Sweet ride man, and I'm sure there are loads of mods in the pipeline to make her unique

One thing though, for me, Carlitos will always be, Shantanu, the guy with the yellow R6

      Congrads and nice ride dude!
For some reason I missed your thread, probably because I was out of town when you posted the thread.
I love the exhausts in the R1. Just curious (probably a stupid question), does it get uncomfortable in traffic/low speeds (or riding for a long time) with the exhaust pipes running close to the legs/seat?

Any bike with an under tail exhaust will get comfortable in traffic and low speeds. This has been a known issue, but it doesnt seem to have bothered manufacturers from continuing with this configuration and it hasnt stopped people from buying. You just have to keep them moving at a decent pace to avoid the heat. Mind you, its a boon in the winter time, at least on the west coast where you can ride during the winters.

BTW, the exhaust is gonna go soon

Dude, dont say that, if your FZ hears that, it would be heartbreaking for her.

                    Couple of thoughts and clarifications:

2009-2011 Euro R1 is not the same as the 2009-2011 North American R1.

All you folks in India should be happy about the above statement, because all of you got the best version of the cross plane R1. The North American version (09-11) R1 or as it is better known as the Neutered version, is a de-tuned version of the Euro version. Thanks to American emission laws, Yamaha was forced to make changes to the ECU for the North American version. The throttle bodies do-not open fully. So the North American version is down about 6-8 hp than the euro version.

Remember the debate about how lots of Euro journalists were all praise for the 09-11 R1 while the American journalists were not so impressed?
Yup this is the reason. The de-tuned version that i happen to ride, is down 6-8 hp at top end. And so, you all might have noticed, one of the gripes of journalists on this side of the world is lack of top end performance. My R1 hits the rev limiter some 1000 rpm before it hits say on..Fireblah's brothers R1.

How does one get around this?
                    2 options,
                    1. Buy a Euro version ECU.
                    2. Get your ECU flashed.

Getting your ECU flashes, voids your warranty. A company called Jett Tunning (ECU Unleashed) provides this service here in the US for 400$.
They basically plug in your ECU and flash it with the Euro maps. They remove the restrictions Yamaha installed for the US version. They can also do a bunch of other things. For example raise the idle rpm for your bike. Further reduce engine braking by making changes to your maps, so basically the ECU still pumps small amounts of fuel during deceleration.
This seems to have become a major mod for the R1 in the US. Lot of American magazines are also doing this mod to their test bikes and report gains of 6-8 hp.
Also, even the new ZX10R being sold in the US is a Neutered version. ECU Unleashed can flash its ECU as well.

Just thought of enlightening you all about this.
Do i plan on doing this mod. Not yet. I don't know if i want more top end for what i use the bike for. Although i'd like the bike to perform the way Yamaha intended it to. As of now, i have more important mods in mind

                    • i wonder how the fz1 would be with a crossplane
and yes it is very much speculated that the crossplane might be removed from the big R. what could be the reason?

Did you get to check the exhausts out before buying or are you getting them online? I am sure you will have some pics up after the mod!

Have done a lot of research, heard videos and basically asked for advice from fellow forum members on the r1-forum.
Will be placing an order hopefully next week. Pictures and video will follow.

Its been our dream to get the TRIO back on track after the Gixxer 600 got stolen and the CBR 600RR was wrecked. We are finally back on 2 wheels
