Just think abt this. If BAL can claim an economy of 55+ kmpl from a 200cc engine of P200NS, i don't see why they can't extract good mileage from a similar 125cc engine.

And with 15Nm of peak power this engine can surely sprint.

With above two points BAL has a very strong point of making it big in this segment - "sports commuter"

I don't think its a engine from KTM.. coz in a picture, you can see the cooling fins... so its a air cooled engine..

i am asking this coz, i have checked with quite a few of d150 & P135's, they loose steam after a while.

      mine is P150 UG3.

bajaj is not foolish to plonk a duke engine in discover which is purely a commuter.
and the question remains why do i race?

@ antz.bin: You've written a very intelligent post. The concept about including rider's weight in the power to weight ratio is something I always wanted to convey (or maybe I did in some other topic). Its the damn truth.

I'm not really sure whether Duke's engine can be commuterized or not. But, a lot of internal tweaks can definitely get the work done. Remember, its more of a slightly oversquare engine with 58 x 47.2mm or something. And its not necessary for a Duke derived engine to be liquid cooled only.

I admit that I don't know the actual truth but the reason I'm stressing on this theory is that, do you really think after praises of KTM performance in the media, Bajaj will make an engine, solely on their own?
If I were Bajaj, I would definitely use KTM machines' aid in updating most of the update-able machines to a new level. And the obvious donor would be Duke 125.

Make it SOHC, 2 valve DTSi with a BS26 carburettor, and a different exhaust with Exhaustec. And it should drop the peak torque by a good margin. Can take it upto 5500 rpm I'm sure. And like I said before, peak torque doesn't matter for the commuter. The spread of the torque matters more for the commuter.

Just add your weight to the bike weight (since somebody has to ride the bike, it won't run on its own ) and the Power:Weight ratio of P150 will rise above the other 2.

Assuming Rider weight of 68kg (Standard value used by BAL)
Bike : Power : Weight : Weight + Rider Weight : Power to Weight Ratio
          D150 : 13.00 Ps : 121kg : 189kg : 68.78 PS/Tonne
          P135 : 13.50 Ps : 122kg : 190kg : 71.05 Ps/Tonne
          P150 : 15.06 Ps : 143kg : 211kg : 71.37 Ps/Tonne

About the bit in Purple, P135 is more stable due to its engine? Way more stable than? D150 Or P150 UG3?

The rest of it doesn't make any sense, at least not to the relevant topic.
Power to Weight Ratio of Made in India Motorcycles: 2012 Comparo | Bike Chronicles of India

could u xplain the lose STEAM after a while....
this is a question...what did he exactly mean to stay by lose steam...in the long run or cant keep up for a long time

p150 has more power obviously it will leave the d150 or p135 behind....
that came out wrong..i meant to say it has a higher displacement higher power figure so it obviously leaves the other 2 mentioned bikes behind

if power to weight ratio is to be considered the p135 and the bullet 350 twinspark are equal(111 and 112)

power to weight ratio shows how much flickable a bike is...
they were comparing power to weight of p150 and d150 and d150 has a higher power to weight ratio...but "princesirohi" mentioned he smokes d150 and p135 on highways

the point i was trying to covey is power to weight ratio doesnt determine who beats who...its a quantity to measure flickability/zippiness/whatever u wanna call it

if power to weight ratio determined who "smokes" who then how can u explain those figures for p135 and the bullet which are equal yet their performance is a class apart..i hope i made my point clear...

yet from what i knw the p135 is way more stable at higher speed and has a higher top speed too and is more flickable...

this is because the way the engine is made is completely different...
obviosuly more than d150...i am not comparing stability at higher speed of p150 and p135...i was pointing out higher top speed of p135 even though it has lower displacement than d150 and their peak power figures difference by 0.5 PS and same weight then why different performance

by this point i was trying to say how the power is distributed along the rev range and how the engine is made(over square under square etc etc) plus a 4 valve makes this difference

can i be any more clear then please do tell me

Of course, Bajaj are not going to make their own engine now.. the purpose of Duke platform 125cc to 350cc is to share & gain from economies of scale. Whatever you mentioned about making it SOHC with caruburettor already happened with P200NS & Duke. Certainly Pulsars are going to be based on the same platform as that of Duke from now on. That was repeated by Rajiv Bajaj time and again. There is a more than fair chance that even Discover gets the same platform, it makes lot of sense as Discover has been getting Pulsar derived engines so far.

Quoting this article KTM-Financial Structure, "The two companies have signed a cooperation deal, by which KTM will provide the know-how for joint development of the water-cooled 4-stroke 125 cc and 250 cc engines, and Bajaj will take over the distribution of KTM products in India and some other Southeast Asian nations."
So Bajaj is helping KTM by providing their resources and the distribution of KTM products in India & some Asian Countries through their network.
So in return they got the "know-how" or the technologies KTM applied. It might be the dimensions of bore, piston, the material used to make bore/piston, crankshafts etc. and what happens which improves the engine. So in short Bajaj lacked refinement and had some NV issues in which of-course KTM is good and also in developing power and making Liquid-cooled engines.
so after gaining this refinement thingy (which is imp in India), they would develop their own 150cc engine utilising the knowledge gained from KTM. You can't expect KTM to make a 150cc engine for them. And ofcourse Bajaj knows how to develop engines, they have been doing it for years. And 150cc Discover/Pulsar has to be there since it is a crucial segment in India.
I speculate this bike to be 150cc. 125cc seems to be small for the bulk it has.
                  Whats there in a signature?

lol instead of giving 2 huggers even though it has a mudguard, they should hav given 1 hugger like p135 for p220, btw still now we can see tat frame welded near footpeg which is wat they had to change in the first place

btw can anyone explain Sohc, dohc, ecu, and other parts of the engine, also can anyone tell why manufacturers use 3.0 or 2.75 to specify tyres for the commuter bikes....sorry for the OT

Yes my friend. I wasn't trying to ridicule you or make you feel small in the big bad world. I cannot possibly make you feel like an ant, because thats what I am (Yup, thats my real name, Anant ). Please go through both my posts between your two posts (including the tri-color one). It explains 'Mathematically' why Prince Sirohi feels that a D150 and P135 cannot keep up with a P150. It also explains why a certain bike is made the way it is by any manufacturer.

Even I have learnt from reading what the experienced people wrote. I suggest you to do the same. Google is our friend and helps us do all our homework. If you still don't get the crux of something, we all are here to help.
