  • Re: Yamaha YZF R3 Owners Reviews and Experiences

Background ,I bought R15 back in 2010, on the way wanted to get Ninja 250 but it was beyond my budget, with R3 launched but got a car , always wanted inline 4 but next best inline 2, now money ready but no R3 as soon as relaunched booked and delivered on 18.
I had considered RC390 but my heart was set on twin, Kawasaki from all reviews would have been expensive 400.
I had not test ridden or even sat on the bike before so my first ride was on my bike, immediate feeling of wieght, R15 seemed very light, its slightly heavier but felt lot more, by looks it suits me more at 5 '11" nice compared with R15ver1. Sitting position not too happy, I love the R15 sporty stance, things I notice is getting used to the brake and gear levers not seamless change from R15, pickup great eagerness to be revved it's delight, exhaust note again great from twin, 100kms average increasing now to 20, in traffic Pune afternoon heat temp at 3 bars throughout, noticeable heat in the feet, silent fan operation. Cumbersome to move when off due to no rear handles to manhandle the bike in tight parking spots, people don't notice so it's a good thing in a way, sore saree guard immediately removed, looking forward to hopefully trouble free ownership.Parting shot if the R15 V3 had this 320 engine it would have been superb with new killer looks.

How much difference is there in the riding stance in R15 and R3?

Too comfortable more straight, I like more forward more front end, think it might be lower seat compared with clipons, maybe moving back will improve the triangle, this is only negative of bike for me.

Lowering the clipons and installing rear sets might help you if you like aggressive seating position.
It's the journey that matters, not the destination.

You can just try inverting the triple clamp. It lowers the handle quite a bit..

                Hi Guys,

Its been a long time since I posted on this forum. I have been following this thread until Yamaha had stopped the sale of R3 in India.
Now that they are back with a Bang I would be following this thread once again. I am planning to get mine in a couple of months and I am really excited!!!! It seems as if the days are crawling for me. BTW new owners of this beauty, please do post lots of pics and also your experiences. I am a bit confused about the colors though. I don't think I would like the Matt black color (Hard to maintain and the lack of shine). I loved the earlier glossy black. I hope they introduce it again including the red-white and Gray. I would highly appreciate if guys who got their rides could enlighten us "prospective buyers" regarding the colors and initial impressions. One thing that boggles me is why the hell does R15 get a slipper clutch and LED lights while the more premium R3 doesn't. It also misses out on ride by wire. I hope Ninja doesn't come up with their 400 anytime soon.

Not only the slipper clutch. The major difference is the frame. R15 frame is similar to that of R1 whereas R3 is not.

Agree with your opinion on the new colours, Glossy black option which now has been discontinued, looked amazing on the R3, while also adding a stealth appeal to the bike (A boon when you have to park your bike in public places) as I feel other colour combinations on offer attract too much unwarranted attention.

Now coming to your other point, the new R-15 V3 gets a slipper clutch, as it is advertised as an entry level track machine (While hardly anyone in India goes for track days). It is an odd decision from Yamaha to include slipper clutch but miss out on the safety net of ABS on the new R15 V3. I'd happily choose ABS over slipper clutch (especially on a 150cc bike) any day as I don't slam down on my gearbox like a maniac.

You're not missing out on much with the LED headlights (Ask any FZ25 or Duke 390 owner), Since R3's halogen light setup already has much better light throw/spread compared to any R-15 models out there. If you still want more light, you can upgrade your lamp to 55-60 Watt for High-beam.

Ride-by-wire would have been nice on a 4 lakh INR bike; but by no means a necessity. You'll be better off with this Yamaha over a Kawasaki especially in maintenance cost. One main USP of R3 is that it is quite cheap to maintain for a imported parallel twin bike.

Yes, R3 has a diamond type frame with a relatively relaxed riders triangle, translating into much better comfort if you plan on using the bike in urban environment or for touring. R-15 is definitely a superior handling bike compared to R3 owing to its perimeter frame (deltabox, or whatever they want to call it)

The R3 misses out on Aluminium swing-arm too; Although its called the 'R'-3, it is not as track focused like its other 'R' series siblings.

IMO, ride by wire is more of a marketing gimmick unless it comes along with various riding modes and control systems.

I agree ABS gets more priority than a slipper clutch on our roads and it kind of stupid of Yamaha to offer slipper clutch on R15 rather than ABS.

Yes true or else you could get it retrofitted with LED or projector lights (easily available on Ali express )

and I wonder why ??? Usually the lesser the cost the cheaper the quality would be...But I don't think Yamaha messes around with the quality of their products..
