Can you provide these details:
1. Year bought and present odometer reading.
2. How do you calculate mileage - full tank or reserve to reserve?
3. Parts replaced till now like spark plugs, air filter, etc.
4. Grade of oil used.
5. Are the wheels rotating freely off the stand?
6. Details of the tune-up done by you and SVC.

This is the spark plug that has run 7000 kms (CR6HSA given by ABT against CPR6HSA/CPR7HSA). Looks okay ? AFR setting is stock.



The old chain has "stretched" by 1 and 1/2 links ! Odo is at 205xx now. In the picture is also seen the new 'Diamond Kit' Rolon chain (waiting to be fixed). Rolon's chain looks and feels really beefy compared to the skinny OEM DID !

Suzuki GS150R sudden mileage loss

Hi all,
I own a Suzuki GS150R, 2008 model, 33000+ kms done.

Few years back Suzuki mechanics told me that the clutch plates are ruined (after an accident), and so i got them changed. The bike was okay. After that, my mechanic advised me to use only 20w40 engine oil for the bike whenever i change it. (Previously used some castrol engine oil, which was the only one available in the place i lived while studying). Now back in bangalore, he filled it with Valvoline 20w40 oil. But i felt a major let down in power, NOTICEABLE down in power. And this time I tried Shell AX7, rode it for 150-200 kms, and now my bike is awesome again. Very smooth, low engine noise, smooth gear shift, good power, far better acceleration. But mileage has come down to around 25 kmpl from 35 kmpl in city. And when the fuel levels get low, the engine revs in 4000 rpm IN IDLING. (Does no happen when fuel level is higher). Also, last time i got the engine oil changed, only around 400-500 ml oil drained out for just 1200 kms. I wonder if the engine is burning the engine oil. Please help. I love this bike and i don't want to let it go.

Clutch plates got ruined after an accident?

The brand of engine oil doesn't make too much of a difference, as long as the grade is as recommended by the manufacturer.

If your engine is burning up that much oil. Your engine would probably require some work on it. Surprising though, considering it is a Suzuki with so few clicks on the odo.

yet not signs of recovery

Even my OEM did not last long. The alternate tooth of front sprocket broke around 17K kms and the chain itself was replaced around 20K.

I also have Rolon now (42T at rear) and it is healthy enough to go another 10K+ kms.

Alternate teeth missing would make a scary loud "khadak-khadak" especially when starting to accelerate. My OE chain has given away due to lack of lubing and adjusting. I adjusted it only when it started to hit the covers - chain had come off the sprocket 2 times in the past at very low speeds, both times when transitioning from 2 -> 3 gear. After alteration of gear ratios 1 & 2 in the latest batch of GS, the "gap" between the second and third was widened, I guess. Also, 2 to 3 is the only transition I can't make (till this day) smoothly during clutch-less upshifts. All others, including 1 > neutral > 2 is as smooth as butter getting cut by a hot knife during clutchless upshifts. Lesson learnt - I have kept the target as 30,000 kms for Rolon set with regular lubing and adjusting, lets see if I can make it.

Thank you, I have just prepared the ground for more experienced people to address this - be a little patient, it can be solved. I hope you have replaced the air filter too. The tappets have to be adjusted since you have clocked 53k plus on the odometer - was it done in SVC? If not yet, have it done using a feeler gauge on a icy cold engine. All others that you mentioned (oil, choke cable) are a pass, so don't worry about them. I hope there is no loss of power or burning of oil.

Let me share this:
I bought a second hand Eterno on August 15, 2009 (it was the best Independence Day for me - I learnt most of Chennai by roaming in that rickety-racketty scooter). The vehicle was bought for a mere 9k INR at that time and had 58k on the odometer. The previous users (it ran for a local courier company) obviously abused it. My reserve to reserve showed only 32-35 kms per litre of petrol. I took it to KUN Honda, Adyar (Chennai) and explained the history and problems to the SA.

He did 3 main things apart from the usual carb CO/idle adjustment using a gas analyzer:

1. Air filter and spark plug was replaced.
2. Valves were adjusted to spec.
3. "Clutch cleaning" was done (I don't know what that is, the bill said so).

Surprise - Eterno started returning 58-62 kmpl till the day I sold it for a GS in late October 2012. I drove it at 50 kmph (the maximum end of economy zone in most Hondas, only the recent Shine SP is an exception due to 5th gear - the economy zone is officially stretched to 60 kmph) all the time.

can we use this oil on the GS150R?. Its a 20W40 mineral oil, i think its manufactured by Idemitsu.... In chennai, only ABT Suzuki in nandanam has this oil for Rs. 270/-

Now am confused. You have a Gixxer, Fiero or GS? All three can use this oil though its preferable to use a 10W-40 on Gixxer. All the xW-40 are the same at engine's operating temperature. Since we don't live in Alaska or Russia, the first number for winter can be 5, 10, 15 or 20. If I had a Gixxer, I would simply buy a can of AX7/Mobil 4T/Elf Moto/Gulf and be content. It is not necessary to use SVC's oil unless one wants to stay with the company's warranty of 2 years/30,000 kms.

I am convinced on the Shell Advance AX5 20W40 for the fiero....but thinking about buying this one as an extra backup since its an Suzuki OE oil........my relative has a GS150R but he wouldn't tell me which oil its currently running on....becauz he doesn't know....

AX5 is a good oil, premium mineral, slightly on the upper side compared to their own AX3. Suzuki OE oil is not special - it comes from Motul or Idemitsu. Earlier, Castrol used to supply it, I don't know if this continues.

Waiting for the pictures. 4000 rpm idling seems be an issue with the choke cable or the idle was set on a cold engine, I don't think level of fuel will affect it. Is the carb overflow pipeline leaking fuel? For a normal GS, full application of choke will shoot the idling to approximately 3000 rpm.

There is no leakage from the overflow pipe nor is there smoke from the exhaust.
Idling set on cold engine probably, because the 4000 rpm idling happens mostly when the engine is heated, but if i decrease the iding when it is doing that, the engine switches off on almost all occasions of shifting down while braking. Sorry if I sound vague, but this is what is happening.
