I applied a rubber coating on the original roller. I just wanted to check and it works just fine.
You did a DIY for the original roller? Or it was given by TVS per your earlier post which claimed to be fixed by TVS.

Yes it was done for the bigger original roller. I had a vague idea of what was happening. So thr dealer and me decided to go ahead with this, and it works. This diy was done at the svc, however you can do it yourself as well. But remember that sound is completely normal.

      • TVS Apache RR310 : Buying Experience

        Hello guys…!!!

Finally got some time to pen down my purchase experience of RR ( not a review or a first impression). Yes I brought my Black Beauty home on 23rd June. After much struggle and months of patience finally fulfilled my dream. Without further ado, let’s dive into my purchase experience.
Disclaimer: I tried to shortened the report but then I decided to express my complete experience and ended up with quite a big post.

        New bike decision:

I ride Hero Honda Hunk 2011 model, first digital , LED variant. It is such an wonderful machine, super smooth engine and had a trouble free ownership. The engine has good performance, but the handling is where it lags and I wanted to have a proper upgrade especially in this handling aspects.
In 2014 when HX was unveiled, the thought of acquiring a new bike crossed my mind, added to that my uncle wanted to change his bike which served him for almost 15years now. So I told him, he can take my HUNK while I buy a new one. I was patiently waiting for HX250 to launch, only to know later that it will never happen. Then due to my official work had to leave chennai and hence dropped the new bike plan.

August 2017, after almost 1.5 years I returned from my official trip. This time I planned for R3 and I had the savings ready. When I was about to book R3, Yamaha dropped a bomb, they pulled R3 out of the Indian market , courtesy BS3 norms. I was waiting for the relaunch but it never happened. Meanwhile I was not able to hold onto my savings due to personal commitments. Added to that I don’t have any other bike in my mind, so I just postponed my purchase until I find a proper upgrade.

        May be RR ? :

Somewhere in October 2017, Meanwhile saw some spy pics of RR 310. Then one fine day, out of nowhere TVS released a teaser and teased the launch date of RR. I was bit excited. Thought I could keep RR in my list too. Then came the leak pics of the actual production version of RR with the colour schemes. I was blow away by the look, the design is something which we never expected from TVS or any Indian manufacturers for that matter. Finally 6th Dec 2017 , I was in a presentation in my office, but was secretly streaming the live launch event of RR on my mobile and didn’t pay attention to the presentation at all ( felt like college days ). I was very much excited and also sending pics & spec details to my friends through Whatsapp.

        RR it is :

Soon after reaching home in the evening, I watched all videos and read all possible articles on RR in the internet. Few days of following the media ,I realize that RR is more practical , be it in seating posture or the power delivery. Hence finally I kept RR on top of my list followed by may be R3 if relaunched, yet still no word on R3 relaunch. Meanwhile I tried gathering as much as info about RR and they were all positive. But still I didn’t book the bike, and decided to wait for few more months since it’s a brand new to the market. The media reviews and ownership reviews were out and Iam pretty impressed with the reviews.

        Iam convinced :

April 2018 1st week,I wanted to take a TD or see the bike in flesh atleast . So went to the RR showroom. There, i saw for the first time, the beauty , the astonishing design and the craftsmanship.

Both the colours were kept for display I was drooling over the display bike for long time until i got interrupted by the sales guy. Had a small chit chat regarding price, waiting period with him and then he took me to the service station where I saw around 20 new RRs there, to be delivered who have booked 3 months ago . Sat on the bike and felt comfortable, or at least not aggressive as RC. I told him that I will be booking the bike next week only and left the showroom with a big grin on my face .

        The Booking :

My booking was delayed by a month due to some personal commitments. I tried to take TD , called another showroom which is near to my office, but no TD available.
I contacted my trusted friend who also got RR and discussed with him in detail about RR and finally came to a conclusion to book RR without taking TD
        .
28th April 2018, Called the dealer and informed him about my arrival. Reached the showroom and got details about the price . Then i saw the display bike , red RR.

Payed the booking amount and booked the black colour. Surprisingly I was told that I can get the bike within a week. But unlucky me, I can take delivery only after a month, again personal commitment.

        23rd May 2018
, Finally I was ready to proceed with the purchase. Called the dealer and asked him to inform me once new batch is arrived and I will select one from the warehouse. He accepted my request and called me after a week that new batch has come. Went to the warehouse along with a TVS mechanic. Checked 4 bikes which were wrapped, and all the bikes were identical in engine rhythm, I chose the one which had a tiny bit of refined engine sound ( or may be an illusion ).

Took the pic of chassis number, the bike is from 6th lot and date of manufacture was 7th May 2018. Returned to the showroom payed the full amount and got the receipt for OTR price 2.40Lakhs precisely.

        The day was marked :

My RR delivery was delayed due to the some server upgrade in RTO office and also I requested for pre-booking of the registration number , so i have to wait till my requested number sequence to arrive.

21st June 2018, received a text from RTO office , that my registration is complete and the number allotted to me was the same number that I requested. Called the dealer immediately, confirmed the completion of registration and requested the delivery on 23rd June afternoon ( Saturday). The entire day went like slow motion fight sequence .

        23rd June 2018
, Finally the day has come, which happened to be my birthday too . Myself, my brother, uncle, and my cousins reached the showroom by 3.30.
I entered the front gate of the showroom, many apaches and ntorqs were parked. I was searching for my love, but couldn't able to find her. Approached the stairs ( which leads to the showroom located on the first floor) and when i just looked ahead, i was awestruck, there she is staring at me, hiding in a corner and wanting me to take her home.
This is the exact sight when i saw her.

Currently my odo stands at approx. 250KMs. Enjoying every moment with her. Since the post is so long, I decided to split the initial impression review as a separate post.
I will be covering the impressions in all aspects , including the comparison with its competition ( my view) and why i chose RR.

Thanks for reading such a long post. Hope you guys enjoyed, or at least didn’t get bored.

As the chain is long and swingarm is also long compared to normal bikes, and it is for this reason companies has used the chain slider/guide over the swing arm to prevent the chain from hitting it.
The best solution to reduce the chain issue is to keep the chain lubricated and make sure that the chain slack is at recommended level which for Dominar's case is 20 to 30mm and i guess it would be same for 310rr.
No matter how much adjustment u do to the chain , there is no way to avoid it from hitting the slider and that slider is there for this job.
Make sure that the slider is always in good health means it remains at its place.
I have seen many owners keeping the chain over tight to avoid the noise , which is not good for the chain set. And sometimes owners end up employing some sort of juggad fix to make the chain stretched to avoid the hitting which ia also bad. As the chain should always have the recomended slack to avoid breakage and other serious issues.

Other important point is the clean the front sproket at regular intervals , say for example clean it at every alternate chain clean or whenever u feel it is getting mucky

And yes there would be a issue if the chain is hitting something other then the slider.

Keep lubing the chain regularly say at every 300 to 500 kms these bikes run at higher rpm and the chain is open and it does get dry faster the normal chains, in my case with dominar i lube it every 300 to 400kms and i use gear oil ep90 in winters and ep140 in summers as it remains for a longer period and is a economical option.

Just wipe the chain properly with a lint free cloth before lubing this would also help u in avoiding frequent cleaning.

And lastly i hope i don't offend anyone by posting here.
Very very well explained. We need neat explainations as these.

However, I would like to differ a bit. Thr chain doesn't make the noise from the guide slider. The actual noise is from the tensioner roller. Once it's covered with a softer material, there is literally zero noise of the chain hitting anywhere. Covered 3000kms with it, so yeah I can probably vouch for it.

People feel free to cover the roller with a softer material say a cycle tube. However newer updated rollers are smaller in diameter, so the noise is 75% less. I can probably post the actual size of my bike's roller for comparison.

Nice but i think the cycle tube would be easily eaten by the chain and end up choking the front sproket.
But it is good to know that tvs is giving updates to resolve the issues.

2 layers of it and it's good to go. And as mentioned you can check pic, there's zero wear and tear. Because the tensioner only comes into play when there is high chain movement and not always.

No bhai nothing like this in Dominar, it just has a chain slider over the swingarm.
In Dominar the chain touches the bottom front part of the slider at low speeds on rough roads.

oh, got it. May be RR has even longer swing arm and hence the roller.

                        Good job writing that mate.

Guys, Sorry to barge into the thread, but was going through the last few pages of this thread and the chain noise part caught my attention.
I have no plans for RR310 but am eagerly waiting for the g310GS. These bikes being essentially pretty much same under the skin, am dreading the tak tak sound there. Those of you familiar with first gen duke 390 (which i had) would know that bike had a very sensitive chain. If bit loose, and it use to make tak tak sound while riding over uneven surfaces. Many were not bothered with the sound, but it use to irritate the hell out of me. Maybe some sort of sound based OCD.
RR310 riders, can you share your thoughts on how bad this chain sound it and how much better with updated roller? Also share your feedback on the low-end torque of the engine. Can we ride the bike at say 20kmph or lower in (say) 2nd gear without lugging the engine? 390 was a high strung, happy-to-rev type engine which did not suit my riding style. Is this RR310 engine on similar lines, or a bit more torquey towards the lower revs, where we dont have to shift gears frequently. Do share your thoughts.

Yes, it can go 20kph on 2nd gear without bogging. Below 15 kph it will struggle and stall on 2nd gear. If u have time, go through my ownership review. I have detailed about this low end speeds.
I don't have any tak tak noice in chain. I bought the bike on mid May. I don't know anything about earlier rr 310 batches as other people have complained here about the chain. I think they have updated to a better chain roller compared to earlier batches. Engine vibration is one thing though. But it's the same case with all high cubic capacity single cylinder engines. It will be interesting to see how BMW handles this problem.

We can speak only with respect to RR. There is no comparison if u take lower end pull between RR and ktm. RR engine is way more tractable in lower end. I used to ride 15kmp in second gear without any help from clutch lever. 42kmph on 6th gear is a peice of cake. More over you will most probably end up with riding on higher gear at lower speed if u go by your riding instinct, that's how good the lower end torque is.. But no idea on BMW twin. They have different final drive ratio and fuel mapping /ecu
