my fz has done only 50 kms ,sometimes when engine is cold it is knocking (the gun shot sound from silencer) though it is not very loud.
is this normal on new bikes

yeah, its called misfiring or reverse firing.

i have heard a lot of complain with regards to this. for some reason i had this too. it has become less. but not quite there yet. i am experimenting different fuel. hi octane, normal etc. trying to find out the right fluids for the bike.

          this is a concern.

Never happened to me I think water must have gotten into the fuel tank!

i think misfiring is not the correct term or you r reffering to some other thing, it is called detonation
Knocking (also called knock, detonation or spark knock, pinking in UK English or pinging in US English) in spark-ignition internal combustion engines occurs when combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder starts off correctly in response to ignition by the spark plug, but one or more pockets of air/fuel mixture explode outside the envelope of the normal combustion front. The fuel-air charge is meant to be ignited by the spark plug only, and at a precise time in the piston's stroke cycle. The peak of the combustion process no longer occurs at the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The shock wave creates the characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and cylinder pressure increases dramatically. Effects of engine knocking range from inconsequential to completely destructive. It should not be confused with pre-ignition (or preignition), as they are two separate events.

                • ^^ explain that to my local mechanic..

on the other hand. can you record the sound. that way we will be able to send it to yamaha and they can analyze that sound in their labs by a means of a sound mapping system that compares the sound waves created by the audio file into a wave form that is directly analyzed with their system. maybe their Engineers will be able to give you a tech sheet that will tell you to either go to your mech and tell him its a reverse firing and they will tell you since the bike is new it does generate sounds such as you hear from your bike... and the BS with like read the manual .... warm the bike up before rolling it into gear... etc.

                    • nah the tic tic sound is quite common on Yam's i had the FazerDX even that made this sound.

and yes we are talking about the sound that comes from the silencer. it has got to do something with the combustion chamber and nothing wrong with the exhaust.

                      • K&N and Rim Stripes Installed

                        Hey guyz
Beig the first person on xbhp to get hands on FZ .........i had ridden the bike enough now.
                        So....got K&N RC1080 installed.
The bike feels nicer now...the exhaust note has become deep & Meatier and the mid range and top end torque has also increased....but not considerable.
The bike feels fast as per before.

Have also installed the Yamaha Rim Stripe Tape (red) on my baby.
It looks all the more attractive now.
                        Will post the pics ASAP.

                        Happy Riding
                        Cheers!!!!

                          • Polishing in Free Service

Can anyone explain what is meant by "The bike is to be polished" in free service.

The Orion guys just wash and 'wipe' the bike and give back.

                              • Crossed 500 km today... So, tried to go a little throttle happy. Here are my observations.
                                1. Bike crossed 50kmph @ 4000rpm - very smooth. Infact the sweet spot seems to be 50 to 60 kmph. absolutely no vibes/engine strain.
2.Crossed 60kmph at ~5000rpm. Engine sound turned a little rough, can feel the engine churning on the foot pegs. May be its harsh as its NOT run-in in this speed till now. No idea.
3.Crossed 70kmph at 5800rpm. Engine sound smoothened out(!?)... but there is obvious engine grinding felt in foot pegs.
4.At 78kmph at 6500rpm when I called it a day - enough for my baby for today! Its asking for more though, I can feel the pull... but I am not sure how much more it can do. Will try crossing that 80kmph after my 1st service.

Is it okay if I frequently visit 60 to 70 kmph now that I crossed 500km?
