  • Is restoring RX100 worth the money?

    Let pour me out..

Not that I'm not happy with RX135 which I bought in 1998. However, right from school days, have a soft corner for RX100. Damn! I don't understand the reason why? Comparitively RX135 boasts no less to what it can deliver, somehow got stuck with RX100 mania. To be frank, whenever, I happen to see a shiny one and sings a note to my ears, my heart craves badly. I'm starting this discussion to find out if not me, someone who has an idea of restoring a 100.

Ok, let me come to the point. Here I'm trying to ascertain an idea of worthiness of purchasing RX100 and restoring it. Spares?!?! Is RX100 spares like core engine components are available in the market?

Recently YMIS has started to sell the Cylinder kit for RX100 and was all happy. After reading posts here about the supplied bore quality that is the clearance etc, it actually shattered all my school days dream. Thought to myself, what if all my efforts go in drain because of poor quality after spending some decent amount of money?

Cylinder kit is one of core components and if one buys the kit from YMIS, is there a way to get the clearance correction done? How far is that worth?

    Experts please educate.

    • ^^ I do have some RX100s lying around without papers. Just got to know yesterday. Lemme know if you want any dismantled, crated and couriered to you. ( Oh yeah, and a maroon RXZ 4 speed as well, with new body panels etc )

But restoration of a RX100 will be purely for the nostalgic value + the rep that it holds. It will make a good city commuter, but you already have one. The 135 is no way down on the 100.

Thanks, however, it would be a thought defying act to buy a RX100 without papers. My worry is about the new cylinder kit which many have thrown criticism.

        • ^^ Need to check one out in person. Im sure the quality could/would be inferior.

Without paper machines make good donors. You can use a lot of spares from em. These were lying in a police station ( Impounded and auctioned ).

            1. Many Authorised Yamaha dealers are selling fake bore kits for higher profit margins ... the fake ones have 36L0 (or 36L00) 98cc and I-1 written on them with an anodized finish.

            2. The piston tolerances do not match coz the bore and the pistons came from different sources ... If u r unfortunate enough to buy the fake block, an oversize piston will fix the issue .

            3. @jd666, if u get vehicles from police auctions, they will give u a certificate to re-register the bike from the RTO.

So what is written on the OE bore kits (original)? If the bore kits with expected identifier matches, is that good to buy from YMIS dealer?

If Yamaha 98CC written on the left what is written on the right side? G-1/E-1 series?

              • @sixspeedtwin - Thats what i understood also. But apparently there is no option left for these machines, other than being donors. The sale letter is there from the cops.

The original RX100 came with "Y" series (These were the ones with 'ART' piston) & later on with "G" series (these are the ones with Mahle Pistons).

"E" series are for RX135 only.

As far as 36L goes, it is the basic type code for RX100 as a complete bike, just like 4TL for RX135. The original Mikuni Carb for RX100 has this "36L 00" embossed near 2T oil Inlet & also the crank cases for entire RX series have part number starting from '36L', because it is the same for all.

As far as new cylinder kits are concerned, i have no first hand idea of how it performs or what the clearances are. The bore i have, was purchased 6Yrs back & it is the original "G" series block.

IMO, after owning a 135 for such a long time, you shouldn't go back to the 100, try the 350 or atleast the genuine 5-speeder.

And stay away from Police impounded bikes.

That was whole lot of information. Thanks Karthik.

If you had read my post earlier, was not trying to find the best out of RX100, just to satisfy my childhood dream. Not looking for one to rip or to get it performance oriented. Just to ride below 60kmph cruising along the ECR and the music to my ears! Let's see how I go about the dream.

@All:- Another question for the RX tires. I have bought Sirac Street 3.0 for the rear. Wondering what to buy for the front wheel?

OT:- There was an ad on the internet portal few days ago, RX100 Japanese Engine Rs. 44,000. So out of curiosity called to find out what has gone inside. He said it is 1987 model (wow!), since he sounded bit knowledgable, asked him what bore is it running, he said it is running on std E-2. Then quipped immediately that's 135 bore which is running on my 4 speeder. Then he mellowed a bit said it is converted to 135, 'Oh ok' so the crank assy should have changed too? He said, yes. Then asked him what is this bike Japanese is all about. He said it runs high speed touching 130s, asked how, he said light porting job was done. There was a silence, then he said ready to negotiate. I said your bike is not RX100 nor it is Japanese engine, he was like dumbstuck when I closed the call.
