    • i have been riding for 8 years and i got my license only in this year (2009)!!
and all the years, i have never been stopped even one single time!!
the funny thing is, after i got my license in april this year, i was coming back home after picking up DL from the rto, i got stopped !!! considered myself very lucky! after that i have been stopped 3 times!
another funny incident when i was in school. i was going to a movie doing triples on my kinetic Honda without helmet and a cop suddenly jumps on the road and sticks his helmet right in front of my face (it was about 3 meters away) i ducked and missed the helmet. thanks to my friend's instant reaction, he covered the number plate with his feet. and we escaped and no challans came home!

      • Never!!

While i was in Delhi i used to drive car. There not even stopped for documents check. No challans for any thing. Always maintained the necessary speed limits wherever roads were specified with and where there were no limits specified by the police i maintained the limits of my car
Once i moved to bangalore after my placement, i ride bike and here also never challaned though stopped umpteen times for document check. I always make a point to carry all the necessary documents and helmet with me no matter wherever i'm going. Be it near or far helmet is always with me covering my skull!!
I've driven car also here sometimes.
This one incident happened when i rode my friend's car here for the first time. Here in Bangalore seat belts are not manadatory i think. The moment i sat in the driver's seat i pulled the seat belt and wore it. To which my friend gave a laugh but its my habit since my driving in delhi where its mandatory.
        My thoughts...

          • I got chalanned twice, both for riding without license and was once warned to wear helmet.

            1. I was 15 riding with my friend in Kinetic Honda on NH-47, it was last week of March and the Highway Police were stopping almost all vehicles passing by. Didn't had license, had to pay Rs. 500/-

            2. Was 17, riding a H.H. Splendor since it was Sunday but was stopped by Vehicle Inspection Dept, didn't even give a chance to bribe, again had to pay 500/-.

I took license next week after turning 18 and after that no one had ever stopped me what an irony.

              • Yesterday afternoon, on the inner ring road the (ejipura) signal turned green and my R15 got flagged down immediately after the signal (i was in the first row).

First thing the cop asks "where are you going??" I said Airport road, near manipal hospital, and he says "please give me a lift till the flyover."

Nice guy, actually said "please". I dropped him off and also answered his queries on the bike!!

                Cheers,

                • I was caught twice.
                  1. Pillion was without helmet. Paid 100 Rs got 70 Rs back ().
                  2. Took a U-Turn where it was clearly mentioned no U-Turn. Paid 200 Rs. 100 for U-Turn and 100 for Fancy Number Plate (Whereas it was not fancy tried explaining him a lot). Later on came to know that actual fine was total 200 Rs. Didn't knew about the fine amounts.
Started keeping printout of the offences and the corresponding fine so that no bugger would lie to me.

you must be really proud of yourself.

some of those bribes you paid are actually higher
than the fines you were required to pay.

                        • Stopped for routine checks: N no. of times
Been in any problem : Twice
                          Challaned: Never
                          Bribes : Nope

Situation 1 : Started riding 2 wheelers last year, was on my old, rusty and trusty kinetic honda and on my way to my tuition class at 6:30 in the morning. Was wearing a helmet (thanks to xbhp) and gloves but a cop decides to stop me. I didn't have ANY papers, actually the kinetic honda belonged to my father and the RC and Insurance was long lost, and naturally didn't have my pollution certificate. Did not have a licence as didn't knew how to ride a geared 2 wheeler back then . Cop asked for RC and Licence to which I sheepishly admitted 'ki nhi hai Translation : Don't have'. He said that the vehicle would be impounded, I replied "Do as you wish, Maybe then I'd get a bike " Cop said "You'd have to come to the Police station" I said "Uncle, please leave me with a warning, I won't drive without having papers from now on. I have a tuition class in 30 minutes and I've woken up at 5:00 for it. Forgot the papers at home in the rush." He let me go.

Situation 2 : I was coming back after getting the first service of my R15 done. The traffic light was green for straight going traffic but not for the right turn. There were many bikes and cars standing for the green light for right turn to come on at the intersection. I thought that my route is clear and that I could go ahead. I crossed the intersection with 2 secs on the timer and got pulled over for jumping the light. I was wearing my helmet, but had forgot my licence at my house as I had just a learner's licence and I had gone to get a permanent one that morning only but failed the test so the learner's licence was stapled to the other documents in my backpack at my house. I showed the cop the insurance cover note and the road tax receipt and the bike's purchase bill.

Cop:" 3 hafte ho gye hain RC nhi lekr aaya?? meri bike ki toh 3 din mein aa gyi thi" Translation " It's been 3 weeks, and you still havn't gotten your RC?? My bike's RC came within 3 days"

I:"Uncle it is not my fault, Dealer did not get it for me"

Cop: It is not the responcibility of the dealer to get it for you. You have to get it yourself.

I: Uncle I will get it today itself.

Cop: I'll charge you 100 for not having licence, 1000 for jumping red light, and the bike will be taken to the police station as you dont have any papers.

I thought that the running in hasn't even been completed of my bike, What If he ripps my bike??

I: Uncle I did not jump the red light, I passed when it was still green.

He: The others were waiting. Were they waiting coz they are fools?

I: They were waiting for the right turn.

He: No they weren't and you've jumped the red light.

Now I was really panicking thinking about He will ripp my new bike , So I called my friend who has been riding since 13 and has been through these kinda situation numerous times. Gave the phone to the cop.

2 mminutes later the cop said : your friend says to impound the bike

I was like , took the phone and disconnected.

Now I called up a friend who lives close to my house and asked him to get my licence. He did not pick up .

Then an idea struck my mind, my cousin mama had been to our house a couple of days back and he was in Delhi police, Called my mother to get his no. and called him.

Gave the cop the fone and 2 mins later he lets me go after giving me a warning that I should get my RC today itself.

I just went off thanking my mama . Called him after reaching home and thanked him again.

Apart from this, no challans, and no bribes. I take my helmet with me everytime, barring when I go to get a haircut (salloon is pretty close by, can walk there also but the walk back home becomes really uncomfortable with all those tiny hair pricking at the neck so havta ride there). I do value the Rs100 note as petrol ain't getting any cheaper
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.
