Anyway, anyone else planning from Hyderabad??
select June , its good time , you might get to see lot of snow , july you might see barely snow and its too hot [trust me]

Renting an unknown bike for a trip like Leh is not a good idea.
If you want to ride from Chennai itself, you can also do that. But if thats too much, transport the bike till Jammu/Delhi and ride from there.
Last year in July i went for 12 days , started from Chandighar and ended in Chandighar , full circle below points might help you guys :

    1. plan with plenty of buffers time [days] else you will be in trouble
    2. we planned for 12 days and its not at all enough to cover all places , [mainly around leh like Nubra/Pnagong]
    3. don't rent bike there else u might end of loosing time , as 5 in 10 bikes will stall/brakedown
    4. use GATI for transporting your bike to and from places where u start , they pack well and timing is good
    5. due to our less days , i had to ride Nubra and Pangong lake in mid night in those non-existance roads , although it is fun in riding at night, so plan well and cover only possible places instead of covering all like us.
    6. Don;t miss the kargil side ride , its beautiful like places around Leh
    7. drink lot of liquid and avoid alcohal/smoke
    8. best to start from Chandighar and end at Srinagar
    9. Srinagar to Jummy highway is worst traffic with lot of lorries/trucks , its waste to ride there one can't enjoy with that much of traffic.
    10. finally spend as much time as possible on the way to leh from manali and around Leh , everything is there only.
    11. there is one more lake tsomuri something like that, if possible plan very well for that as its around 300+ km distance
    12. These bikes will work fine without problem: - P150, unicorn, R15 [avenger had lot of problem in controlling there due to its design]

About the two bold dates, wouldn't they be long to be covered in a single day ?

                    also keep 2-3 buffer days.

                    Ride safe and have fun.

Have thought of stretching a bit in between areas as a little short of days for the entire trip. Have kept in mind a buffer of 2 days for now..if leave permits will reschedule these days. But is it like it just can't be done?

Jaipur-Manali as i said above, will be trying to stretch..shall pull over somewher in between if it becomes too much. But about the leh one's, dont they seem alright. They dont seem to be that far km wise..

I know am squeezing the days but I dont want to shelve the trip because of lack of days. May be i will skip one or two places here and there but in a nutshell i have with me 15+2 days for now. Going via Delhi is an option but i dont want to do that till the time this plan more or less seems doable. What say?

Thanks a lot guys and please keep the tips coming.

[MENTION=68114]seeker[/MENTION] : Km wise they might look easy, but add some more factors to it, like average speed of max 40kmph, crossing nallas would add more time, then u need to stop for directions/water/food/butt break/clicking. So plan accordingly.

                            Cheers!
                            Some suggestions from my side
                            1) Can you do your trip the other way round, I mean climb from Srinagar -> Kargil -> Leh and come down from LEh->Manali->Delhi. Advantages -> easy acclimatization both for you and your bike and many people underestimate AMS until they are hit.

                            2) If you do this avoid the Independence day and +/- 5 days in Kashmir. Reason -> Your safety and the security check thickens, so may be annoying for alien looking bikers with different registration plates.

                            3) Any particular reason why you want to travel all the way from Mumbai - Leh and back and that too with time constraints.
Please understand that I am not discouraging you but you will exert yourself a lot before even touching Leh so there may be some eventualities. This is both for you and your bike. Also there is no point visiting places like a truck driver if you want to enjoy the beauty of places that you planned.
You can put your bike on Train/Gati and come on flight to Delhi/Chandigarh/Jammu/Srinagar and save at-least 3 days (+3days boarding/lodging/petrol)

4)AFAIK I would ideally ask you to start from Sept and continue so that you get less crowd meaning more avenues to bargain and faster arrivals. Sept is the best time since the roads are usually at its best since BRO gets enough time from the years beginning but on the flip side snow is lesser (which is also a blessing if you think in other way)

16/08/2014 Jaipur-Manali -> to much exertion as I already told but your wish ...
18/08/2014 Sarchu - Tso Kar -> Tso Kar has very limited places to Stay . I would suggest you to go to Sumdo or if possible Tso Moriri ( Korzok) but that would be too much since you would be starting from Manali just the previous day so your call... Tso Moriri in many ways is better than Tso Pangyong but the last 20-25kms has completely nothing (not even roads) and be careful to not reach Chumur ... Sumdo has local petrol too.
Next day you can come through Chumathang -> Keylong-Leh Road -> Karu

                            21/08/2014 Leh - Pangong Lake - Leh
-> Can be done but why not stay overnight and enjoy the Lake .Cheaper stays & food in Spangmik(5-8kms from Lukung) .

                            also keep 2-3 buffer days.
                            I fully agree ...

The summer in the norther region is extremely hot. Doing Mumbai to Manali in august is a REALLY bad idea.
best is to follow what is mentioned by our good member.

                              Ride safe and have fun.

Manali to Sarchu might be too much for a day considering you have to cross both Rohtang and Baralach la in a single day.. Assuming you do Jaipur-Manali stretch the previous day, starting early next morning might be difficult.. My Rohtang experience was loads of traffic, slushy bad roads.. It took us a lot of time to cross Rohtang even though we started really early in the morning.. Baralach la is beautiful and i'd recommend not to rush through it.. Baralach la also has a few water crossings which might be little tougher in the evening..
Once you start descending Rohtang, there WILL be loads of breaks for photos..

Manali-Leh route offers most of the scenic beauty of the entire ride.. Take as much time as possible for this part, you won't regret..

All the best for you ride..
