Congrats on the bike! One question: Does the heat get redirected on your legs? I mean, can you "feel" the heat when you're stopped at signals, etc. in scorching sun?Originally posted by pratik261 View PostTips needed:
Since I'm new to liquid cooled bikes, can you guys share some info on below points?
1. Do I switch off the engine at signals? Especially if the radiator fan is running?
2. While parking, if the fan is running and the temperature bar is at 4, should I wait for the fan to stop? Again, should I keep the engine running?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Yamaha YZF R3 Owners Reviews and Experiences
You can also look at radiator guards from Motofusion (link) and Carbon Racing (contact them on Facebook). Both are priced at Rs. 3k (incl. GST). Haven't personally seen either of those, hence cannot comment on the quality. But both are made of aluminium, so should be better than the Aliexpress one's.Originally posted by jaivrk View PostThere are stainless steel Radiator guards on Aliexpress from as low as $14. Thanks! I could feel some heat on my calves and toes. Also the place where you grip the tank got a little warm. But nothing uncomfortable. Mind you, this was during peak daytime.Originally posted by razzer View PostCongrats on the bike! One question: Does the heat get redirected on your legs? To be frank, I am not worried about it. I expected it since it's a new engine and still in the break-in process. I think other, more long-term owners, can answer this correctly.

My R3 2018 temperature bars after few minutes reaches 3bars and stays there fan on all the time, on signals do feel the heat here in afternoon Pune , it never went beyond 3 traffic stop start fan quite audible, getting ready for first service averaging around 25 highway city combined rides.

Quality should be considered for sure. But a radiator guard is only a shield against stones. Why should it be costing anything more than a 1000 bucks?Originally posted by coldfire2005 View Postaliexpress has lot of cheap options , you can buy them but do not simply go for the cheapest ones see the quality and feedbacks

Radiator guard is to prevent bent fins due to debris, Cheap or expensive is not the real issue here , its a personal choiceOriginally posted by jaivrk View PostQuality should be considered for sure. Even if you have 99% percent of fins bent nothing will happen to your radiator fan or cooling.Originally posted by coldfire2005 View PostRadiator guard is to prevent bent fins due to debris, Cheap or expensive is not the real issue here , its a personal choice
Same suggestions which B7ACTHORN suggested you.Originally posted by pratik261 View PostGot my blue R3 delivered yesterday. Man she's amazing!

If you are at signal and fan kicks in keep the bike ideal until fan switches off, else battery may drain as bike is not ideal and battery is not getting charged at same time. This will only hamper if it is practiced continuously.

Re: Yamaha YZF R3 Owners Reviews and Experiences
Not really, Saquib. Fins in the radiator are meant to increase the surface area of a cooling medium, be it small or big. When a fin or two is blocked or bent it isn't gonna cause a significant reduction in the cooling efficiency of the radiator. Remember, radiator is mainly a heat exchanger, which cools itself by air passing IN BETWEEN THE FINS, where it transfers the heat to the air. When the fins are bent, air flow is restricted and when the air flow is restricted, cooling efficiency drops down dramatically. This effect compounds, when the fins are bent 50% to 100%. In such cases, you observe the fan running incessantly, you have your coolant gauge throwing up high coolant temperature, over time this leads to the failure of head gaskets and thermostat and poor engine performance.Originally posted by saquib3005 View PostEven if you have 99% percent of fins bent nothing will happen to your radiator fan or cooling.
.
It's always a good idea to keep the radiator fin condition in check. A couple of fins bent here and there, isn't gonna compromise the efficiency of the system.
Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!'
And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

99 % Bent Fins means Restricted Air supply and if not maintained properly then you will have a busted Radiator which just gave up on you in the middle of the road . and not to forget we live in India where loose stones are commonly found on roads , any stone coming under your front tyre at high speed might crash into your Radiator literally knocking it off for good .Originally posted by saquib3005 View PostEven if you have 99% percent of fins bent nothing will happen to your radiator fan or cooling.

Re: Yamaha YZF R3 Owners Reviews and Experiences
Vijay, there is a difference between bent fins and damaged fins. Bent fins doesn't create any damage to radiator to what extent its bent until its damaged. And radiator gaurds are also made to protect from damages and not from bending.Originally posted by B7ACKTHORN View PostNot really, Saquib. Fins are used for larger surface area, it doesn't blocks the air.
Thanks for enlightening, but radiator guards are used to protect Radiator from damages and not from avoiding fins to get bent.Originally posted by coldfire2005 View Post99 % Bent Fins means Restricted Air supply and if not maintained properly then you will have a busted Radiator which just gave up on you in the middle of the road . and not to forget we live in India where loose stones are commonly found on roads , any stone coming under your front tyre at high speed might crash into your Radiator literally knocking it off for good .
I have ridden enough with bent fins and it doesn't damage the radiator. Fins are used for larger surface area, it doesn't blocks the air.Last edited by saquib3005; 05-08-2018, 07:15 PM.

I have ridden enough with bent fins and it doesn't damage the radiator. Fins are used for larger surface area, it doesn't blocks the air.
1. Bent fins slowly reduces the efficiency of the radiator. Imagine it to be your nose which got blocked during flu. You can still breathe but not as easily and fluently as in non-flu time.
2. Radiator guard keeps the fins from bending - this is like applying Amrutanjan/Vicks on your nose and throat during flu. You have applied it so you know how easy it becomes to breathe.
3. Fins increase the surface area so that the heat dissipation is faster. Air/Oil cooled engines have that kind of design on the engine itself. A liquid cooled engine uses radiator and water/coolant jacket to do the similar task albeit in a better engineered manner.
It all depends on individual if he/she wants to have that extra cushion of having a radiator guard which helps keep too many fins from bending and still help dissipate heat in a better manner.
Radiator Guard == Amrutanjan/Vicks.Regards,
Akash Yadav
