That was not a welcome move by Marquez, I know he wants to win it all, but this is not a contact sport. He would have ruined Rossi's day and eventually his own day, all thanks to Rossi's experience and his skills that didnt happen.

Very amateurish behaviour from Marquez. If it would have been his first season in MotoGP then I would have understood it but this is his 3rd season and moreover he is a defending Champion. Hope he learns.

Well done Rossi! Gap is now 10 points.

Without saying much more about it, I feel it was just a spontaneous reaction from Rossi more than anything to save his race. This is part of his unbelievable and natural race craft. No body in this world, nobody would deliberately run off track especially on gravel for any advantage whatsoever, that too on final two corners in a last lap. It's too risky to execute even with a plan! That's what I feel at least. Corskscrew is different, as far as I remember it has always been comparatively more tarmarc-ed. And somehow I wonder the intent behind designing such "interesting" corners.. if you know what I mean

We are blessed people, that we are witnessing such epicness. I'm sure my neighbors can hear me when I'm shouting at the tv screen. My hands went numb for few seconds that I clapped so hard when Rossi crossed the finish line... hahahaa
        This.
        In other words, racing genius.
I think he's been the first rider to actually win a race going through the gravel at the last corner.
Usually that's a sure way to lose it...

I too was doing the same thing. Shouting and clapping hard, and finally the big jump when he crossed the line. We should all watch the race together. I am sure most of us here also watch Moto3 and Moto 2 as well.

I read that too. Very nicely put together. This should let MM know that VR is a different rider all together. He isn't the kind who can be bullied to give away his position. And I really love the way Rossi gives it back.

I hope Rossi continues the way he is riding, and I think I should book myself for Malaysian GP this year. Who would want to miss his 10th championship title.

Spending thousands of Euros for "The Ranch" wasn't a bad idea after all!

Opening the throttle there did a world of good for him else, perhaps, it 'd have been a different story.

he was also very lucky that assen's last corner is the way it is - not really a corner but a chicane...if the corner where MM and VR collided had continued into a straight or into a further right hander or even a tight left hander, his race would have been ruined and he wouldnt have won it, which, considering his impressive ride all through the race, would have been tragic...in any other track, an event like this would have resulted in rossi not winning it because except for assen no other track's last corner is that chicane-type where briefly "cutting" straight across the gravel lands you perfectly directed into the finishing straight..

as already said above, it was an impressive ride by rossi, but also by MM, particularly in the last few corners in which he somehow managed to close all that gap which he had from rossi at the start of the last lap...but the dude has to urgently learn to contain himself at times and sometimes accept a close defeat..however having said that, i am not finding myself too critical of him in regards to the incident..it wasnt nearly as bad as jerez 2013 with lorenzo which was truly the most dangerous and stupid and desperate move anyone has ever made (and then got away with) in the history of motogp probably, and also this time his controversial incident was with rossi who himself has made some very controversial moves in his career (:P), so somehow i am not feeling so offensive on him..

good rides by lorenzo and iannone too (whats up with dovi lately?)...JL saved the day and it was more a race of damage limitation for him after 4 straight wins from 103 leading laps...assen's not been good for him for years now..starting to love JL's highly aggressive run for the first few corners when the race starts lol..

                    Just read this on motogp.com
"For want of a better phrase, he got his Assen kicked. Next time around, the boot might be on the other foot.

This time though, The Doctor gave him a taste of his own medicine."

Taking nothing from Marc, he can't always be faster or tougher. He also needs to be smarter than Rossi to beat him.

This is what smith had to say about the last corner move-
""Valentino played the circumstance perfectly to his advantage," said Smith. "He made sure Marc hit him so then he had to go across the gravel and no one can say anything. That's finally what it is.

"There's however many years of experience right there. That's what he did. He closed the door. He timed it perfectly so that when Marc went for it he hit him and knocked him off the track. Then you can't say anything because Valentino can say 'I went straight because Marc hit me and I had the lead going into the chicane so I didn't technically gain an advantage'."

Some bad luck. This time his saddle clamp broke. He was riding with a broken seat!

Pedrosa had a clutch problem at the start and front brake problems for the rest of the day. Bad luck for him too.

Further down the order, Laverty then Hayden got bumped by Miller, thus pushing them down the order and Barbera got taken out by the wild Australian.

                      Luck!

Yamaha vs Honda. Checa Vs Ukawa Assen 2002. Last corner, cutting it fine! Ukawa on the Repsol Honda did exactly what Marquez tried. Dove down the inside at the start of the chicane, ran Checa off track into the gravel forcing him to cut the corner. But in this instance Ukawa was unable to straighten the bike as he touched the grass thus crashing out. Marquez on the other hand ran it wide onto the astroturf and didn't fall. Replace the astroturf with grass and the result might have been the same as 13 years ago.

Nicky Hayden Vs Colin Edwards Assen 2006. Hayden tries to pass leader Edwards round the outside as they hit the chicane. Hayden is unable to stop the bike to make the corner goes through the gravel straight up and comes out on top to win the race. Edwards tries to make the chicane, loses control and crashes out.

                      Another angle -

Thanks to David Emmett for pointing out these incidents on Twitter!

In other words, you can't take the chicane from inside. If you do and have another rider on the outside he'll definitely have a faster line to the finish. The only thing you can do is, dive up the inside, expect the other rider to go wide enough into the gravel and not carry enough speed to ride out faster than you. :P

IT's probably the best set of corners in MotoGP calender. A visual delight. The thing with Assen chicane is that the rider coming from outside can carry more speed into the corner, which is what Rossi did as he was in "that" position. He was in front. David Emett puts it perfectly, the rider in front has the right to everything. While the following rider can execute a pass which is absolutely ok especially in the last lap, but as long as the pass isn't complete, the rider in front can very well close the doors

Did anyone see how Cal Crutchlow pulled virtually the exact same move (that MM pulled on VR) on Dani Pedrosa during the race???

Coming into the chicane, Dani left a gap, and Cal lunged in ala Marquez style, just not as aggressively.

Cal bumped into Dani and pushed him wide.

Dani stood the bike up, cut the corner, and missed riding over the gravel by a few inches.

Crutchlow was able to stay on track, and came out of the chicane in front of Dani.
