If you read the post in full you will understand..Holding the choke will pump in more petrol through the choke circuit in the carburetor ,making the Air Fuel Ratio(AFR) very rich. That is why the vehicle switches off.Choke is meant for cold start when there is a rich AFR mix required TEMPORARILY.So holding it will prevent the bike from running,as the engine will be flooded with too rich AF mix..After starting the CHOKE SHOULD NOT BE HELD OPEN.

          • A/F mixture

Can the a/f mixture affect the engine vibes? Does a leaner mix make the engine work harder and hence produce a little bit more vibes compared to optimal/richer mixture.

I suspect my bike is running lean. I rode a friend's bike and his was way smoother and also pick up in each gear was better. The engine revved very easily compared to mine. And the vibes were very less.

Yes leaner AFR will make the engine vibrate more .Setting AFR ,a little on the rich side is always better.

Are you riding your bike regularly or you have garaged it ?Every early morning start with choke will produce slight smoke initially.Bikes with auto choke will work better than Manual choke. If the AFR setting had not been disturbed ,then check Air Filter for clogging.

Best way to diagnose...Take out the spark plug and see the center electrode color. If it is coated with dry sooty carbon deposit..then it is running rich.If it is oily black deposit it is excess oil in chamber.Could be Valves stem seal leak or the piston ring had jammed or worn .
The plug tells you what is happening inside the engine

                        • ^^I think that means you're running rich.

I played around with the a/f screw. Turned it half a turn (anti-clockwise) and now my bike feels better. My big question,

How do i remove the spark plug. Never done it. Can someone guide me how to do it? Thanks

                          • Guys,

My bike has covered 8300 kms and I took her for service to Castrol Bike zone as Im fed up with TVS and its TRU4..

The mechanic there says that my rear disc is worn out How can the disc be worn out at 8300kms on odo? But there was lots of noise coming from my rear disc for the past two days I asked him to just clean the discs and give me and not change it. I also changed my rear disc pad at 6k on odo..

How to check the health of the discs? any suggestions?

If the deposit is dry without trace of oil(stickiness) then you are running very rich.Check your Air filter and get it cleaned.Take it to a mechanic and get the AFR adjusted.

For removing the spark plug a tool named "spark plug BOX spanner" is available. It will be in your tool kit.Put the box spanner on the spark plug till it goes all the way, then insert the "tommy" bar given,.. in to the spanner hole and TURN IN ANTI CLOCKWISE direction. To tighten do the reverse.Make sure you tighten the spark plug well,or you will have problems with the running of bike.
For the first time it is better you take it to a mechanic and see how he does it and learn.
