well i was comin back from talacad on the bangalore mysore highway and found my headlights sufficient ... came back at night around 9pm , a lil adjusting of the headlamp worked for me , the high beam focus was perfectly where i wanted it and low beam spread was nice , but highway and night riding , so didn't use the low-beam much , the flash ( pass ) switch , helped compensate for oncomin lights ...Originally posted by shamanthnv View PostYou are right, Headlight of FZ is designed for city ride only. Highway illumination is terrible. While coming back from mysore to bangalore once, even though it was two-way divided road, i used to get blinded by opposite vehicle. I installed Osram NB, and illumination has improved a lot now.Last edited by nand15; 11-08-2009, 09:45 PM.People ask me , why are you cribbing about the BHP ? to them I say "MORE is never ENOUGH" xbhp.com

I am personally not satisfied with headlamps that are "sufficient" or "adequate". In the city or on a dark highway, safety is the most important. On a highway this means keeping up with the traffic. Being slower than other vehicles puts one at high risk of being hit from behind. On a highway, it also means being able to see broken down vehicles on the side of the road, potholes and pedestrians, all while maintaining highway speeds.Originally posted by nand15 View Postwell i was comin back from talacad on the bangalore mysore highway and found my headlights sufficient ... came back at night around 9pm , a lil adjusting of the headlamp worked for me , the high beam focus was perfectly where i wanted it and low beam spread was nice , but highway and night riding , so didn't use the low-beam much , the flash ( pass ) switch , helped compensate for oncomin lights ...
It's simple logic. If your highway speed is double your city speed (say 80 km/h and 40 km/h), you are traveling twice the distance in the same time and have half as much time to react. Logically this means that to have the same amount reaction time as at city speeds, you need to be able to see and recognise the road and what's on it at twice the distance.
AFAIK, the Pulsar 220 is the only Indian bike with an additional long range high beam lamp (the upper of the two). Many cars have the same; two headlamps on each side. When the high beams are on, all the headlamps are on.
On my previous Pulsar 180 Classic, I had changed the headlamp to a big round Autopal H4 unit. I mistakenly had fitted a long range type headlamp at first and I had noticed that the high beam didn't have enough spread for city use. This though, was perfect for high speed night highway runs. Since I hardly ventured out on the highway at night, I eventually changed the headlamp to a normal beam unit and that suited city conditions.

Can you please elaborate on this? Which H4 bulbs are long range and which are for city use? I did not find any such info marked anywhere on the h/l bulbs.Originally posted by iamvik View PostI am personally not satisfied with headlamps that are "sufficient" or "adequate". The H4 bulb is a type of bulb that has two filaments meant for high and low beams. The actual shapes of the beams are a function of the headlamp (reflector + lens). So a H4 bulb can be used for both normal range and long range headlamps.Originally posted by abhijeet080808 View PostCan you please elaborate on this? A close range lamp has a very wide beam spread. This is meant for use in bad weather when visibility is poor and is known as a fog lamp. This type should be mounted low.
A normal range lamp is the normal headlamp in most vehicles. This is meant for daily use in most situations. It also has an asymmetric low beam depending on which side of the road the vehicle is meant to drive on.
A long range lamp, also called a driving lamp and mistakenly called a fog lamp, has a much longer range than a normal headlamp but also a narrower beam. So it's more useful for high speed driving. This is mounted about the same height as main headlamps.
More info here.
I hope this clears your confusion.

I've been using one since 2 weeks and I've not faced any problems.Originally posted by shahkartik24 View PostBut please,,,,can anyone explain what are the side effects of using a 55/60 W bulb instead of the regular 35W
Has anyone faced any problem because of higher wattage???
If you want to fit one by yourself, be aware that you must absolutely not touch the glass part of the bulb. Also there's a small difference between the standard 35 W HS1 bulb and H4 bulb. The spacing between the two small tangs at the bottom of the metal holder is wider in the HS1 than a H4. The H4 bulb will not be sit in the holder correctly. To get around this, you'll need to flatten or cut off the tangs with a pair of pliers on the H4 to fit it.
