Do they transport the bike via train.. Or is it Via Roadways..
Where will they keep the bike??
Do they stock at some place in Delhi from where we can collect..
Basically we ll be going by flight from Mumbai to Delhi on 28th May so we ll reach Delhi Airport on Sat 28th May around 1pm.
So from where can we collect the bikes?
Also do can they manage return of bikes too? Say from Delhi to Mumbai

Had a contact in TCI ( Transport corporation of India ) which is the parent company for GATI, XPS and Transystem logistics. As per the source the goods are packed and loaded into a truck or tempo in front of you and the vehicles leaves. But then there is a crossing done in between or destination to a different truck or tempo for transporting your goods to the required destination. This is the time when the bike gets damaged. The loaders never care for the goods even if glass is written on them and you wont get much out of it through insurance as well. If the truck on to which the bike is loaded is going straight to your destination then the chances of damage are very less.
Same is the case with trains as well. If a train like Rajdhani is is carrying your bike then the chances of opening the luggage compartment is is less frequent. But in a normal train the luggage compartment is opened and loaded/unloaded with goods at many stations. Care has to be taken when packing and loading of the bike at the source station for better shipment.

Deepan

I had transported my Yamaha Fazer twice, once using railways from Bhopal to Mumbai, it did cost less but the damage was unrepairable, they placed sideways on another bike :O (neither on side/center stand), result : when unloading the bike, the right side panel covering the air filter broke into several pieces, even though the bike was packed well, and this happened in front my eyes :O
The second time this bike was transported from Mumbai to Bangalore via GATI. It was a complete hassle free experience, I wasnt even present in Mumbai to get the bike loaded (My parents got it loaded, both my parent have never ridden nor have transported a two wheeler ever in their life). They came home, loaded the bike in a Tempo, bike was packed at their warehouse (an additional Rs. 600 /- was charged), and it was delivered in one piece in Bangalore.
I know the guys really well at the Gati, Whitefield Branch as the Fazer had some issues on delivery, and I had to get a mechanic to the warehouse to fill fuel in the tank as the Fuel Cap lock had got rusted and wasnt opening (Thanks to Mumbai's weather)
Moreover, if you plan to travel by Air till Delhi and save on a day or two, GATI/Packers or Movers is a better option as the bike can be left at the warehouse for a day or two without any fear, I wouldnt recommend the same with the Railways (they just dont care)
Also GATI agreed to allocate a separate area if there were 3 - 4 bikes being transported together.
But yes Rajdhani is a good option, anyone ready to try ?

Even I am planning for a Leh trip from Delhi somewhere around june first week. I will be joined by a friend from Bangalore who will transport his bike to Delhi first and then ride along with me. Let me know if anyone else is also planning to leave from Delhi around that time.
Here are my experinces of transporting the bike....
2005 : Transported Caliber Croma from Delhi to Chennai. Its the cheapest mode of transport (Spent around 1300 bucks) but certainly not the hassle free mode. You may have to take you bike to the station. You will find few guys who will pack the bike for 200 bucks or so. Also if you have the tickets of the train, you can ask them to load it in the same train.
So my advice, buy an unreserved ticket. Show it to them and get it loaded in front of you. Its one of the fastest mode as well. You bike will surely reach in couple of days. Its relatively hassle free to go and collect it from the destination railway station.
No damage
2007 : Transported Caliber Croma back from Chennai to Delhi. Everything was similar to 2005 except I had to grease few palms (Spent about Rs 2200 in total )
No Damage
2009 : Transported my one year old Pulsar 200 from Delhi to Bangalore by Aggarwal packers and Movers. They seemed to be the best albeit most expensive service provider. Door to door delivery including the packing. This time my comapny was paying, so did not really bother about the money :P but it costed around Rs 4800. Gati was doing it for 2600 excluding packing and door to door. Another vendor (Dont remember the name now) said that they will send a guy who will drive my bike to their warehouse and then they willl pack it. I straightaway asked them to F.O.
All in all the experience was pretty comfortable. Delivered in 10 days.
No Damage
2010 : By now i had good confidence that bikes get transported damage free. Started ridiculing guys who say that bike gets damaged during transit. And then it hit me. Transported my bike back from Bangalore to Delhi through Aggarwal packers. Got it unloaded in Delhi in front of me and Voila.... It had got a huge dent in petrol tank. Moreover bike wont start. Drained my battery trying to get it started. Had a harrowing time running after insurance company, Aggarwal packers, Baja showroom to get my bike repaired.
It still does not give the same feel as it used to do in pre accident era. But now I have learned to live with it.
Moral of the story is : A lot depends on luck whichever mode you send your bike through, whether its rail or road.

I wish you all the best for this epic journey. Please make sure the Manali route is open. They open quite late and the status of the Manali road on the Leh official website still shows closed. The Srinagar route is open at this time.Originally posted by n_sandy View Posti'll start from Jaipur on 27th Morning
