My issue was only with The gear part. I was always ok with everything else. The rest would stand Irrespective of whether you knit yourself in leather or ride stark naked.Originally posted by satyenpoojary View PostAlways assume the other guy will mess up - Ride Defensively!

I didn't advise anything to anyone. I just stated my personal opinion.Originally posted by trustvishwas View PostAt least I don't advise people about what my definition of basic riding gear is.
Often people learn more by seeing than reading.
Cost of buying knee guard and repairing/replacing tank will be more than a riding pant. Hence, I waited to find a riding pant (for the uninitiated, I have been searching for one since 2010 - though I didn't visit the shops on a daily basis) and recently bought one.Originally posted by shrinathrao View PostIn fact, this reply of you comes as a surprise at least to me, since you are a very senior member than majority of us and me and many others know that you have more kilometers riding experience than many of us.
All i can say is this if the tank paint gets spoiled you can always re paint or get stickering job as that would be much cheaper in case of any fatal injury to the knee.
Worst scenario replace the tank cover saar.
How many people you know who have fallen/crashed and have hurt their knee so badly that they need some serious surgery & what kind of speeds they were doing and how the accident happen?
Wish if people could get influenced so much by just reading.Originally posted by shrinathrao View PostAs this reply of yours can really make things bad for many newbies and they know knee guards are compulsion and a major protocol in our pune chapter, they are waiting to join us for rides but are kept aside for not having gears, will use this reply of yours as excuse and cross question back.
So you see the consequences can be really bad for them.
@NV: Don't you think that in the basic riding gear, the riding jacket should be optional instead a decent jacket (leather / thick material) with elbow guard be enough? Just like the knee guard are min required, instead of riding pant.
PS: Let me know if this is not the right place to discuss such stuff. Can wait till the next meeting to happen.

Just something I have observed with people close to me who have had accidents on their bikes. In an accident the most prone parts in the knee are ligaments. I know 3 people who lost their ligaments due to an accident. One friend whose bike slipped. He was on an Activa doing speeds not more than 60kmph. Lost ligaments in both his knees. My sister who was riding a Hero honda street also had her left knee ligament tear in an accident. A car in front of her dodged a huge pothole and went over it. She couldn't see it until the last moment. My cousin in Delhi lost ligaments in his right knee in an accident. He was on the highway doing speeds of 80kmph on a Pulsar 150 Classic. A couple of dogs ran right in the middle of the road and he hit one of them and fell down. All of them needed surgery to remove the ligaments. And luckily there was no other injury to any of them. Cost of surgery is around 35k in a medium sized hospital.Originally posted by nav75 View PostHow many people you know who have fallen/crashed and have hurt their knee so badly that they need some serious surgery & what kind of speeds they were doing and how the accident happen?
Also weak ligaments can be hereditary. More so reason to wear knee guards if you have a history in the family. People whose age is nearing 40 or more are more prone to ligament tear. I think the bionic knee guards which extend to your shin bone will be more useful in protecting your knee ligaments since they can prevent sudden twisting and turning of the leg if strapped properly.Last edited by Viper1089; 03-23-2012, 10:52 AM.Very True- "Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. The first page of our Pune thread outlines the same. You can have a leather jacket provided you wear armor inside. A riding jacket is much more safe in terms of abrasion resistance. Where normal leather jackets would be torn to shreds due to abrasion, the cordura fabric is tolerant and resistant to abrasion.Originally posted by nav75 View Post@NV: Don't you think that in the basic riding gear, the riding jacket should be optional instead a decent jacket (leather / thick material) with elbow guard be enough? There is nothing like a proper place and improper place. Anyone can put forth his opinions on topics that might help fellow bikers.Originally posted by nav75 View PostPS: Let me know if this is not the right place to discuss such stuff. Can wait till the next meeting to happen.
You have a PM.
+1, true that. Ligament damage is something that stays for years. I am not sure on how knee guards can prevent ligament tear/damage as ligament damage is mostly experienced when the joints stretch beyond their natural stretch limits. However, all said and done, knee guards will still save your skin, knee cap and will also absorb a large part of the impact.Originally posted by Viper1089 View PostJust something I have observed with people close to me who have had accidents on their bikes. @NV Why I feel that the bionic knee guards will help is because they extend to the shinbone & a luttle above your knee and they can restrict the movement from your knee joint to some extent. All the above accidents I mentioned had a common factor in them -twisting of the knee joint which as you said rightly stretched the ligaments beyond their capability. Agreed its not a fool proof safe but who knows it just might do for someone in a situation.Last edited by Viper1089; 03-23-2012, 11:10 AM.Very True- "Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. You may be right. All this points to usage of the knee guard. As long as people wear them, we are happyOriginally posted by Viper1089 View Post@NV Why I feel that the bionic knee guards will help is because they extend to the shinbone & a luttle above your knee and they can restrict the movement from your knee joint to some extent. Nice clicks ?
They were possible because of this
A very good and safe biker not only because he can pop up either of the wheels, scrape his knees on a corner or go fast and make it look stylish but because he very well knows his limits and capabilities and has the patience to learn about others and ride safe ! :)

Recalling the gear debate
Hello friends,
I have been reading about the riding gear debate. Pretty lively with pertinent issues from both sides of the knee guards! My small inputs are thus:
1. Helmet: Non-issue. I wear it for an errand to get even a packet of milk. CROSS, two numbers, one in Pune, the other in Rajkot.
2. Jacket: For longer rides on highways e.g. Rajkot to Ahmedabad/Junagadh/ Bhuj etc. One in Rajkot, SCOYCO. I am usually in Rajkot on Sundays so am not able to join in the group rides so do one on my own as a breakfast trip.
3. Gloves. Ditto point 2
4. Riding trousers. I don't have one but make do with thick jeans on long rides. It is not a correct replacement, I know, but see point 5 below.
5. Knee guards. My main problem. I have had two surgeries on my right knee for football injuries at the Indian Military Academy back in 1991. If I wear the stiff bionic ones on long rides, my knee swells up and aches like mad. So, I have got the softer ones by Cramster, based upon my knowledge that in motorcycle accidents, the knees are the least at risk - the head, shoulder blade, arm, forearm, fingers and spine are most at risk. For me, the knee guards are to prevent an impact injury on the patella and not for ligament injuries; nothing short of a rigid steel brace, rivetted INTERNALLY to the femur and tibiofibula and keeping the whole leg straight, will stop a ligament injury (the words of my orthopaedic surgeon, himself a footballer). Ligament injuries are most common, in order of max risk, football/basketball, skiing, hang gliding/para sailing etc (ACL) and Formula 1/other 4 wheeler sports (PCL). The ACL and PCL stand for Anterior and Posterior Cruciate Ligament, respectively.
6. Boots. I use sneakers for the milk run and my Army ones (older pair) for long rides.
In my personal opinion, the present gear mandates for the Pune chapter are correct. Any dilution in the standards will not be in the interests of working towards the objectives of the xBhp forum at large. Individuals by themselves can afford the liberty of being cavalier in their approach towards safety. But in a formal group, they must adhere to the norms of the group else go maverick, on their own and thereby, bereft themselves of the benefits of participation with like-minded people, gaining information, knowledge and wisdom.
