• Re: KTM 390 - The original Hooligan - Ownership Thread

Hello friends,
I'm at number 9 in Kolkata and I think I will receive the bike within next week.

I have 2 things to ask,
1. Has anyone tried to do the registration and insurance from outside? I mean how about just buying the bike with ex-showroom price + temp number plate and doing rest of the things on your own? Does that save money?

2. I already have 3 helmets. How to bypass that helmet?

You can skip the helmet by showing a purchase bill of the previous one. Thats what the KTM CP Delhi guys told me.

Now that we have enough Duke 390 owners around here, can you folks advise us on the things to keep on mind while taking delivery of the 390? Inputs from Duke 200 owners is also very welcome. Thanks.

Are you guys implying that you have to buy KTM helmet with the bike? If that is so, then this is news to me as there was nothing mentioned about accessories that have to be bought with the bike. I had even asked KTM CP about buying a KTM helmet and was told that since the helmet's cost runs into 10K (aroung 12-14k) they don't stock it. My personal belief is that the showrooms must be pulling one over you. Please clarify if I have understood it wrong.

You don't have to buy a "KTM" helmet (After booking the bike I don't think I can even buy myself new undergarments). Its a Rs. 640/- helmet that they have been instructed by the "authorities" to sell along with the bike. That also can be avoided if you can present a bill of purchase of any other helmet.

I got an on paper price quote from these guys, the cost breakup includes the price of the helmet.

Yep, it was hard to wait for it
And I have posted by initial observations already, you can get it in few pages back.

BTW, an interesting thing happened today which almost sent me into shock .

Me along with my friend were going to have a look at riding jackets, there is a neat open road at HITEC city area where one can do sweeping corner at speed above 110 kmph. Well this road is too irresistible to do that, so my mental restriction to not cross 5500rpm was set-aside and I twisted the throttle in 4th gear and went into corner, in mid of the corner I was already at 108 kmph and bike was rock steady and stable.

Once I was out of the corner, I had to brake because there is a traffic signal at some distance. To my surprise, I found the rear brake lever is not moving while I press it with my right leg. Once I crossed the signal, stopped aside and looked at the rear brake. They were jammed and rear wheel was hardly free to rotate. I could see that the calipers are fully engaged, pressed the rear brake lever only to find out there was no movement. Later my friend ravi@17bhp came back. We made call to psr and with his suggestion of gently hitting the rear brake assembly (on calipers area) loosened a bit and wheel was free and bike was ridable.

Once we completed our task and met few other xbhpians I left to service center to it checked which is still 16-18 kms away. I was using the front brakes only. But after some time I felt the bike was not moving freely and even in first gear it was struggling. I stopped again to notice that rear brakes were jammed again and rear wheel was almost locked. I waited for some time and again gently hit the brake assembly and it got loosened again. I made call to showroom and informed them, they said to get the bike to showroom if it is ridable or else take to to the near by KTM, Banjara Hills (I bought the Bike from KTM, Begumpet) which is just 1 kms away from where I was.

I took the bike to the to KTM, Banjara. Their mechanic quickly has a look and he simply loosened the brake lever which was getting struck and leading to the jamming of the brakes. Once the brake lever was free Me along with another friend (who came for his N650 water wash) took a test ride and found that the brake was now working perfectly.

Came to know that the simplest problem also our brains seems to exaggerate it :P and mechanic proved that If your basics are perfect we wont have problem anytime.

Do you mean that the brake lever was stuck ? on a new bike ?....and it is now adjusted and rear braking is ok ?
Your post is a little confusing since you have said " The brake was not working Perfectly " after the Mech had attended to it....

Sorry, that was a typo. I meant NOW instead of NOT.

Brake lever was probably struck because of the wash i have done earlier in the morning and there was quite a lot fine sand near the rear suspension which might have creeped into brake lever joint.

I rode for 15kms after that. No problem now.
