One question! How do you change gears by hand when riding?? Amazing feat!
Actually i used to stop shut down the engine, pull the clutch right hand adjust the gear and shift up or down with left hand lol. One thing, this bike pulls easily from 3rd and 4th gear with heavy pillion

I asked SVC if this is any serious problem, he said not worry these things happens. After the fix I am back on the saddle and bike is back to its normal shape. What I feel is, i did some oiling on the gear lever and shifted it without clutch for 8-10 times which might have been catalyst for this problem.

And yes you are right this is one off incident and nothing serious.

    • 8th Service is due in this month end. I am thinking to shift from Yamalube mineral to Fully Synthetic oil, thinking of moving to 'elf Moto Fully Synthetic oil'

One of my friend with Fazer using 'elf Moto FS' and the results are mind blowing! I rode his Fazer and its silk smooth.

      Any suggestions?

Also anyone tried 55 watt bulb in the head light?

        According to this link

        Restitution.aspx

The only FS Elf motorcycle oil is ELF MOTO 4 XT TECH.

But there is no viscosity grade mentioned on it. I would suggest you to stick to something like Motul 7100/300v (15w50 / 15w40 for 300v, 20w50 for 7100). The other one you can try is Petronas FS (that one comes in both 10w40 & 15w50 grades). Shrinathrao is using it on his R15 V1 (15w50). AND I know the shop he bought it from in Pune.

For any further engine oil specific queries, please refer this thread.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Thank you Anant for your reply on it.

I have checked in Aru Traders near Paud Fata and they have Motul grades. I honestly dont want to go for Semi Synthetic, would like to check results on Fully Synthetic one.

For Elf Moto, I have seen it in Suvarnrekha Yamaha, Karve Nagar, the 1 liter bottle costs around Rs. 740/- or 750/-

          Cheers!

All the oils I have mentioned are FS !

The Petronas oil is available in a shop at Sus-Pashan Link road (Right side when going towards Sus road).

Ahh my bad, I got confused between Motul 7100 and Motul 5100.

              Thanks again.

Edit: Elf Moto 4XT Tech is 10W50 grade.

              • I have been facing a weird issue with my SZ-R.

Issue: When I shift gear by holding clutch the RPM drops to 600-700 and then I have to give a throttle to raise the RPM. I also tried to replicate the issue from standstill bike, whenever I accelerate the bike from Stand-still in 1st or 2nd gear and if I immediately hold the clutch the RPM drops to 600-700 and sometimes engine just shuts off.

                Cold Idle RPM - 900
Idle RPM when engine is hot - 1.2K

I suspect my carb setting has been disturbed in 7th service. Also I had carb over-hauled from YFS Pune last month still issue persist.

What can be possible issue? How can I fix it?

I do not face any acceleration issues whatsoever, bike accelerates just fine, its just RPM drops dramatically when I hold the clutch for gear change, I wouldnt have worried but since the RPM drops below the idle RPM I am little concerned on what can be issue.

If anyone can put some light on it.

                Cheers!

Let me understand what the issue is.

                    1. If you check idling in Neutral when the bike is cold, the idling is 900.
                    2. If you check idling in Neutral when the bike is warmed up, the idling is 1200.
                    3. If you check idling in gear with the clutch fully pulled, the idling drops to 600/700 regardless of whether the bike is cold or warm.

                    Did I get it right?

The best way to rectify is to learn to do the carb AFR tune yourself. Check my old signature for pointers. Its easy really, all you need is some patience and a flat head screwdriver.

                    My questions are:
                    1. What FE are you getting? Is it more/less than usual?
                    2. Does the RPM stop somewhere and starts to drop slowly from there while dropping or it drops down instantaneously when you let go of the throttle (in gear + clutch pulled)? Especially on warm engine.

Ans: Some background for it. I had a mileage concern so I told service center to check it, my guess is they made AFR too leaner. My bike was jerking post 8000 RPM to 9500 RPM at high speeds as if it is running out of petrol, from that point I had been facing issue with RPM dropping when holding clutch. I thought issue with carb so got it over hauled from YFS and YFS retuned the AFR and the jerks went off and mileage is steady between 43-50 kmpl in city. Even after retune and overhaul the issue of RPM drops continues.

                      2. Does the RPM stop somewhere and starts to drop slowly from there while dropping or it drops down instantaneously when you let go of the throttle (in gear + clutch pulled)? Especially on warm engine.
Ans: Yes it drops down instantaneously when I hold the clutch and let go of throttle, and it happens on warm engine. You are correct.

Well, the only way to be absolutely sure about the AFR is to read the spark plug.

                        What you can do is,
                        1. remove spark plug (on cold engine) and clean it.
                        2. Ride around at your usual pace for around 10-15 minutes.
                        3. wait for engine to cool again and read plug tip

Here is a general guideline for reading the plug tips.

That way, we can, first of all, ensure if the mixture is in fact correct.

P.S.: I believe we should make a 'Help Me' thread out of this discussion. That will give your problem much more coverage rather than only me replying to it.

                        • Hi,
Myself Gagan from Delhi. I am still not able to decide which bike to go for…
Yesterday, visited to Yamaha Showroom, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi , There I got the under exchange deal for my passion pro which I brought on 27.03.2011, it runs only 18,300 kms.

The sale person of that showroom offer me exchange value of Rs. 32,000/- & new SZ-R (White color) costing me only Rs.33, 000 /- (On Road price- Rs. 65000 – 32,000).

So my questions for the owners of this bike are following –

                          1) Is this bike is really VFM.

                          2) How this bike will performed by pulling total weight of 160kgs (Pillion and Rider).

                          3) My height is around 6.3” & Pillion height is around 5.10”.

                          4) How this bike on maintains aspects…??

                          5) Will this bike surve me for atleast 5 years without major issue like we faced in Bajaj bikes after two years?

                          6) How’s the pickup.. (keeping our weight in mind)

                          7) What is actual mileage (show room guys told me 40-45)

I know there are other bikes too, but I am tight on budget, apart from this bike there is only two bikes I liked

                          1) Unicorn – Rs 71,000 (On Road)

                          2) CBZ extreme. – Rs 75,000 (On Road)

The question here is that, if I am getting good VFM in (Rs. 65,000/-) then why I spend Rs. 10,000 more.

Please suggest and clear my doubts.

                          Thanks

                          • SZ-R is my first bike. Bought it on April 2011.
Till date I have found no issues on the pulling power. Have climbed with a combined weight of around 140 KGs on 5th gear, at 3500-4000 rpm.

But there are 2 problems that bug me:
                            1. Mileage: Ever decreasing. first few months 40 then never ever weent beyond. average: 39 (@3800 rpm - 40kmph), 37 (@4300 rpm - 50kmph). Odo reads 9433 now. Will it get better? Any advice?
                            2. Front wheel doesn't rotate freely. Fork straight or on locking position, the front wheel is quite hard to turn by hand. It feels jammed. SVC always treats the problem by lubricating brake disc, but the free movement stays only for a day or two. I'm having the problem ever since I bought it. i.e, even after 17 months, the SVC couldn't fix it permanently. Friends used to say, the disc will get loose with time. But 17 months?? Help me!

                            2 doubts:
                            1. I miss pass switch and engine kill mainly due to the traffic blocks and aggressive traffic. SS125 have all these facilities!! I asked SVC to replace my switch gear with that of FZ! They are not saying Yes or No! It is possible, isn't it?
                            2. Any way I can fix some LED in the space provided for pilot lamp???

                              1) Is this bike is really VFM.
Ans: The answer is subjective to the need of a person. What you call a VFM is important. Is it that, if it gives you more mileage then its VFM? Or If this bike is maintenance free then its VFM? If you ask me, the pricing it comes it is definitely VFM product by Yamaha, I have been riding it for 1 and half year now. I crashed her 4 times hence my maintenance side went a little high and if you dont drop it then it will ask you do its regular servicing as recommended by Yamaha.

                              2) How this bike will performed by pulling total weight of 160kgs (Pillion and Rider).
Ans: I dont ride it much with pillion, only once I went to mountainous roads with Pillion and pulling a 72 kg pillion with me around 73 kg was never a problem due to its excellent lower end torque.

                              3) My height is around 6.3” & Pillion height is around 5.10”.
Ans: One of my friend is 6'1", he is riding with no problem.

                              4) How this bike on maintains aspects…??
Ans: Like I said regular maintenance and periodic replacement as recommended by Yamaha thats what it takes.

                              5) Will this bike surve me for atleast 5 years without major issue like we faced in Bajaj bikes after two years?
Ans: It should, this bike is launched about 1 and half year ago. Since this is a Yamaha bike durability should not be a problem.

                              6) How’s the pickup.. (keeping our weight in mind)
Ans: Very good. Pulling in second gear from standstill with or without pillion is never a problem.

                              7) What is actual mileage (show room guys told me 40-45)
Ans: I just calculated my bikes mileage about couple of days ago, I have been riding slow between 30-55 kmph due to rain and in City limit I ride slow. I got 49 kmpl, this is with with Reserve to reserve method. Like Yamaha says in the manual, "Mileage depends upon riding habit", if you ride rash, rip it up it will give you less mileage as a matter fact any bike would fetch less mileage. One of the most important part of SZ-R that I found is, The Running-in period of this bike. You follow proper running period and this bike will perform very good.

I know there are other bikes too, but I am tight on budget, apart from this bike there is only two bikes I liked

                              1) Unicorn – Rs 71,000 (On Road)

                              2) CBZ extreme. – Rs 75,000 (On Road)
Ans: Both the bikes are in here for a longer period of time so durability is not an issue over here, for other aspects I cant comment.

The question here is that, if I am getting good VFM in (Rs. 65,000/-) then why I spend Rs. 10,000 more.
Ans: Like I said it is VFM if it fit into your definition of VFM. And being cheaper than other 150cc almost 5 digits can make it only a winner over others.

Please suggest and clear my doubts.

                              Thanks

But there are 2 problems that bug me:
                              1. Mileage: Ever decreasing. first few months 40 then never ever weent beyond. average: 39 (@3800 rpm - 40kmph), 37 (@4300 rpm - 50kmph). Odo reads 9433 now. Will it get better? Any advice?
Ans: You mean to say your bike shows 40 kmph at 3800 RPM? and 50 kmph at 4300 RPM? My bike touches 40 kmph at 3200 RPM and 50 at around 4K RPM. Your mileage problem might be related to number 2.

Help me!
Ans: Check you bike disc for any bends. You are saying that problem persist from 17 months and still not fixed!? Thats too much of time! Try to show it to other service center to check if they can rectify the problem / s. Shoot an email to Yamaha Backoffice, call their helpline, explain them the problem in detail, then see the magic.

                              2 doubts:
                              1. I miss pass switch and engine kill mainly due to the traffic blocks and aggressive traffic. SS125 have all these facilities!! I asked SVC to replace my switch gear with that of FZ! They are not saying Yes or No! It is possible, isn't it?
Ans: This should be possible, but I dont think any authorized service center would do that for you. They would never do a thing which alter the bike cosmetic or performance wise, except their own modifications.

                              2. Any way I can fix some LED in the space provided for pilot lamp???
Ans: I am sorry I am not sure about it.
