Got my Toranado (read Duke 200) yesterday at 6PM. 9AM today odo reads 200+ Km A mix of city, highway and some twisties. I and Tornado went for an induction ride today, just to get to know each other. Here are some of my first impressions.

Acceleration: Exciting. Nothing ground breaking yet as I have not hit the real power band of this little monster if I may use that word.

Roll on acceleration: In the 6th cog Tornado can pull effortlessly from 35Kmph and does so pretty quickly. No lag at all. That too in slightly upward slopes.

Console: Handy for sure. I am yet to discover all the functions, but things like gear indicator, stand indicator, running mileage and so on can certainly help.

Handling: This word has been used a zillion times already - flickable. I would like to say it's outstanding. Perfect for city riding when combined with that upright sitting posture.

Seats: Hard :P Well this could be of concern if you want to munch some serious miles, otherwise you can ignore this. That said, this won't stop anyone from riding long distances. I myself did 75Km non stop including 25Km of city dash. Absolutely fine for me.

Brakes: Phenomenal. They just bite, both front and rear. You need to practise using only front or just tapping the rear brake lever instead of standing on the lever to avoid skidding the rear away. As a matter of fact, front is so good that, it can pretty much manage to build all the braking force if the need be. But I will stick to 80:20.

      Now Tornado's likes and dislikes.

      Loops honey, loops

Yes, loops of tarmac. This bike loves twisties. Of course I didn't try to push the limits today (Let the those Revz tires break-in first!), but I could easily manage 60ish speeds almost throughout the Nandi hill climb. And mind you, I'm no master of twisties. It's Tornado who eats tarmac loops for breakfast.

      Bad roads, real bad roads:

Nope! Tornado doesn't seem to like these. This is one area where I am a little disappointed with Tornado. He handles well on bad roads too, but suspension is a little too stiff is what I felt. Bumpy roads will break the riders back quickly. I like my RTR better in this department

So finally what is Duke 200?

      A city/street bike?

Absolutely yes. That is how it is portrayed by KTM, and the bike stands true to the claims.

      A tourer?

Yes and no. Hard seat and small brake/gear lever can have some negative effects. The levers need to be reached by twisting the ankle a little inwards, which causes minor discomfort in a long run. This might just be a matter of time before you get used to the bike. But the roll on acceleration and upright position should make Tornado a good tool for cruising at 100ish speeds.

All these points are biased first impressions only and can change in the future as miles start ticking. Don't take this review as a reference for your buying decisions :P
I will add some points from my side. (800 KM done)

The bike is quick, very quick.

Rear tyre has less grip while bracking.

She is only street bike. Not a tourer.

Should not ride pillion on long drive, too much jerk at rear seat on bad road.

My earlier P220 shock absorbers were good for Indian road.

0 to 100 unbeatable, but she should be driven above 100 KMPH, after that lot of vibration will enter from bike to your body.

Mileage is good, driven normal will get 45 to 50 KMPL, driven little hard 40 KMPL in city.

I am finding false nutral between 2nd and 3rd gear.

I am 5'7", sitting position not liking, kind of odd.

Console has lot of information. but sometime reflects a lot.

No problem bro. I don't think the RE in chrompet stocks cramster gears, but do update us regarding that.

          hehe guessed it right ...
Went through the online collection ... I MUST SAY they are pretty good looking, yet HIGHLY affordable set of gloves!!!

I just have one doubt... It's mentioned these are for dry weather and not for cold and rainy ones... So how would you suggest goin for it???

And also loved the jackets n saddle bags pretty cheap and good looking... Just hoping if I could trial wear them @ their showroom

            1. Rear tyre IMHO is really having good grip... Must get accustomed to the bikes braking... It's just too sharp at the front and rear
            2. I personally doubt that... People have given good feedback about duke as a tourer... However, I d try once myself and decide after a long ride
            3. Agreed, if we compare it with a city commuter (like spledor!!!) or a cruiser...But I felt it to be way better than other bikes in its class in case of pillion comfort...
            4. Haven't tried more than 80kph leme get mine to rest it out

            5. FALSE NEUTRAL BETWEEN 2nd and 3rd???
COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW... Just too curious :/

            6. Agreed... I would have loved a console design such as karizma zmr but with the same details it shows now

No it wasnt that bad. The radiator fan starts only when bike heats to its near max limit. If, for some reason radiator fan doesnt run properly that time, the bike will feel total loss of power with a strange revving noise. As long as the bike doesnt get too heated up, the radiator fan is not needed at all and the clogging wont affect anything.

btw do all liquid cooled bike engines have a fan ?

Yes Sir, all the liquid cooled bikes do have a fan which helps in keeping the radiator under controlled temperature.
The real beauty lies in throttle's twist!!

The fan starts only after the bike reaches a certain temperature limit?? I doubt, mostly the fan is on till the engine is on. This helps in keeping the radiator in controlled temperature, which in turn will help to keep the engine under controlled operating temperature.

Also, incase the fan stops running and the bike is running, there are chances of getting the bike engine getting seized.

My knowledge as far as i know about this. Correct me if i am wrong.

Your knowledge is wrong on the above subject. The radiator fan only starts when the engine temperature reaches a certain level.

A radiator itself is reason enough for you to take care while washing the bike. A radiator has fins that run vertically in a looped fashion. Most washing centers try to direct water at quite a considerable force on these fins (especially after monsoon washes when there is muck on the radiator). The fins are extremely flexible (mostly aluminum) and are prone to bending due to this water jet. Bent fins block air passage and the radiator loses efficiency.

Best way to clean a radiator is with a gentle trickle of water and a toothbrush.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

I think Lappu has also got the delivery of his KAtoom today.

Is it available in India? Does it disrupt the air flow?

No idea, but it's being an international product I am pretty sure something will be available pretty soon. Somebody on another forum got one made for his CBR 250R. You need to search WWW a bit for this. These are designed in a manner to allow required flow of air to the radiator.

                              Hi Friends,

I just my duke delivered to me 2 days ago, rode about 120 KM till now..

and only one thing to say..

                              I have been Duke'd...

it simply makes me cry with joy

and as for the Run-n or break-in is considered, I guess I am the only one following the Harsh Break-In (Motoman BreakIn method) no easy run in for me..

                              Day 1

Showroom to my office 10 KM...

Sudden Accelearations, and sudden Breaking all the way..
upto 8000 RPM 105 KmpH in 6th Gear (for about a strech of 1.5 KM) I loved it..
                              Ride and Let Ride.. :-)

Some on the FB N650 forum also had one made for his N650. The radiator has a pseudo radiator guard with horizontal fins/slots facing upwards. This should suffice; not sure whether we can add another layer to this existing guard.

Update: The Duke is one of the hardest machines to wash yourself. Some points that I learned yesterday when I washed her myself

                                1. Right side is easy to clean; even through the frame.
                                2. Left side is slightly difficult to clean since most of the exhaust plumbing resides there.
                                3. Left side of the swingarm and alloy is a nightmare to clean in the absence of a good cleaning fluid and a paddock stand; our oil-can happy mechanics spray such a lot of lube that the chain sprinkles it everywhere and the swingarm + alloy turns greasy.
                                4. Swingarm is so beautiful to look at but absolutely tricky to clean.
                                5. Rear grab-rail can hurt your fingers while buffing away the polish
                                6. Clips on hoses can cut your fingers while cleaning the left side of the bike.
                                7. Front alloy is easy to clean provided the bike is on a paddock stand.
                                8. Paddock stand needs to be mounted a bit away from the rear sprocket as the swingarm mount of the stand interferes with the sprocket and makes it difficult to turn the wheel while cleaning.
                                9. Mounting the paddock stand away leaves one of the sides slightly off the paddock mount as the swing arm converges towards the chassis mount. Best way is to ensure that you clamp the mounts just before popping the bike up.
                                10. Seat can grab a whole lot of fibers from a yellow cleaning cloth; best policy is to use a microfiber cloth.
                                11. Radiator is easy to clean using a toothbrush and upward strokes with a trickle of water or a spray bottle.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.
