  • Did a small 240 kms ride on SZ-R, from Pune - Bhimashankar - Pune.

Roads were not in great condition and not that worst too, patched up and at times small pot-holes. Rode SZ-R at high speeds on that road, constant between 70-100 kmph, it wasnt a highway, it is a road through the villages and hence less traffic , the bike responded really well! Front and rear shock-absorber did its job well.

Realized one of biggest drawbacks of TVS tyres, the biggest enemy of these tyres is mud, its impossible to control bike in mud due to less / no grip. On water is not that bad but not excellent too. Crossed 9000 kms mark on odo and checked the threads on tyres and they are intact, not worn at all, this can tell you the kind of 'hard compound' that has been used for these tyres.

Mileage was poor and it was expected as I was riding at high speeds all the time.

    Cheers!

    • hi people...this is my first post.

its been a month that i bought my first bike, yamaha sz r... and i am pretty contended with it. i have done about 900 km as of now and its been a week that got my first servicing done.

i really appreciate its looks and riding position. but i feel exactly the opposite about its tyres and i do face some problems with the gear box. I cant blame anyone for the gear box as i have learned how to ride on this same bike and it has taken some serious abuses from my end. the tyres are an open invitation for accidents on mud, two bad experiences already.

that brings to my question, the gear shifts are not smooth and i need to really press on it to budge, specially from the 3rd to the 4th. my rear wheel used to get locked big time when i wanted to shift up, but thankfully it has resolved after the servicing. at the same time i am haunted by locking up again specially as i am riding on the roads and on highways. the service person was adamant that the gear box is perfectly alright and even he took a ride to confirm the same. is there any suggestions from your end.

First of all welcome to xbhp, this thread is not that active sadly most of members of xbhp ignore it even though we post genuine query, but that shouldnt bother you from posting your experience and problems with your bike, we SZ-R/X owners would try and help you in best possible way.

As far as tyres are concerned, yes they are disappointing, you have learn your ways to tackle the situation. Ride slow on the muddy roads, partially wet roads but on complete wet roads they are not that bad.

Coming to gear shifts, I initially had similar problem shifting from 4th to 5th gear, it was real hard, after 2 services the issue slowly went away. Now its very smooth.

About locking wheel, can you please explain if the wheel locks when you hit the rear brake or when you shift up?

Some questions for you, are all gears hard or is it just 3rd to 4th? Did you check engine oil level?

        Keep posting your experience here.

        Cheers!

          thanks a lot for replying...

the problem of wheel locking went away with the 1st servicing. it was when i was shifting up and i was looking for some precautions regarding that.

as mentioned that i never rode or owned a bike before, i dont have much knowledge about it. would be great help if you can please explain how to check for the oil level in the gear box?

i am enjoying riding though... this sense of freedom is what i have never experienced before.

you can always refer to the manual to check the oil level in our bike....it is not on the side of the gear box its on the opp side and u need to open the screw and check the level....
Btw U seems to be a Bengali...are u from Kolkata?? if yes which showroom u took the bike and where do u service...

what about you... seems you are in love with your fazer.

Oil level can be checked with the help of dip stick which is on the right side near brake. If you want more info on it you can check manual.

Did you follow the running in instructions given in manual?

                Cheers!

                    HI Guys,

Have anyone of you seen the new advertisement of new Yamaha SZR which is aired during the on going india vs srilanka cricket series.
                    the new szr looks awesome.

the add is a very small one but believe me the looks are killer man.
i am not sure but looks like there is a mono suspension in the bike and full new design.looks little bit like FZ.

if anyone of you know about this please share your ideas....

I dont know how to react to this. But what I can say is, there is no bike which says "SZ-R" with mono-suspension.

Secondly SZ's facelift has been done months ago.

If you can clarify what it was that you saw, then it would be great.

                      Cheers!

                        Hi Lalit,

i am not sure how to explain you. but if you have seen the matches during the match there will be some commercials which were shown not during the breaks but during the overs. on the screen only that will appear. like some flash player sort of advertisement which will appear for a 5 secs or so then the screen will clear off.

in that i saw first there will be a curtain and then when it is lifted a cool looking bike appears with name as ,"YAMAHA SZR IN NEW AVATAR".

i am not sure if there was a MONO suspension but looked like it had as the add only lasts for 5-6 secs.

i was curious to know if any one have seen the add or not?

                            • I had been Lavasa again yesterday but this time with pillion, and to my luck the gear lever pin broke! Gears were functioning properly its just couldnt shift it properly, gear lever was feeling very free and like hanging.

Had to shift gears by hand , climbed mountainous roads using 2-3rd gears. Rest I covered distance on 4th gear, but riding in traffic without shifting gears is real pain in the backside, I was feeling like riding a gearless scooter with clutch! LOL

Went to service center, they immediately recognized the fault and gave me my bike in 3-4 hours.

                              Total Expenses 205/-

                              Breakup:
                              Rs. 15/- Gear Pin
                              Rs. 40/- Packing
                              Rs. 150/- Labor Charges!

When asked them why so much of labor charge, they said they had to open the gear lever completely fix the pin and over haul it.

After this the gears back to normal. Lets hope this situation wont repeat.

I wont call it a failure, I kinda responsible for this too, I did some oiling on gear lever this Friday and tried shifting the up and down without clutch and without engine running (Stupid me!) But on Friday covered 80 kms did not face single problem. Also on Sat while riding to Lavasa I was pretty aggressive with gear shifting, shifting at around 7-9 K RPM. I guess this all has added up to the problem.

Any comments on it? Anyone faced similar problem ever?

I always land gears when parking without clutch, and surely I ride around at 7K RPM. I guess this is a one off indecent. In my case external clutch retention spring got cut and had to get the clutch overhauled when fixing the spring.
One question! How do you change gears by hand when riding?? Amazing feat!
There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.
