ODO currently reads 64500 Kms. The upper cone of older one was found broken. Could not take picture of that.

Had to open the engine for over 6times.

      1st time in June 2015 :
Became the owner at 1270kms and it had crack a at the bottom of right crank.Total cost 3900rs including oil change and labor. Had slight vibrations, more on right handle and on the tank from 4k rpm.Till 4k my Hunk feels like Honda Unicorn.

2nd and 3rd time in July : From here all the probs started......huhhhh.
Gave it to nearby svc for oil filter cleaning.Replaced the side cover gasket with Unicorn's as the svc didnt have any stock of gasket with them which costed 114rs compared to hero's 72rs.Following that service i rode around 300kms bike lost the punch and the engine became rough.Suddenly the ride quality of my old Passion felt infinite times better than this tractor of a bike Tick-tick sound was coming from the engine like loose tappets(i learned about tappets from this thread only) and cog wheels getting jammed like sounds were also coming.Went to a relative bro's home(he is having Unicorn and do all repairs by himself) adjusted the tappets with feeler gauge and then we found that oil was not pumping to the upper part.Drained the oil and opened the side cover, a bolt(dont know what it is called) of the oil pumping wheel was missing(About this missing part(bolt) i came to know only when i had to buy them a new oil pumping wheel from Honda spare shop which had this bolt and it was not there when i opened the engine the day before which means the idiot at svc didnt put it back after cleaning the oil filter and his name is Shakthivel). Refitted everything and the engine sounded like a tractor with the new valve clearances.
Next day took Hunk to SVC and the supervisor whom i knew from my days of Passion Pro understood the seriousness of the issue and did the complete work by himself and he had to lie to me that the pumping wheel was damaged and needs to be replaced.Costed around 240rs for the unicorn one's. I told him that i have no prob in spending for a new gasket to avoid a leakage in the future. He said it was fine.Bike was back to life still vibrations were present. All this time from 1270kms i was riding it in the recommended speeds.

4th time in October: Oil started leaking because of the worn out right side cover gasket, bike lost the pulling and huge drop in mileage dropped below 50 and before i was getting a healthy 56 -58kmpl.This time before hitting the SVC i compared the engine sound of my bike with that of my friend's new 3000km old Hunk. The sound of his bike was soothing to the ears and for the first time i rode Hunk/Xtreme which had little to no vibration between 4k to 5k rpm.His chain was so loose that i could hear it hitting the chain cover every third second. despite that the bike was pulling so good felt no loss in power at all. At this point i am desperate and sad-frustrated for buying an used bike.
Went to SVC, the supervisor friend replaced the side gasket and adjusted valves and clutch. He is a bit lazy but a nice guy, had to request him to make use of a feeler gauge though .The next day i checked the new setting extensively and found that pickup was back ,engine was reviving well but the sound was not as soft as my friend's Hunk. Couple of days later met him at svc and asked if the engine noise is from the rocker arm...or it may have developed a play because of running without proper lubrication for over 300kms some months before??!

5th,6th and 7th time in November: To my wonder spare of rocker arms was available with them and he agreed to change those for me in the warranty.Hitting the self start wont start the bike only "glitch-glitch" sound comes and to my wonder again spare of relay was also present!!
The supervisor friend gave my bike to a new mechanic and left as he was going out for some work.I could see this new mechanic idiot working on my bike from where i was sitting and sometimes standing impatiently anxious. In between i would go inside and have a chat with him in a friendly manner. All my fears turned out to be true, he is going to ruin my bike.He previously worked at Bajaj svc and joined Hero for better salary.I could feel it he was not doing anything properly. The worst was when he tried to rotate the fly wheel in clockwise.Told him in particular to adjust the valves only with a feeler gauge and waited outside.Few mins later he was going to fit the engine top cover, i rushed to him and asked did u adjusted the tappets with a feeler gauge or not??His reply was "he doesnt need one". Blood was rushing from my feet to head.Just because i asked for feeler gauge he did some timepass with it. I couldnt stand that anymore went outside and waited. He set the tappets tight and timing chain like noise was also coming i was not sure. The supervisor friend is leaving his job at SVC and starting his own workshop at a place 25km away from my home. Not going to S.R motors Nedumangad, TVM again.

Opened the engine at relative bro's home for adjusting the tappets.Unscrewed the top bolts, along with it the threads of camshaft holder also came out.Total disappointment
Adjusted tappets and closed headcover. Engine was rough, hard gear shifts and the top was leaking

Today morning checked in all major shops at TVM none of them had camshaft holder of HUNK.Bought the unicorn one's(800rs). Cleaned the new holder with engine oil and fitted it.While we were putting everything back spark plug got dropped from my hands and the tip hit the floor and bend. With a player adjusted it and put back.

      Doubts:
      1. Now the engine pull seems fine but there is a noticeable drag/lag when the throttle is twisted. Is that related to the spark plug or to the new camshaft holder??
      2. Do i need to follow a short run in period now that the holder is changed??
      3. From the beginning itself the engine sound is not as smooth my friend's and loose chain hitting the cover like sound comes from silencer while running .Its not like the the "tikkk tikkk..tikikk" sound when silencer cools. It seems the engine is getting hot very quickly not sure though. What could be the possible reasons??Reaches 49km/hr at 4k rpm.Compared to my friend's bike Engine feels stressed at 60km/hr
      4. Till now only Hero oil is used.Veedol is not available here. Motul 10w30 is available. Shell and Gulf also might be available. Which one to go for?? how is Honda oil??Day after tomorrow iam changing oil.

If it doesnt come good by the next oil change or another 1000kms i dont know what to do.Giving the bike to SVC without knowing someone there in person is like giving the bike for torture with consent.I will be forced to sell him if i fails to diagnose and rectify the issues which i dont want to happen (

All suggestions welcomed. Thanks for reading (:

I am extremely sorry bro as i had an exam so preparing fro same.

Now got time. Once again extremely sorry.

As for your problem, you messed up your sayings. You said you opened engine six times.

But actually your engine was opened once. All those clutch case opening and tappet cover opening are part of general service and doesn't constitute engine opening nor you can count one.

Also using unicorn gaskets has no problems as its the same, just price is almost double for the brand name. Else everything is same.

And that unicorn camshaft holder is same. Except that extreme ones would have cost RS. 636. Unicorn ones cost Rs. 800 obviously for brand name. No difference.

Now your questions and my answers:-

      Doubts:
      1. Now the engine pull seems fine but there is a noticeable drag/lag when the throttle is twisted. Is that related to the spark plug or to the new camshaft holder??

Check the timing of engine. While fitting the camshaft the timing sprocket would have been opened. The timing would have been missed. Get it re-set.
      2. Do i need to follow a short run in period now that the holder is changed??
No need. Get the timing checked. Also tappets adjustments.

Get the engine re-tuned. The mixture is not correct.
      4. Till now only Hero oil is used.Veedol is not available here. Motul 10w30 is available. Shell and Gulf also might be available. Which one to go for?? how is Honda oil??Day after tomorrow iam changing oil.

Use motul. But try to get veedol. Many are using and are immensely satisfied. i think all oil companies will sue me for decreasing their sales.

Mm.. but its annoying to open it every now and then.........Tappets are adjusted correctly. How to check timing of engine??We set the timing chain without any play.is that ok or i need to loose it ??

Finally succeeded in posting details about Head job done on my xtreme @ 62.4 K Kms!!

          I
purchased genuine valve set of Xtreme (Part No. 24K170S), which included valve seals as well. After my Mech opened the engine head, the new valves along with head were sent to lathe for grinding. In the meanwhile, Mech scrapped off the carbon deposit over Piston crown and cleaned the carburetor jets. Then he re-assembled the head with new valve set and seals and adjusted the tappets. I told him to apply anabond sealant between the head gasket and surface.

Now, my ride has become smooth again, and I feel that Power and pick-up has been restored
It has been around 2000 Kms since the Head job, and bike is running absolutely fine.
I am currently using Gulf 4T Synth engine oil, since it comes in 1L bottle.Click image for larger version

            Hi People,

I have been following xbhp since many months, applied few days ago & got approved just now. Read about tappet settings, de-carbonizing, timing, tuning and what not.

my big thanks & respect to Sibun, you are lifeline for all Xtreme/hunk/unicorn owners

Sibunji, I request your expertise in solving issue with my bike which is giving me sleepless nights

I have a second hand CBZ Xtreme 2009 model, (I love CBZ Xtreme a lot) and I always serviced it myself. But since a month ago I read tappet setting procedure on this forum, decided to do it.

Opened head cover, I set piston to TDC with 'T' mark, but the cam sprocket wheel was not aligned to head surface, its marking was not parallel, (my guess is previous owner mech messed it up & advanced the cam sprocket) So I manually adjusted the sprocket & chain to factory level (lines parallel to head surface at TDC, dot facing exhaust side) and then carried out a proper tappet setting procedure.

From then all my trouble started: Bike makes "kirr kirr" sound from inside the head, when engine hot. So I thought maybe due to advanced cam, rockers and all timing related items may be worn out/damaged.

So I bought new camshaft, rockers, timing chain, sprocket, chain guides, tensioner, and also new valves (with head work: lapping & compression test, new valve guides, from a reliable shop) & new oil pump. I properly installed all these myself painfully for 7 full day-nights.

But my problem of uneven "kirr kirr" sound isnt vanishing, I tried even more: changed ignition coil, spark plug & cap, checked all electric connections, recheck all installed components, checked oil flow to head, checked valve settings once again, cleaned carb, changed engine oil to brands/grades/quantity, did everything A-Z but Still no result, this left me deeply disappointed. I also heard from from crank case there is no noise from that area. Noise is only audible from head area.

I went to few mechs, they said crank bearing, piston rod, engine rebuild etc, but I am not satisfied with their answers. Also from this thread I read "ashwin.terminator" was facing almost same problems as mine in his Hunk engine, but replacing oil pump solved it for him. But not for me

Please help me out Sibun-ji! I will perform to all follow-ups u ask me to do.

            Thanks a lot!

            • Help me with 2007 CBZ Xtreme - Lower pickup+knocking+Valve noise when engine gets warm ( 5KM ride)

              Dear friends,

I have a 2007 CBZ Xtreme done 23000KMs, bought second hand. The bike used to sit for extended periods with the previous user, though it was regularly serviced and runs & handles pretty well. Used to get 50+ KMPL on highway runs.

Recently the bike has a lower pickup when the engine gets warm - after 5-6 KMS run. Also the valve tick tick noise also gets prominent, engine goes rough & I have to twist the throttle too much to get required acceleration.

In the morning It starts easy with choke, and has ample power till I ride 5 KM or so.

Kindly help me find a solution for this; I love the bike :-)

              Regards,

                  Hi mate,

Glad you love Cbz Xtreme. For your problem, Please do these:

                  1) Check engine oil level by removing dipstick, also please check the colour. If oil is completely black, please replace (Shell 10W40 AX7)

                  2) Tune your carburetor properly upto 2-3 turns from full close position.

                  2) For your tick- tick noise, please check/adjust/verify the tappet settings. http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/do-yours...nk-xtreme.html

Recently getting light "chik chik" type sound from the engine even after cold start.

                      This is not tappet noise.
Would really like to know what could be the cause? Rocker arm? Timing chain?

Please let me know, since SVC will try to say nothing happened, so that i can not claim warranty.

At 22,000 Km Odo, Timing chain apparatus most probably cannot wear out. Please check out play rocker arm bearings by opening the rocker cover. Also, check/verify valve settings.

Another culprit might be cam chain tensioner, which is prone to wear & Other culprits might be spark plug, loose wirings (especially ignition coil/spark plug area), gas leaks, insufficient oil supply to head region.

If possible, do upload a clear video/audio clip for better diagnosis.

Chik chik noise can be narrowed down to 3 things
                              1. Timing chain
                              2. Rocker bearing / rocker arm.
                              3. Cam chain tensioner

Rocker has a distinct tik tik noise similar to tappets, if you are 100% sure tappets are perfectly set then , as stated above 3 things needs to be checked out .
Most probably its tensioner or chain.

                              Regards,
                              Mahesh
Do these things in following order, it should take care of bike for a while.

                              0. Remove clutch side housing and clean filter mesh placed below . Chances are it never was cleaned.
                              1. Change oil to Veedol takeoff 4t 10w30 . I HEAVILY STRESS ON 10W30 1.2L ( 1.2L if clutch side removed ) , NO OTHER GRADE SHOULD BE USED , BRANDS MAY VARY.
                              2. Change air filter.
                              3. Clean and lube chain, set chain to correct slack i.e 1-1.5inch from tightest point.
                              4. Adjust cables to 5-10mm freeplay.
                              5. Change choke cable . Cable gets rusted or jammed over time and keeps choke engaged. This causes harm.
                              6. Adjust tappets to .07 inlet and .1 in exhaust, if in doubt refer this thread , it has a link to adjustment one. USE FEELER GAUGE ONLY.
                              7. Since you said suspension and handling is good , we leave that section for now.
                              8. Keep AFR at 1.75 -1.8 turns from closed position , one turn = 360 screw travel , many people take screwdriver turns for mistake , in that case it will be 3.6 turns of screwdriver.

Do this and lets see how it goes.
