Goa budget proposes to reduce petrol price by Rs.11 a litre

March 26 (IANS) In a step that will make petrol in Goa the cheapest in India, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Monday proposed a reduction in prices of the by Rs.11 per litre in the state.
Petrol for as cheap as Rs.55 per litre was one of the main promises of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) in its election manifesto for the March 3 assembly polls.

Parrikar said that only 0.1 per cent value added tax (VAT) component would be levied by the state government for sake of record. "I propose to reduce by Rs.11 per litre to save commuters from inflation," Parrikar said, presenting his first budget after his party came to power in the state.

Once the budget is passed, the price of petrol in Goa would be the cheapest in the country at Rs.55. Petrol in Goa is presently priced at approximately Rs.66 per litre. The reduction of petrol price is expected to provide major relief to a large section of the 14 lakh-odd population in Goa, which has one two-wheeler for every three resident citizens. As of 2011, the state had 5.33 lakh two-wheelers registered in the state.

Parrikar also said that in order to lure aviation companies to refuel at the Goa airport, VAT on aviation fuel would be reduced from 22 per cent to 12 per cent.

Nice, but to make up the shortfall the government of Goa is introducing an entry tax on all vehicles registered outside of Goa.

Actually Booze prices were raised in the same budget proposal that reduced VAT on petrol. Considering consumption of both in Goa, I guess the govt. will still turn up with a net profit.

Karnataka: Petrol likely to be cheaper by Rs 15.5 per litre

Bangalore, Mar 29: Petrol prices in Karnataka might get cheaper by Rs 15.5 per litre as the government is likely to withdraw the VAT on petrol.

Petrol is currently priced at Rs 73.51 per litre in the state and after the prices are slashed it will come down to Rs 58 per litre, said reports.

Currently the state government imposes 25% VAT on petrol and 5% entry tax on the same, claimed Bhushan Narang, President of Karnataka Federation of Petrol Dealers’ Association.

Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee also announced a reduction in the petrol prices by Rs 15 per litre in metros if they follow the path of Goa.

Earlier, Goa had announced a reduction in the price of petrol by Rs 11 per litre.

"I propose to reduce petrol price by Rs 11 per litre to save commuters from inflation," said Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar while presenting the budget.

Reports reveal that Delhi might also follow Goa's suite and reduce petrol price by Rs 15 per litre.

If this turns out to be true, the Centre might well ask the rest of the States to follow. Cutting down prices on petrol is gawd damn the need of the hour.
