And as far as the engine is concerned, the 500 carb engine on the bullet is substantially powerful and not that very expensive to maintain.

The parts for bullet 500 are cheaper,
And you get a machine with a successful legacy which can be passed down from generations to generations.

P.s. the Thunderbird has become very very common.
But you mentioned in your earlier post that you decided to go with bullet 500 after test riding it whereas reasons which you have given in this post are different. I wanted to know how a single test ride changed your decision.

Because that single test drive made me consider bullet 500 as an option and that consideration led to a lot of research. (Videos of bullet 500, looking for parts online, reviews from RE service centre manager, technicians, and parts dealers) and finally led to change of mind and bike model.. So that's the story.. If you are confused or torn between the two, just do some research, ask a lot of questions, talk to such people who are dealing with royal Enfield bikes on daily basis.
      You will find your answer..
I doNt regret even a percent for changing the booking from TBTS 350 to BULLET 500.

Thanks a lot for answering but I would be really grateful if you can support your reply with examples or you can say price difference in their parts. I expecting a detailed reply on price difference in parts, ease of ownership and other factors on which you have researched. I am asking all this because RE is in my future plans.

          Hi Guys!
          Fuel Consumption Update 2.0
I filled my tank with Rs 200 worth of petrol when I had hit reserve on my bike. I turned the knob to 'Petrol ON' and was on my way. Its been 102 kilometers till it hit reserve again.

          Calculation:
          A) Petrol: Rs 200 = 2.75 ltrs
          B) Kilometers since last tank fill = 102 Kms
          Current est average = B/A
          = 102/2.75
          = 37 Kms/liter

P.s. Heavy Mumbai peak hour traffic plus a pillion.. And I was not slow and boring this time..

After booking the classic 350, the dealer offered me a test for the bullet 500. Totally loved the bike. However, after reading a few threads and after a few conversations with few bulleteers, many people told me that 350cc re's are more hassle free. 500cc's are known to be problematic. whereas the 350cc is more reliable. Can a bullet 500 owner please help me with this. How has the ownership experience been? Are there any major issues faced with this particular bike?

                  • Odometer error in Royal enfield bikes- Bullet 500 UCE

                    Hi All,

I own November 2014 Bullet 500 UCE. This is amazing bike when it comes to riding experience. However I am facing an instrumentation problem .

After a week of owning a new bike, I started feeling i am accumulating too many miles on odo meter. then one fine day I clearly measured distance between my home ( Padmanabha nagar ) to electronic city ( Via nice road) , my bike was showing the distance of 30KM where as wikimapia and google measured it as 26KM. whooping 15% difference.

I decided to test the distance with my car, ( Alto ) which showed me the distance of exact 26KM !

I compared my bike's odo reading with my brother's TVS bike , again my brother' odo reading matched with GPS, Google maps and wikimapia diatances and mine was showing 8% to 13% more distance.

When I took my bike for 1 st service , this problem was reported to HSR services BSK . They tested my bike with 2 other bikes for the distance of close to 3KM , all 3 bikes showed same Odo reading . I personally rode along with service center guy on another bike, again odo reading of both the bikes ( Both were Bullet 500 UCE) were same.

Since all the tested bikes were showing same odo reading , HSR services washed their hands saying , there is no problem with the odo meter and there can be problem with Google maps and GPS .

Any suggestion to rectify the Odo error would be of great help , also share your experience, if you have also faced same problem with your RE bikes.

                    Regards

Any one facing similar issue on UCE engine?
Can any one explain the source and reason..?
I got this sound couple of times but not while starting . I was cold starting using choke , engine started normally , within 10 or 15 seconds when I disengaged choke engine died making metal crushing sound which was loud. But within few seconds , I restarted engine and it was back to normal without even hint a of a sound. It happens only when engine is cold.

Well I am not a tech savvy but i had colleague who knew about RE bikes assured that nothing serious. This sound is related to something called Sprag clutch it seems. bike was taken to service center , they opened left side engine cover and tightened something and adjusted idling speed. Problem partially solved. so now I try to keep RPM little high while warming the cold engine.

This problem is mostly related to ( if we both are referring to same sound)

                      1) Very low idling RPM

                      2) Sprag clutch related issue

I think we need to confirm odometer accuracy before calculating FE figures . since my Bullet 500 was showing around 15% more mileage than actual if I had calculated my FE figures based on Bike's odo reading then I was getting close to 36 KM/L where as actual fuel efficiency was around 31KM/L

From your description of the sound I too feel the suspect here is sprag clutch but it is not something about which you shouldn't be worried. If sprag is gone then the self starter would stop working and also it is not a cheap part, I guess it cost somewhere around 5K. If your bike is under warranty then insist RE guys to replace it.
Sprag clutch has special type of "8" shaped bearings which rotates in one direction but not in other. It sits in the clutch casing.

I am experiencing only when my beast kick back. I reported this during my First and Second service. But the mechanic confirms this as a normal UCE issue.
Not sure about why this happens.
Now a days I am experiencing some starting trouble. I went to RE service station today and now they suspect some timing issues. Still they are looking into this issue .

I think sprag clutch is installed to prevent the machine from kick back (Correct me if I am wrong.). So during kick back if sprag clutch is making some sound, that doesnt mean that it is gone. Then how can we ask RE guys to replace it. I dont know why these guys are not doing anything during free service.

I never said it is gone. I said if it is gone. And sprag is not to prevent only kick back, it is to assist the starter also. And kick back is the primary most reason which eats up sprag. I think AVL Enfields had frequent sprag issues. And if sometimes the ES is not working in your bike even if battery and motor is good then it is clear sign of handicapped sprag.

Now I am totally confused. My ES is working perfectly, but during kick/self start (Rarely) engine produce some crashing sound. RE guys confirms its a UCE issue. Could you please share your experience? Now I am thinking opting RE as my ride was a wrong decision. (Very much worried about my beast.. )

Don't be worried. RE does comes with some set of issues we ask know that. It is not trouble free like Honda or Yamaha.
You can just Google about sprag and google about sprag and Royal Enfield. If sound is metallic sound as you told then it from sprag. ES is working as it is not damaged completely. See if it is in warranty then why don't you fight with them to get it changed? You have all rights for that.
