      Hello!

      I am a prospective buyer.
Have almost certainly zeroed in on the R3 as the bike I am buying.
I am currently waiting to see if the GST rates are dropped (28-18% would mean nearly 35,000 savings!!) and if there are any festival discounts on the bike.

The question I have for the riders here is, what are the niggles/issues present on the bike?
What was your major headache so far and if at all, what would you say i need to be really wary of.

This will be my primary vehicle where I will use it for like 15kms in the city daily (Bangalore, but no traffic due to work timing) and weekend /month end rides.

      Thanks

There could be possible Deepavali discounts which will run during the festival. Check with the showroom on those offers.

Personally, if you ask me, i have not faced any major issues from my 2y10m years of ownership.

Firstly, the thing that bothers me is the low beam headlight conking off. It could happen anytime. First one conked off at 24k kms, second one at 44k kms, i'm now running on my 3rd low beam. That's mainly because the low beam runs all the time acting as a DRL.

Secondly, there were 3 recalls that were done.
2016 -> Clutch pressure plate bearing replacement (I was not part of this as my bike was purchased late 2016).
2017 -> Ignition key switch unit's component replacement and Tank bracket replacement (I was part of the recall but the faulty parts never bothered me and i don't find any changes in the new parts whatsoever).
2018 -> Radiator hose replacement and Shifter torsion spring replacement (I was part of the recall. The faulty parts never bothered me but after the replacement, gear shifts became smoother for a while. No extraordinarily noticeable difference though).

Thirdly, a few owners faced paint chipping issues. But it was only limited to a few owners and i'm not really sure how it happened. Maybe due to coastal regions or something about moisture, i don't know.

Fourthly, majority of the owners are facing discoloration of Header pipes and CatCon but it is due to the heat and i've learnt to live with it. It does not affect any part of riding pleasure. Also, rusting was another issue and no action was taken from Yamaha India's side on this. But these are rectified in the newer models.

But hey, recalls are a part of every company and i'm sure Yamaha India and Yamaha global rightfully did their R&D to rectify the issue before any untoward incident happened.

Other than these, it's just regular maintenance that i have done all these years and the bike has been a bliss to ride.
Only oil changes (Engine, fork), filter changes (Air, oil), liquids replacement (Coolant, front and rear brake fluids), brake pads replacement (Front and rear), spark plugs replacement, Chain and sprockets replacement, Tyre changes, Cable change (Only clutch, accelerator one is still going strong) and other regular maintenance like Torque check of all the nuts, screws and bolts, a timely good foam wash, chain tightening, cleaning, lubing, greasing the bearings (Wheels, suspension, cone-set). That is all i have done.

I do use the bike primarily for commuting 5 days a week for over 120+ kms. I do use the bike for breakfast rides, night rides, long haul rides panning thousands of kms. Never have i ever felt that this bike was a mistake. It did feel a bit weird when the bike was new as i was not accustomed with the heat dissipation but then i got used to it in a month or so. Again, felt the same with the weight of the bike, but then i got used to it too, eventually.

If you do maintain the bike periodically, you don't have to be really wary of ANYTHING. No such issues/niggles will cramp your mind. All in all, i must say, this bike has been a nearly-perfect package to me. I'm very much satisfied with the ownership and how things are panning out. I suggest you go for it. I'm sure you won't repent it

Can't thank you enough for such a detailed write up!!

Yes, the major reason I have zoomed in on the R3 over the Duke (and to an extent the TNT and N300) is the reliability and its all round capacity.
most of the "glitches" you mentioned here are pretty par for the course and nothing that alarms me. This is most reassuring.

and let's be honest, the main reason I am considering the R3 is the twin cylinder and when that is as good as it gets, I dont think I should have second thoughts except about the price !

          Thank you once again

It's really a problem free bike. Loving it and a I have just completed 10k
The sound is amazing in the high RPM's. I was asked by an Activa owner at a signal if my exhaust was stock to which I replied yes and he said it sounds good
Go for it you won't regret it.

The automotive sector thinks there might a cut but the Gov is confused and not clear. In-fact some think the slowdown is not because of the high GST at 28%. Let's see what happens.

Mine is a Nov 2018 ABS. The low beam bulb failed at 15K once because it acts as the AHO/DRL. Starter motor failed and was replaced under warranty. No other issues. It's a highly reliable bike.

Yep, I am following the GST updates rather closely.
FWIW, I believe a GST cut won't suddenly spur buying in a way the current car discounts cannot. The Maruti chief today mentioned that he doesn't think the GST will have an impact.
But, in the end, the GST cut will be a political move and I do not mind being bikeless till September 20th, if it means I can probably save around 30,000!

Related to the bike, I see the bulb failing is an issue , but thats amenable given its dual purpose.
                Has anyone installed Projectors?

Yep, low beam bulb conking off is a problem with every bike. Can't help it.
Regarding projectors, there was one guys from Hyderabad who'd done a DIY on it (search for the keyword on this thread) and there's one guy from Bengaluru also, but he left the group.
I'll try to PM their leads to you

You should also probably wait for Corporate tax reduction benefit 30% to 22% to be passed on to customer aswell

Not worth it, the foreign brands have basically ruled out doing this.
I was waiting on taxes, which are external, discounts and rate cuts cant be speculated on, honestly.

Came across a simple yet neat video of fork overhauling (fluid and seal replace) for the R3. Should come in handy for people who are interested.

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

                                Hey guys,

I had booked the R3 from Laxmi International, Bangalore on September 30. The sales rep said the bike will be delivered by October 15.

I have a question regarding engine break-in. Can we rev-match during engine break-in? Will the sudden throttle input harm the engine?

I have read the whole 350+ post thread and have learnt a lot. Thank you all. Also, please consider on adding me to the R3 whatsapp group. Cheers!
