The last 300 kms has come up in a month and a half's duration thanks to a changed location and 0.5 kms ride to office.

The GS is holding up well. Twice it has stopped abruptly so far due to loss of compression. I'm no longer running LED's since the rpms that i ride in everyday cannot sustain the battery. Michelins are okay, mileage hovers around 50 after the changed tyres.

Considering a daily 80 km highway ride for work, occasional long cruise(300-400km) and pillion comfort, is buying a pre-owned, 4 years old, Suzuki GS 150R, with only 7000 km on odo, still relevant in 2018? Pillion comfort is a must as my pillion is not comfortable on 250R even for a city ride. Are the spare parts easily available at service centers. May I hope to keep this bike fit and maintained for next five-six years. If you want to suggest its replacement (in cruising and pillion comfort) in current models available in market, independent of CCs, please go ahead!

Guys i want to know the tappet clearance for our GS for inlet & exhaust valve.. I called the svc & they hav given me the foll values:
            Inlet 0.04mm
            Outlet 0.10mm

He didn't sounded too sure hence need to be doubly sure... The svc also told me to replace the timing chain do u guys know symptoms before timing chain goes very loose...

The only problem i m facing right now is a faint tic tic noise coming from engine when its heated up my logic tells me that valve clearance needs to be done... Since the last time I adjusted it was around 15k & right now i m at 43k... Pls give ur inputs so i do the needful... Thx

Google "workshop manual GS150R" and download it.

              It says:

              IN: 0.04-0.07 mm
EX: 0.10-0.15 mm. These values for cold engine.

After a couple of hours, i got a call from the service center that the engine needs to be repaired due to some fused piston and that it would cost around 18K to fix the bike!

I feel that is too expensive and im not really sure if it would really cost so much to fix the bike. When i went to collect the bike, it did not look like they opened the engine up to check for the problem. The guy there(Hameed), told me a long list of parts that need to be replaced, like bore, piston and another 4 to 5 names i dont remember...I somehow have the feeling he was not really sure what exactly needed to be replaced or repaired and was just throwing some names up in the air. So wanted your expert opinions/suggestions as to what to do now?

Would it really cost as much to repair my bike? Are there any other service centers i can try in Hyderabad who can fix my bike at a reasonable cost? I somehow feel that the folks at the Ranigunj service center are trying to make me spend more that what is necessary.

Incase, if the price they quoted seems legit, would it make sense to spend 18K on this bike just to get it fixed or sell it off and buy a new bike?

                Please help.
I think this is a reasonable cost to bear for the damage incurred. Once this is done your engine will become almost like new so why do you want to spend a lot of money on a new bike if you can get back your bike in good condition. You can claim insurance and you don't have to pay much for this repair anyway.

                • Bike's top end speed abymsal

                  Hi guys,

I have a GS150R 2012 model and it has been performing well (current ODO reading at 53k). The cylinder wall had developed some scoring around 30000 KMS, so I had to change the piston and cylinder head. I followed the break in limits for the engine again for the next 1000kms. After that, it continued to perform well. After 2015, the bike was only used sparingly since I was out of town for two years. Now, when I started using it again, I realized that the top end performance has reduced. I used to comfortable cruise at 80kmph, now it has dropped to 60kmph. On flat road, it easily used to cross 100kmph, now it rarely crosses 90kmph. The bike revs fine and the chain slack, air pressure, sprockets and air filter are ok. There is a noticeable amount of tappet noise but otherwise the engine sounds fine (no misfiring, no overheating, no hiccups while running). Is there any other explanation for the drop in engine performance before I start all the valve adjustment/engine compression tests?

                  • Re: Suzuki GS150R - Front Disc problem

Recently my bike's front disc brake started creating problem. The pads are clutching the disc and its causes the wheel to lock. Took it multiple times to SVC, but seems nothing worked out. Finally went to a local mechanic in my area. First he changed 'O' rings inside the caliper assembly. Still the problem was there. Then he changed the Master cylinder. No luck. Finally he says we need to change the complete brake caliper assembly.

                    My questions are:
                    1. Will replacing the caliper assembly along with disc pads (not the disc) solve the issue?
                    2. In case if we don't get the spares from suzuki, can I go for other OEM?
                    3. Based on Qn 2, which bike's spare will fit for GS? Unicorn or CBZ?

Carb was cleaned and fuel hose replaced after the 2-year hiatus? Float height should be as mentioned in the manual. Other reasons shop manual says for poor performance at high speed include defective CDI/Ignition coil - if defective - replace. Yes, you need to check tappet clearance again. I understand you have already replaced plug and air filter.

SVC virtually did nothing while your local mech is following trial and error.

                      1. Most probably yes because that's the only thing not replaced except the hose.
                      2. Bybre caliper -> Caliper dust/oil seals, caliper pistons (26 mm) and master cylinder/master cylinder cup piston are swap-able with Unicorn 150/CBZ Xteme 2012 model. Caliper cannot be interchanged due to LHS orientation.

                      Applies only for Bybre caliper.

                      3. I suggest getting the caliper from Suzuki.

A blocked relief hole in master cylinder can cause your problem but you have changed the complete unit, so thats ruled out. Also change the caliper pistons if you are planning to change the caliper.

                      • Re: Suzuki GS150R

I had my GS150(25k on odo in 2015) Piston and Cylinder changed at the same Ranigunj service center after an engine seizure due to lack of engine oil, back in 2015 it costed me around 16K, but the bike was under the 3 years warranty( bought it in 2013), so paid only the labor charges and some other component charges which costed me around 4k.

I am not an aggressive driver and mostly maintain a speed of 40-60 Kmph. And only city riding.

Now in 2018 the odo is at 37k and being servicing it regularly at a local mechanic. And now the performance is low, Tapet sounds, low pickup. And the mechanic say the engine need to be re-bored. I don't have an intention to get the Cylinder/Piston replaced again, and the local mechanic quoted a price of 8k for a re-bore. Would this really cost 8k?

Any good local mechanic you guys can suggest in Hyderabad to get the re-bore?I love the bike and don't have an intention to sell it.

Suzuki Ranigunj did not provide me a hard copy or a list of parts that need to be replaced/repaired. The guy there Hameed just mouthed a few parts and said they needed to be replaced. He sounded unsure himself but was sure about the price of 18K. That is why i find it suspicious.

My bike is still running but its just that its become very rough and viby. There is a weird airy whistling kind of sound emanating from the bike.

Incase if Malakpet cannot help then i will have to sell this bike and look for a new one. I know its gotten quite old but i really love this bike and it worked perfectly fine until this problem. Having trouble letting go...esp. since i tried testing a few bikes last weekend, like the Gixxer SP, Intruder, Hornet, Duke 200 & 390 and the Dominar. Nothing impressed me as much as GS150R did at the time when i bought it back in 2010. There was a clear delineation between it and its competition. Only Unicorn came close then.... and i almost bought that until i tried the GS150R and instantly i knew, this was it. The digital console, 6 gears and the LED tail lights gave it the edge.

I guess im looking for that kind of an impact amongst the new bikes. Duke 390 did impress me with its acceleration and the ever present power but i feel its not practical for city use and i also feel im gonna get myself killed if i buy that..... Looking forward to test riding the Apache RR310 but test rides are not available yet in Hyderabad!!

Will keep you posted. Thanks again.

                          Hello,

I noticed your earlier posts and felt compelled to reply. GS150r is that type of bike that will feel like a million bucks compared to A LOT of bikes out there, whose looks/quality/power may be good to others, but not really to us. GS riders around the world have been able to understand this peculiar bike and have learned to love it. And all this after having learned the hard way that GS has a few flaws (I slipped and fell 2 times!) but these flaws, luckily, can be fixed.

All this has been discussed thoroughly before, but I will mention a few things about GS150r that you may find quite familiar. I will write some sort of "versus" list with a related comment, then I will just close the post.

                          * REFINEMENT VS. POOR PICKUP AND HANDLING IN TRAFFIC. Refinement is first class here, and IMO the sound is much better than the one on some other bikes, including CBR 250R, Fazer 250, etc. But then some people plainly HATE how little engine noise and vibes are present on GS. Pickup, on the other hand, improves as the engine "unlocks" after 10,000 Kms or so, but handling is something to consider if you are not into weight lifting. The word haati has been used to describe GS. Just imagine.

                          * BAD LIGHTS. No versus item. IMO, the real culprit here is the reflector (NOTHING conventional is truly good on Gs, even 55w halogens). The OEM ligthbulb is SIMPLY bad. LEDs, HID or more powerful conventional bulbs should be tried on this bike. Please change the original part ASAP.

                          * ROAD STABILITY, SEAT HEIGHT VS TOP SPEED. Get rid of those MRF tyres if you still have them! (just do not go TOO BIG and/or dual purpose, GS does not like much bigger tyres), but do change them, particularly for the rainy season. I did it after 30,000 Kms, and I am just GLAD I did. I wish I had done it before, seriously! Also, the bike is tall for a lot of riders. And at 5'6", I am only able to place around 50% of my feet area on the road at stop lights. Why is TOP SPEED mentioned here? Because when you change your tyres for grippier ones, you will lose at least a bit of top speed. I went from 130 kph to about 120 when changing from 100/90 to 3.50 rubber tyres. But then again, indicated speed was "corrected" because of the slightly taller rear tyre. But the improved stability was absolutely worth it. More on this below.

                          * LOOKS. No versus item here. The bike looks good for most people, and modern enough in an era of race replicas, street fighters, cafe racers and what not. I still love the looks of my GS. And a few people have asked me about how much it was, as they believed it was at least 2 times the price it really was 3 years ago. GS is a gentleman's commuter bike with a touch of sport and adventure, plus a nice finish for the price, you know? Just another side note here, just by changing to slightly wider tyres, the motorcycle's looks improves quite a bit. But I know this is mostly psychological/subjective. Take a look at pics and tell me what you think.

                          * 6th GEAR. Nothing much to say here. 6 is better than 5, and GS cruising at 95 kph is like a Volvo. Total chill pill.

                          * NEW TECHNOLOGY VS. OLD. Old isn't always bad. Just look at our carburetted bike and how fuel efficient it is. The "problem" with GS's that are ridden harder, is that at some point (as mentioned earlier) their engine begins to spin more freely, therefore demanding more fuel from the fuel system. More sedate riders should NEVER even experience any change in their bike's behavior, but that's another story. If you ask me, I would not use fuel injection on this motorcycle, as it is more expensive technology and the improvements would not justify the extra money. Carbs can be tweaked whenever is needed for little cash.

But I would probably use a rear disc instead of the fitted drum to improve the overall braking package on GS. Just as a side note though, when I changed to Pirelly City Demon, the feel improved a lot AND the bike stopped locking under heavier braking, even under the rain. Something interesting about the upgrade was that the front MRF tyre works just fine with the Pirelli. No problems whatsoever if it isn't changed immediately. Anyway, drum brakes are not that bad. I wonder if I really need ABS. Seriously. BTW, if you are a moderate rider, drum brakes are just fine and GS's these rear pads are good for 40,000 Kms or more.

Just to finish the post, I believe some GSpians here on XBHP have been experiencing mechanical problems after a few years, but this little gem of an engine was built to last, as long as fresh oil is being put in it every so often, and proper levels are supervised at all times. But then again, overall maintenance applies to every single part of the motorcycle, and to every vehicle out there. Right now I am dealing with a decel popping that is driving me nuts, but I am planning on rejetting again, as my 30,000 Km mark also came with an increase in power from this truly underrated 149cc engine. Other than that, the bike is running like a champ, and every day is a new experience to me. I am planning to squeeze at least 70,000 Kms out of this thing before (probably) just getting an engine overhaul. But I am thinking it will be more like 80k or more Kms.

One last piece of advice here; before trying other motorcycles, try dealing with your Suzuki's shortcomings. They aren't many and the feeling of accomplishment after getting your GS to "perfect" tune is awesome. GS can beat bigger, more expensive motorcycles in terms of value for the money, and I would add, functionality.

                          Talk to you later...

Sorry to say that I am very late entrant here. Though I was reading all the post in this thread regularly but never tried to write some thing here. I bought GS150r in December 2009 and till the date riding on it. Just touched 60K on odometer. Nothing to say more about the bike. For me it proved a reliable workhorse, though I drive slightly fast than economy speed , till the date never got less that 50Kmpl. No major maintenance till the date except on am accidental damage done by friend. Chain Sprockets were changed at 50K, Tyre are company fitted. Periodical maintenance mostly done by myself, No major issue faced except a very strange problem of unlikely wear and tear of Clutch Boss (cost Rs. 190) only. If interested I will provide more details about the bike.
                            Thanks

Not every month necessarily but whenever I fill some noise or lack of smoothness . Even when I changed the Chain sprocket Kit only big sprocket was out of shape, I kept all the things with me for use in any emergency condition.
                                2. During this entire Period my rear brake pads were also changed only once near 50K Kms.
                                3. Front Brake Disk has been changed once, because of accidental damage.
