference it would make.

So don't you hear any misfiring etc? And hope you would have retuned the carburetor again after fitting K&N. BTW are you going to use a hotter spark plug or the spark plug with the same specification as present one.

                              Do update us about mileage

                                Re: Mods

The main thing I have noticed is that when the stock filter was there I used to get popping sound from exhaust when decelerating (probably my bike was already running rich) and holding the bike at constant RPM, i.e, going down a hill in 4th or 5th gear. That is not there now. I have yet to do a plug chop and see if the sparks are running ideally or other wise. I will check the milage once i fill up next time.
