    Re: Yamaha Gladiator(All)

    4 Years , 59,300 kms

It was 19th January , 2011 when I persuaded my dad to buy the Gladiator , then called as SS125. I used to stare at the pics of SS125 on the internet , and always dramt of owning. The D day came , and dad rang me up and we went to the showroom to collect the bike. After a lot of wait , the bike stood outside the showroom after a so called "PDI" .

I started the engine , it didn't sound that great , almost soundless.
... Rode it back home extremely carefully , on the way noticed , the bike lacks power.

The bike surely looked amazing in flesh , with the red - black color. I was spell bound. Slowly , the bike became mine as dad found it too "sporty" for him.

My SS125 became my everyday friend to college , which was 26 kms round trip. I thoroughly enjoyed riding it. I hardly knew anything about break-in ... I first did a short speed run before 1000kms on odo.

Soon touring started. The bike complained of nothing , except power & mileage. It would struggle with a pillion on highways and wud return nothing more than 43 - 45 kmpl. It was hard to digest as it was just a 125cc.
Soon , i started solo touring , and thats when i came to know what Gladiator is. It would do 80's all day without complaining.
I used to get 50 kmpl on a regular basis on highways even doing 80 - 90 kmph.

My tours have been never ending , doing 500 - 800 kms a day on my glady , needless to say its amazingly comfortable & durable. Never it left me strandd beside the road.

    FULL DC

Electricals flickering with engine RPM nd bad headlamps were biting me when i came across a blog about full DC ritten by a guy namrd Arun Kumar. I called him up , he helped me unground the coil and my glady became Full DC like Karizmas nd Pulsars.

I was a immature childish noob , and would startup a street race with anyone who overtook me . To my surprise , i could beat many 150cc on the road.

Till date the highest mileage I could fetch is 57 kmpl. The worse I got was 35 kmpl .

The topspeed so far I could attain only once is 119 kmph. However , on a regular basis , 100 kmph is a bit difficult to achieve. Also once past 100 kmph mark , it happily touches 110 kmph if the road permits.

Gladiator lacks TORQUE , so maintaining speeds on highways i very difficult. Also its performance gets badly affected by cross winds / wind drag. Crouching help to some extent.

Gearbox of Yamaha Gladiator is one of the best I have ever experienced. Amazingly smooth yet lot of feel.
The speedometer on my bike is as accurate as the GPS. To some extent , that makes one feel we are going slow (as there is no speedo error )

    Handling

Gladiator / SS125 handles like a track bike , there is no doubt on this fact. People generally don't believe this looking at the skinny tires , but I guess every Glady owner will agree to this point.
Also the brake feel is extremely precise. Under hard braking , rear end might fish tail , but not to that extent that one loses control and falls off.

In one word , Gladiator is an amazing handler. Compare it with any 125 - 150cc , even mono shock bikes , gladiator will still be strong contender in terms of handling.

    Durability

I would say , there is nothing I haven't tried on my SS. From stunts to daily commuting to touring to offroading , it withstands everything without falling apart.

Every purpose is served by the Gladiator flawlessly.

Strange thing is my chain & sprocket is still the stock one that came with the bike. even after 59000 kms , its working fine.

With more hardcore touring , I felt the necessity of upgrading the headlamps and finally went for a high-end HID projector setup , that changed night riding experience completely. I also rewinded my coil for higher power wattage. Now my electricals , work flawlessly with everything including a mobile charger

    Verdict

I would anyday suggest anyone to go for the SS125 / Gladiator. No bike is perfect , nor is gladiator. There are small glitches like the absence of Full DC electricals , LED tail Lamp , Digital dash board. But as a product , its amazing. Extremely no-headache bike. Hardly asks for any maintenance.

If there is anything i would like to change , then it will be the power & torque. I wish Yamaha had taken the 165cc concept seriously and launched it. Glady's frame is extremely capable and can easily handle 14 - 17 bhp without any major changes.

Totally love the bike. And my glady is my first bike , so I am never gonna sell it off. I wish to keep it with me forever , even if I later upgrade to a bigger machine.

Please change the air filter and change the carburator once again. Make sure that you are doing it in a Yamaha service center only.

Yes , you can replace the stock ignition coil with a new aftermarket one.
I am not very sure about the specification of the Gladiator's stock ignition coil.

Changing coil will not affect battery.

And I somehow feel that if you are gaining performance , it means the compression in the engine has increased , which might result in higher vibrations.

After some research in internet, decided to buy an iridium spark plug ( NGK CR7HIX ) and a splitfire 8.8mm ignition cable. Purchased the spark plug for Rs.575 from NGK authorized dealer and splitfire cable for Rs.350 from the local market. When I tried to install the new cable, I found that Gladi's stock ignition cable is permanently attached to the ignition coil. So I just installed the iridium plug with the stock ignition cable itself. The result was amazing as the acceleration increased and it was possible to reach above 80 km/h with less effort than earlier. Also the bike performed much better on any inclined roads. But the problem was vibration which a typical gladiator is free from. It lost the biggest plus point it had. Again researched about iridium plugs and found that splitfire twincore 8.8mm or any other racing cable must be used with iridium plugs, otherwise the result will be vibration.
    My doubts:
    1. Can I replace the stock ignition coil with a new one that supports spiltfire cable?
    2. Will it affect the battery If I changed the stock ignition coil?
    3. What is the specs of stock ignition coil for gladiator?

Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Re: Yamaha Gladiator Drive chain replacement

Hi, Battery replaced in last service. But still issue exists. air filter, spark plug replaced in the last service along (200 km done after last service). issue exist even when i carefully ride through ups and downs with water over the road. I am sure water is not spilled over the crank/oil compartment.. there is self motor the only electrical stuff there. suggest me ...

I thought my problem exists in rain.. but when ride my bike through a half feet depth water it stalls like no fuel/main-reserve... after 5 or 10 mins it is starting again & running normal...

I remember when i ask mechanic to check alternator for low head light power, he removed alternator cover, replaced gasket. After this only i am facing the stalling problem. Whether water entering through miss aligned gasket (may be) and spilling on alternator? also i would like to know what happens when water spills on alternator?
You seem to have done the basic troubleshooting already. May be the battery is low on charge and the electrical system of the bike is not working properly as a result. Also, the carburetor and the air-filter might need a cleaning/replacement. I think it'd be best to take your bike to an authorized Yamaha Service Center.
