I wish you all the best for this epic journey. Please make sure the Manali route is open. They open quite late and the status of the Manali road on the Leh official website still shows closed. The Srinagar route is open at this time.

What is your ride? just curious.

hey people, planning to go to leh this june (via manali).

The problem is that I won't be shipping my bike. I'll have to rent a bike from manali. Have anybody else done this?
I have read the "how to get leh'd" issue and I'm scared that the rented bike will be in the proper condition that it has to be in.
Is there any place which rents out bike to tourists just for this and if so, how much would it cost?


Are there any groups that would reach manali on the 9th?
I'm planning of dates from the 9th to the 17th. As i have a train to catch from New Delhi on the 18th.

And all other fellow riders going to leh this year, have an amazing time!!!

We are going to Ladakh starting from Mumbai in June. Anyone interested can join us. Will be carrying the bike in train till Kalka. We are 2 guys

18th June : Leave Mumbai (1135 hrs) (Paschim Express) - Tickets Booked
19th June : Reach Kalka (1600 hrs) - Unload Bikes - Overnight stay
20th June : Kalka - Manali - 279 Km
21st June : Manali (Stay) (Avoid if you can since you will be reaching Leh on Saturday, spend a day in Manali while coming backmy advise try to cover Diskit-Hunder too).
27th June : Leh-Karu-Chang La-Pangong Tso - 175 kms
28th June : Pangong Tso (Stay) (unnecessary i feel, but do as you want to do)
29th June : Pangong Tso - Karu - 129 km
30th June : Karu - Sarchu - 211 km
1st July : Sarchu - Manali - 230 km
2nd July : Manali - Kalka - 279 km
3rd July : Leave Kalka (1030 hrs) (Paschim Express) - Tickets Booked

I was all set to leave on 21st of May with this friend of mine but he couldn't seek permission (I thought that wouldn't be a problem!). So I intended to do this trip solo. But after some thinking and respecting almost everyone's advice against going solo as it'll be the first time I'll be getting Leh'd, I'd like to join you guys as our route is very similar except that I was going to take the Manali - Srinagar route and spend a few days at any interesting place/village on the way.

One major obstacle now is that I want to get the bike transferred in my name before leaving and now it looks like I'll be getting the papers only by 23rd or 24th though the agent will be confirming it by today evening else I'll have to cancel my tickets for tomorrow. Also I'll be there in Thane tomorrow to attend a friends wedding and if you don't mind maybe we can meetup tomorrow!

I have heard that the Manali-Leh route is closed for the next 40-45 days. Is that true?
Also if this is the case, will passes like Baralach La be closed.
I am afraid if this happens we will miss Spiti.

Chandigarh to Leh and back in 9 days. Possible?

Hi guys. I have been following this forum for quite sometime and am absolutely hooked to it. Inspired by the feats of xbhpians I and a friend of mine both from Chandigarh are thinking of doing a Leh Ladakh trip. I have read a lot of travelogues and itineraries and almost in all cases it involves minimum of 2 weeks and 3 weekends. Since we would be starting from Chandigarh itself would it be possible to plan something which can be accomplished in 2 weekends and one week in between? I mean if we restrict the places we visit would it be possible to visit Leh Ladakh and return back to Chandigarh? Or is it next to impossible. Any comments appreciated.

Late! Had I known the closing dates, I'd have applied earlier... Hope its not a preference thing Just joking. Anyway on a serious note, the paperwork is sorted, will be sending the bike tomorrow to Delhi via train and I shall reach Delhi by 11:30 PM today (21st May). Will be spending a couple of days there (catchup with friends, Taj, etc) and shall begin the journey solo by 24th or max by 25th of May.

Day 1: Chandigarh - Sarchu (Presuming you ride regularly since you live close to the hills, once in 6 months to "higher altitudes" and would not need acclimatisation)

Day2: Sarchu - Leh

Day3: Permits

Day 4: Leh - Pangong - Leh

Day 5: Leh - Nubra - Leh

Day 6 Leh - Sarchu

Day 7 Sarchu - Chandigarh.

And you still have a couple of days buffer. Which you may need.

You would need acclimatization, since you are going from ~600ft to 14000ft in one go.

2 weekends and a week in between means you have nine days. So break the Sarchu - Chandigarh journey in two days

When are you planning to go? In June Chd-Sarchu can take anywhere between 18-20 hrs.

@Ken cool: Firstly thanks for you response. So it is possible afterall. Great. Regarding your question, even though we live near the hills I wouldn't think we are acclimatized to high altitudes. We have done a few rides till now but quite short as compared to Leh. (Chandigarh to Shimla and back and to nearby places like morni hills etc.) so I wouldn't consider ourselves "used" to high altitudes (Shimla is not that high I think). Should this be a major consideration?

2011 Leh/Spiti [Planning & Discussion thread]

@Kurt rules: we have 2 options. Either July end or August end/Early September. Which one would be preferable? Although we would be doing a few more rides before taking on the Ladakh trip( possible to Manali and back) but I am not sure if that would prepare us enough for Leh. Ken's message has atleast given us hope of doing this trip as atleast for my friend taking 2 weeks off is impossible. Can the plan be modified to make it easy to acclimatize?
