About an hour later, post-dinner, we decided to ride out to meet some friends and I wanted to have a go on the R1. The bike suddenly felt so TINY compared to the MT-01. It really does feel like an RX-100 after you ride a bullet for many years

The sound and the way it builds revs are so different from the MT-01 that you stop and wonder how Yamaha decided to bring two incredibly disconnected motorcycle philosophies to India. It would have made far more sense to show up with the FZ1 and the R1. The MT-01 seems like a diabolical spin on their part to Shock and Awe!!!!...because that is what the MT-01 does!

While the R1 is a precision blade in the hands of a Surgeon...the MT-01 is a chainsaw in the hands of a pyromaniac

After a short ride on the R1 I decided that it was clearly not the bike for me. The aggressive riding posture and the lack of bottom end grunt wouldn't work out for someone as large and heavy as me. The MT-01 lacks the outright performance and manic powerband of the R1 but it puts such a big smile on my face...and such a big hole in my checkbook.

I love both these bikes and thanks to Akhil...i'll get to experience them as often as I like. They are like apples and oranges...men and women...cats and dogs...and I'm loving every minute I get to spend with them
@gs: Surely a quip on bottom-friendliness of the two (Anatomical as against engine revolution-wise) is needed from the likes of you gs
So does Thor provide a tashrif-friendly seat or does Phwoar have the better saddle?

That is hard to say because I don't have wrist pain issues on Thor but Akhil doesn't have wrist pain issues on-board Phwoar...so it is all a matter of preference. I like the R1 seat but the riding posture is too aggressive for my fat structure with a beer gut et al. I am a hog rider and thor is as close to hog as I'll get

Sorry Apar. Haven't been doing justice to my own thread

Status is: The R1 is running great, although I've not been riding it much. In fact, yesterday was the first time out in almost a month, and I took it straight away to do a clutch replacement. Should be done by tomorrow and will be running beautifully once again.
Planning to do some quick long runs in the coming days.

Will post up the cost of parts and spares for the clutch change once it is done.

            • what happened, why does it need a clutch replacement, is it because of the way you ride or faulty yamaha product, AGAIN.

I think the 180 is going into semi-retirement. Soon to be replaced with something more reliable, faster and RED!

Miss my MT-01 though...might just sneak up to Bangalore to say hello

Damn, what are you hinting at? Is it an r15?

How are the rains? Time to take the Mt back to mumbai?

Thor has a better, wider seat, whereas the R1 seat is less spongy. THat said, I prefer Thor over long distances, with the exception of the wind blast of course.

You know what it is already

Still raining, and the MT and the R1 will be going in for a service camp which will be sometime in the 2nd week of October.

                              • A long overdue update:

The R1 has done about 10k now. She's running well and had a couple of irritants looked at during a service camp two weeks ago.

Cost of service: Rs. 5xx for the oil filter.
                                Oil: 3 litres Yamalube 20W40.. 2xx * 3.

The work done was fast and efficient, although a few niggles remain. I am supposed to be checking and giving them feedback for the resolution of the problem. Haven't been doing too much riding lately though.
