I never thought I'd be the one to wake up at 5am to hit the gym.
I was right. :P

All non sense talks, its how you incorporate crunches and its types. And I am sure that it will do the job.
And if walking/running/jogging would burn the fat, every single person we see in the neighborhood park would have flat stomach.
He is right. Crunches don't burn fat. One can do hundreds of crunches every day and they won't be able to reduce belly fat by just doing crunches. Crunches help strengthen our core and they make the abs more "visible". However, for abs to be visible, we first need to get rid of the excess fat from our belly and excess fat from around our belly can be reduced by doing HIIT. The long, slow cardio does not help much (and that's why, as you said, people walking/running/jogging everyday don't necessarily have flat stomach). Also, we can't reduce fat from specific spots of our bodies. People doing crunches and bending sidewards think that this will help them get rid of fat from only the stomach area but that does not happen. We just have to workout to lose the overall fat from the body and it is our body which decides from where the fat should reduce. The goal should be to drop overall fat from the body which will reduce belly fat too. To reduce overall body fat, HIIT is best.

hss : If this was the case, I would have never lost 20kgs. I never went for HIIT, even my running was limited too. And all the certified trainers would never keep crunches in their schedule. Its a big myth that it only strengthens the back/ core.

To each his own guys.
The body is a very complex machine and body type, lifestyle, childhood and many other things affect the biology of the human body. If prateek2210 says he's been able to reduce weight with just crunches I can't disagree, cos it's not impossible, while what hss says works best for me.
Gym instructors are like mechanics. They suggest and do what they feel is the best for the body(bike), based upon their experience, while we are the ones who personally know what is working for our body and bike
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

This is a great thread. Had no idea of its existence. Have been a gym buff for quite some time now, leaned out and gained and leaned out again. It is fun.
I see the discussion is around HIIT.
Well HIIT is a great tool to burn fat. I see many people trudging on the treadmills in the gym. A better way to do the treadmill is to go the HIIT way. It is simple - Run for 2 mins and walk for 1 min. Repeat it 5 times and you would be done.
If you do not have access to a tread mil, find a four floored building (great if you live in one). Go all the way up and come down using the stairs. Repeat 5 times and your cardio is done.

I believe Bodybuilding is like any other sport where you should be willing to learn and unlearn!
There is no better therapy than riding a bike down a straight road at full throttle with the sound of the engine for company.

I didn't mean to say that crunches are useless and I also didn't mean to say that HIIT is the only way to lose fat. As R-Series also said, everyone's body reacts differently to different workouts. You must have done something else right which helped you lose 20 kilos. I don't think if you had done only crunches, then that would have given you same results. From whatever information I have been able to gather over internet, I believe HIIT gives you lot more in lot less time when it comes to losing overall body fat.

One side you are saying that every body suits different exercise. And then you say HIIT is best.
My exercise for tummy fat was only crunches, leg raises but with different ways and weights too.

What I meant was that same workout may give different results to different people. But still, if one were to generalise as we do with everything, HIIT is better than long, slow cardio.

One thing that I missed was discussing Gym Wear.

This came into my mind when today I saw some kids in my gym, wearing jeans and sandals.

Loose tee and track pants are best for gyms , followed by good sports shoes with enough grip.

Those who are in weights should use supporter, wrist band, gloves as a mandatory wear for gyms.

Hey, what exactly is the use of supporter (although I do use it)? I have never across any international article or video which talks about wearing supporter in gym (or saying that it's a must for lifting weights like we say in India), so was wondering if it is something "India-specific". Internationally, it is known as jack-strap but still I could not find many references to it for gym wear. I do understand that it supports testicles but again, it's just that I have not heard about its use anywhere except here, so wanted to know more about it.

Jock Strap provides support to testicles while we bounce around
In short it keeps them in place , too much bouncing around will make them sore (dont laugh ) and as men we know a slight "here and there" in this case would be too painful.

Someone was giving me feedback about an App called 'Spartan System' being very good to help you with a good workout.

I haven't used it, but others who are interested might want to give it a try. It is available on Android.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Just downloaded it, looks good to me. Some screenshots.... Same as millitary training, again quite tough for new entrants. Food schedule looks good though. Only if we could get everything here.

Other than Whey protein and Creatine, are there any other supplements which should be consumed when you are into lifting heavy weights? I have seen people taking Glutamine, multi vitamin tablets etc

I lost 16 kgs within 8 months just by doing weights and a moderate 15 mins of cardio with a proper diet of no alcohol, oily/fried food, bakery/junk items..
Also another major reason (completely OT here ) that made me lose weight was that I had a bad breakup.
I used to weigh 95 kgs before, and now I'm 79 kgs, 6'1".

This is the workout regime I followed.
Monday- Chest
Tuesday- Back
Wednesday- Shoulders
Thursday- Arms
