    Hi folks!
I took delivery of a December 2016 390 Duke yesterday evening and am thrilled to be part of this ownership thread. I've waited almost a year to get my hands on this upgrade. Here's a picture from yesterday :

To answer how I got a 2016 390 being a BS3 bike, the showroom owner had transferred the remaining bikes in his own name on 31st March and offered it to me for 1.6 lakhs OTR.
It wasn't a used bike as I inspected the bikes at the godown and selected mine from there.

    I have 3 queries though :-
    1) There's a thud sound from the gearbox almost everytime I shift (not just the 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st). Am I doing something wrong? I noticed that the gearbox is really smooth on this and I'll have to use less force unlike my Gixxer that has a really hard gearbox. When I used less pressure, the shift would be executed perfectly with a very light 'click' sound, while at other times, the gear wouldn't budge and I'd have to apply a little more pressure, which results in the 'thud' sound. Almost every time the 'thud' sound is produced, there's a knock felt on the clutch lever. I'm a little concerned. Showroom people say it's normal, but who knows? Has anyone experienced these on your 390s?

    2) The bike runs really hot. Temp bars shoot up in the city in no time. I know the engine hasn't been run-in yet and stuff, but still, I shut off the engine for an hour and after that, the temp bar was still at 50%! In 10 minutes of city riding (not B2B traffic), the temp bars went full! And I barely rev the bike, and not just because the engine is in the run-in phase.

    3) Can someone please tell me the appropriate RPMs to shift gears and the speeds at those RPMs in each gear? Apparently my bike doesn't like to upshift at anything below 5k RPM. (DOHC high-revving motor, I know, just need to confirm).

Apart from these things, the bike seems perfectly fine. Vibes go down on the highway and cruising is pure bliss! I'm sorry if I'm asking any details present in the owner's manual because I shall get mine tomorrow.

    Cheers,
    Joel.

Gears are indeed a bit notchy, especially when you engage the 1st gear. Yes, it does produce a "thud" sound in 1st gear. But I never felt any knock on clutch lever.

Regarding, engine temperature, which city do you live in? Ambient temperature has a role to play. Besides, let the bike run in to judge if it heats up too fast. If you are riding those 10 mins between 5-7k rpm then all the bars should NOT be coming on.

In city I normally upshift between 5-6k. 3-5k is kind of rideable but doesn't feel good.

I feel the knock almost every time! I suppose I'm either shifting at the wrong RPM (maybe that's why the 'thud' sound) or the clutch play needs adjustment (which would be rather weird considering it'd be factory set and shouldn't have any such problems on it).

Now now, I might've been riding for 20 minutes but was a little too excited to notice. However, my guess is I was short shifting the bike, I'm used to the shifting patterns on 150cc bikes where apart from the 1st to 2nd, one can upshift within intervals of 10kmph because the gearing and RPMs allow it. I'll have to experiment with the city riding part.

I'll try out the 5-6k RPM upshifts and see if things work well that way. Curse the console for being so damn small though, it's difficult to note RPM readings on that thing! But then, you get what you pay for, and I got more than just that! [emoji14]

First, A big congrats for your new ride. The fact that you have been able to reap the maximum benefits from BS3-BS4 transition makes me a little jealous [emoji12]

          Now for your queries:

          1. The gear clunk sound was persistent in my case too till almost 1300KMS. The bike needs to be consciously revved high for each upshift, and for downshifts a little blip of the trottle should lower the clunk or thud. And 150cc gear shift habit also has a lead role for this problem.

          2. For the heating issue, it is a little strange in your case. You may want to refer this link:

          3. The happy rpm to upshift is around 5k. This is what I have experienced so far. Mine has run 11000KMS almost now, and the gear clunking/thud problem is completely eliminated now.

          Cheers [emoji106] ,
          Nawaz

Thanks a lot, brother! Given that the 200 Duke retails at 1.61L OTR here, I feel like a boss, having got a 390 1k cheaper. [emoji14]

              1. I realised the sound comes only during upshifts. I've been shifting between 5-6k RPM and occasionally between 6-7k RPM but the sound does come a lot of times. Have you ever felt a knock at the clutch lever when changing gears?

              2. I rode the bike yesterday night. The temperature generally stays between 6-7 bars on the highway and 7-8 bars in the city. Maybe it'll cool down a bit after the run-in?

              3. Let's hope my bike pans out the same way!

REAR BRAKE GETS APPLIED WITHOUT PRESSING

                        Hi,
My bike seems to be having this problem where the rear brake seems to get mildly actuated even when I'm not pressing it. The only way to release it is to pump the rear brake with my foot a few times.

Q1. Has anyone else experienced this? What's the probable cause?
                        Brake Fluid? Wirings? Old pads?

Q2. Also, how thin are the brake pads supposed to be when they're ready to be replaced?

I've had this problem on my RC390. Try increasing the rear brake free play a little, that worked for me. (You can find the instructions in your manual.)

Check the brake lever for proper free play, adjust if required.
Considering the bike is over 2 yrs old:
Get the caliper serviced, i.e. remove, clean, grease the pins and put it back together.
Replace with new brake fluid (drain out the existing one completely)
If these do not fix your issue, then you might also need to service the master cylinder (and maybe replace the parts inside such as the spring/piston). Bajaj usually sells a repair kit which includes parts to rebuild the master cylinder.

The minimum recommended pad thickness is 1mm.
