    Its been a week that I came back from more than 2k+ kms ride, rode on 6 lane highways, ECR, mountains, forest, city, town, village, during all possible times of the day/night and on all possible weather and what not, for about 5 days on my Bagheera (RE Himalayan), I faced "ZERO" issues, people complain about all the issues and stuffs, I didn't even face a puncture and right after the trip Bagheera is back to his commuter mode without any fuzz, In terms of issues thanks to the service guys at HSR Sudhamanagar (Bangalore) did all the corrections proactively, not once did I get stranded, however I did face a problem once that is the stupid saree guard broke and they did replace it promptly under warranty, However, I've removed it though after getting the saddle stay, What else to say it's going to be 18k kms within a year and it has served me awesomely well, without any issues so far.

    PS :- Did this trip solo.

    PPS :- I'm not a RE fan boy, however, I love my Bagheera hence the handle name RE "H".

    • Royal Enfield Pathetic Part Quality Saga

      The saga of Royal Enfield pathetic part quality continues. The coil of Altaf Khalifa‘s Himalayan burned for the second time. The first time this happened just after we entered India from Nepal. We jump started the Himalayan using a Tiger’s rear wheel and limped it to Lucknow. Luckily this time the Royal Enfield showroom at Ratnagiri was close by. The Himalayan was out of warranty. But the folks at the dealership sought and received an approval from Royal Enfield to replace the entire coil, magnet and flywheel assembly under warranty.



      When the technician opened the part from the packaging to fit it, Altaf noticed something weird with one of the magnets on the flywheel. A gentle rub of the finger broke the magnet and pieces of it came loose. If this part was installed in the Himalayan there is no telling what more damage would have been caused.





      Since the Himalayan’s magnet and flywheel was fine, Altaf asked the technician to replace just the coil. We don’t know how long this coil will last. According to Altaf, the coating on the wires of the coil maybe of substandard quality, which is why the wires touch each other causing them to burn. The Lucknow dealership told Altaf that his was the 15th bike whose coil had burned. The Ratnagiri one said that this was their 5th case. Exact same problem.

      People reading my blog and watching my videos think that I hate the Himalayan. That isn’t the case. I’m not a fan of it’s looks or it’s heavy weight. But it’s a nice motorcycle. I’ve seen my friends do wonderful things with this bike, on and off road.

      What I absolutely hate is the fact that it can and will break down frequently, just like a regular Royal Enfield. But the difference is that unlike other Enfields where you can tweak something yourself to get it back up and running, when the Himalayan breaks down, you are left immobilized. I mean, it breaks down properly. Full and final satyanas. There are no back up systems to fall back on. For example, there is no kick start of the electric start fails. And it will. For more than one reason. The coil getting burned is just one of them.

      I will never buy a Himalayan, or any Royal Enfield motorcycle for that matter, until the company gets its shit together. They know that whatever crap they build there will always be fans who will wait for months in line to buy it. So why bother about quality? In my mind Royal Enfield is a marketing company who just happens to manufacture and sell motorcycles.

      I hope Royal Enfield doesn’t manufacture too many of the new EFI Himalayans. I say this because whoever had to buy a Himalayan most probably already has. The regular “thumper” fans don’t consider the Himalayan to be an Enfield. It doesn’t look, sound or feel like a classic motorcycle they are used to fussing over.

      I feel Royal Enfield should stick to building their regular thumpers which aren’t ridden too far away from civilization. Royal Enfield had one chance at a budget adventure tourer and they blew it.

      • Royal Enfield Himalayan Crank Nut Fix



        The nut you see at the center of the picture is what I believe to be a major potential screw up in the Royal Enfield Himalayan. I say this because it needs to be torqued to a right value so that it doesn’t come loose. If it comes loose then the woodruff key locating the crank to the flywheel shears and the crank refuses to turn when you fire the electric starter motor. Without a kick start you are left immobilized. Jump starting the motorcycle is impossible since the crank isn’t rotating.

        While replacing the coil of my friend's Himalayan at the Royal Enfield dealership in Ratnagiri, he asked the technician to check if the nut was torqued properly. The technician found a ring spanner, slotted it around the nut and whacked the spanner with his hand. No torque wrench. I’m not sure if he even knew what a torque wrench looked like. And this isn’t a roadside mechanic who uses brute force for any and everything. This is a supposedly trained and certified technician at an official Royal Enfield workshop. If this is the way certified technicians work on motorcycles then Royal Enfield should have used a lock nut instead of a regular cheap nut.

        If you own a Himalayan, then next time you take it for a service, ask the technician to use a couple of drops of loctite or something similar to secure this nut properly. If you don’t own a Himalayan, do your good deed for the day and share this with someone who does.

            Awesome, Jinx. I too did a 2k blr-rameswaram-kanyakumari-kerala-bangalore trip solo. Not even a niggle. I had the same issue as the saree guard and on my way back home i stopped by btm service n got it removed.

              Just to update my Himalayan has completed 6 months and 4800 kms, got the 2nd servicing done today. Total bill worked out to be Rs. 200.

                Hello bikers

                I am a proud owner of a KTM RC 200 and did some 14K kms on it. I wanted to go for an upgrade but then i gave a thought to go touring and off roading as well not just cornering and mountain carving. I have been shuffling through pages of reviews and tons of videos. Coming to tourers in my budget, I have been following mahindra mojo, bajaj dominar and himalayan. I have watched every possible video, read every possible review and ownership experiences on these bikes. No matter how many reviews i have been through, it will not be as good as you fellow bikers' honest opinion who live with a himalayan daily.


                I have done some 1K kms on my friend's Himalayan once and i felt though it was bit underpowered in cruising section, it makes for that part in off road (had it for a week.. Ooh that comfort compared to my RC) . So here I am, to ask u guys for your valuable opinions on considering himalayan as my upgrade. I wanna know if any other person here went through the similar decision making cycle.

                Personally i like Himalayan's look and its stance compared to other tourers. I think himalayan is the true off roader compared to other tourers. Sadly, most of the reviews are complaining about build quality and other problems. Even my friend's bike had some parts replaced within a year. Any news on the FI version would be great since everything i read on the Internet is flagged as a rumour. I don't bother much about ABS or any of those hitech stuff (though rc made my life easy most of the times). So, is himalayan really the only bike that I am gonna need?

                  Now showroom (kerala) guys said that they hope to deliver FI version from september onwards.

                    Hey guys I'm new to the forum, I have owned my Himalayan for a month now and have done about 1000 kms on my bike but I am experiencing engine cutouts while driving between 1000 and 2000 rpm
                    If I'm commuting localy and trying to drive slow the bike stalls and looses power suddenly. The problem goes away once I have driven for 30 minutes or so and the engine is hot. Has anyone experienced this? Please advise me what to do.
                    I have done the first and second service already.

                      owned for a month till now? i booked on April and that's 3 months now. how did you got your himalayan a month ago ? i would hv bought even a bs3 if stock was available back on april month.

                            I will keep it short. I have been using H for about 6 months now (got it in Jan), done about 10K kms. Things that I have got replaced are clutch set, cone set, tapper roller bearings - all under warranty. Apart from this only issue I feel is the rear wheel locking during panic braking (thanks to stupid on roads who take U-Turns without any indicators). It isn't a powerful bike, so if you are looking for that, this isn't the bike for you. There are concerns about reliability, but I haven't faced anything so far (touchwood). The earlier models (initial releases) have had more issues. Not to support RE - But the service guys replace parts proactively without much fuss.

                            I ride between 80-100kmph, so for that speed H is really good. The best part of the bike is the comfort (for the rider and for the pillion) and the suspension. The suspension takes up everything and anything. Even my wife doesn't feel anything. It's like this - The world overtakes H in Highways, but H overtakes the world in speedbreakers and bad roads. I have ridden on bad roads, slush, slopes, it goes/pulls very comfortably. I would have liked to have ABS but then I have learnt the braking (one gets accustomed to it).

                            With the FI version, only thing I would suggest is wait for the release, get reviews from riders and then decide putting your money on it. Else look for other options - D390 or D400.

                            It's a very hands-on bike. You may at one point also want to learn and try meddling with your bike on your own.
                            FI version is to be out by End of July or Mid-Aug is hat I heard from the Dealer showroom I go for service. And even I was confused between D400 and H. I opted for H. Do Test Drive - D390 and D400 as well, if you can rent it for a day and take a long trip so that you are in a better position to decide which suits you better.

                              Hello, I was pretty much in the same situation. Only reason I rejected Himalayan (it's a brilliant bike) after sales service & reliability.
                              Picked up the D390 and no regrets. Yes there are niggles & ktm is working on their resolution.
                              Power. Yes the RC200 & the Himalayan are on par with a difference of weight, comfort, ergonomics which make them a lot different. BUT that power & torque figures for a 400+cc bike - nah. I felt the RC underpowered on highways. Didn't want to go for the same end result.

                              D390 is on the other hand more powerful, torquey and they do have good after sales service. Yes not an exact tool for off roading. But off-roading isn't a daily thing. Most highways are pretty good bar rainy & post rains season. I rode both and then picked the Duke & feel it's worth it. The RC never gave me any troubles. Hoping for the same from the duke. Touchwood.

                              I'll say go for the 2017 390. It's seating is better accommodating for taller folks unlike older 390. It's more refined and more calmer. Power rushes through only when you need. Sintered brakes. ABS. What more do you need.

                              live long.. live happy.. that's the best revenge that can be served to the people who hate you..

                                Is there any guaranty that after warranty those part not have to change again? it feels god to change so many parts in warranty period but you will fill the pain when warranty ENDs.
