Its a good place for lizards and insects to sleep

I slept in between the rocks seen in the pic next to the helmet..

Early morning quickly wore the helmet and rode the bike for about 5-10mins...i constantly could feel something moving inside my helmet..but thought it must be the cap of the offroading helmet moving..

Got off the bike and removed the helmet only to find this

Moral is never sleep in crevices where creatures are supposed to sleep and if you do...even if you dont check your baggage..make sure you check your helmet first !
    nin,

You are extremely lucky, extremely so. This part of Maharashtra is indigenous to the saw scaled viper and the common krait, two f the most poisonous snakes in the world. The krait especially is aggressive, foul tempered and bites at the slightest perceived provocation. Its venom is so toxic that it almost dissolves skin and bone. Had it been any of these two beauties, you would have been a stiff within 10 minutes flat. And the place where you slept is the most favourite spot for these guys. I am surprised that you did not exert some basic care when out in the bush...

Your fotos bring back the fondest memories of my camps in the National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy and long range patrols in the Northeast. No dearth of snakes, scorpions, lizards, leeches etc. But we used to undertake one simple drill - beat the ground around for some time, flatten the bushes and keep away from crevices in rocks. Spread some kerosene/diesel around - the smell puts off the snakes. Shake all boots hard, beat them on the ground well before putting one's foot inside - standard drill in Rajasthan (boots are No 1 favourite bed time spots for scorpions)

Perhaps the vibrations from the bikes and your feet dispersed the snakes this time. Next time, you may not be so lucky.

    Take care.

These are some really nice tactics and pieces of advice for anyone going for off-roading/camping.
Hope we do not come across such incidents but precautions can save the day.

@ASSASSIN07: I have a Xena XN15 lock. Had it shipped from the states through a friend. Has been working well without any issues... Build quality is good; the alarm noise is ear-piercing to say the least!!

An extremely good tactic it is. Had learnt it long back when was in NCC during college years. Glad you mentioned it, brings back the old memories

                  • @ niks - i had done upgrade of my R15 headlight to HID setup but since the reflector of R15 are not good to support the spread unless you have projector which costs more 3k which navnish quoted me as i was using his hid setup. so if you have good reflector which will support the HID than you are lucky or be ready to spend more money for projectors. The other way round is you can put a higher wattage bulb and see with a cutoff.

@ shaswat - - check skoyco light weight city ride jackets.contact baljit kochar who is the lead rider for road shakers as i believe he has some fresh stock of jackets.

@icemang - the diesel smell worked for me many times in goa, as i learnt this technique during my college time when we used to go for camping, as i remember i used to carry a can of diesel or petrol and just put 100 ml of petrol and keep the lid open after sprinkling petrol in the surrounding areas, and yes there was no issue of scorpion or snakes in our camping site. even it keeps lizards away too.

                        Shri,

That is good to know. Only, petrol being manifold more volatile is not as effective as the other two. Kerosene is a beautiful stinker> diesel lesser so> petrol hardly so. All forms of wildlife positively just HATE the smell of kerosene and the damn thing just lingers and lingers and lingers so good for us campers.

                        • Leh ride simulation

                          Hello guys,

You would know that I am planning a trip to Leh from 9 June till 28 June. Three chaps from Mumbai and I are the core team. We would like to have one team ride prior to the main trip so that issues like riding styles, group dynamics etc are sorted out.

I would be grateful if any of you were to recommend a suitable route in and around Pune/Mumbai which will simulate the road conditions of the Jammu - Leh - Manali circuit as accurately as possible.

We plan to do this ride on the whole day of 29 April so there is a slight urgency in asking for your replies.

                          Thanks.

none can simulate -- but an experience at rajmachi would be helpful
try out the medium to hard sections on the same route 2-3 times & you are set
Also feel free without tension --there are a lot many without any kind of offroad experience still do Leh successfully

As DK said, Rajmachi would be good. But, even if you don't have have the Rajmachi experience then also it'll be good..not a problem. I for one, didn't go to Rajmachi...but did my Leh ride successfully.

Secondly, if you want to try out the riding styles etc..then head out to highways and ghats for practice runs to check if the riding speeds match over there..

Tail Baila is also a good venue for such practice runs. At last weekend's ride, I overheard people saying that it reminded them of Ladakh. Though I am not sure myself since I have never been to Ladakh.
