    • Issue in Self Start

My Gladiator 5 months old and around 2600km in the odo is showing a problem while trying to self start using the Start button.

This problem is there for nearly a month now. the symptom is like, when engine is warm and i hit start button, some unusual sound is heard while cranking, and upon keeping depressed the start button for a few seconds continuosly after several cranks engine comes to life..

Could this be an issue in the Self Motor, or maybe the starting current is insufficient from the Battery side..

I have not topped the distilled water since 4 months..

Anyone of you have faced this issue before...

      • @Sriram: I had a similar problem, the bike wouldn't start and there would be annoying sound. This turned out to be the battery, just check you bike's battery and also make sure its charging fine.

        • Thanks Arunraj, will post updated feedback after i bring back the vehicle from 3rd free service.

I have one more query. IN the back of the free service slips there are a list of items that the service center should work on, will all those items be covered religiously by those guys???

          • Do you think they do that ? At any given day the number of bike to be serviced is beyond the number that can be handled by any servicing center and yamaha gladiator owners are no longer the "privileged" ones for sure

In case you can befriend a mechanic who service gladiators and personally make sure he does the job then its good.Castrol Bike Zone guys in general do a better job than the servicing centers, but not recommended if your bike is still in warranty period as that would void the warranty.

            • Thanks Arun, pl hold by for feedback after i bring the vehicle from SVC.

I inquired the manager of the SVC about whether they will cover the points during their service job he did acknowledge it with a positive feedback saying the points might increase as the service count increases...

              • @Sriram: They pretty much would agree to have because its their job. What I have quoted is from my experience and I may add that not all service centers are alike. Its been close to a year since I have the bike taken to a service center, the last time for a tappet adjustment (for this you should know the right clearance so proffered the service center to Castrol bike zone). Normally I do most of the jobs myself, changing disc brake pads, rear brake shoes, air filter, engine oil change , carb cleaning to name a few.

The comprehensive toolkit can be bought from the Yamaha Parts Dealer. You have to place an order for it. If you want then you can get a xerox done for the Gladiator Workshop manual. JD sir has already posted the same in PDF form here.
You can get the basic tools from any hardware shop. The screw driver with universal head that supports lots of attachments is essential.Get a whole wrench set if you want from the store too.

Posting on xbhp after so long time. Things havent been well lately. Got kicked out of college thanks to the faculty who wanted to settle a personal vendetta. They made sure I didnt pass. 2 years of my life wasted. 2 years of my Automotive/Mechanical knowledge gone down the drain.

                    • @Sriram: You can either buy a whole toolkit... The ones you get like in a case... I mean like the Bosch Ones... I have one at home( not a bosch)... It helps with quick fixes around the house and also helps while working on the bike...
You can also get a list off parts and go tool shopping... The workshop manual as nightwing said will help you with that. Try getting good quality stuff even if it means paying a little extra. You do not want the tools to break or in some cases like allen keys for the edges to become blunt.

@nightwing: So wat are u going to do now?? Do PM me. Thats very sad man.

                          • Hii

                            Hii Everyone.

Current status ODO reading 800 kms

My Gladi gave me 680 kms on unleaded petrol worth rs 850. Averaging approx 44.5kms / litre, before she went in for her first service.

I believe SVC have overworked and underpaid mechanics.. i mentioned in the Job sheet that the fuel air mix should be adjusted...now the idle is too high..when i cold start it comes to life quickly showing 1500 rpms..but after warming up the idling is close to 2k rpms...

there is an exaggerated noise when i press the starter button on a warm engine..and i noticed that there is a sudden blip in the tacho..ie the moment i press the button..shows 5k rpm..and then drops down..

still not too happy with the acceleration..( hate to see em splendours powering past)..
the engine is very refined under 5k rpms though..vibes only after 5k rpm in all gears

Thanks for your support guys. Packed up my bags and left already. Had a long look at the machines, tools and the Go-kart that we all were working on and I realized that now there's no coming back.

The normal idling is between 1200-1500 RPM. It's easy to set and can be done by any local mechanic. You can do it yourself as well. The idling screw(it's golden in color on a new bike and loses it's shine as time goes by ) needs to be turned clockwise to decrease the RPM and anticlockwise to increase the RPM. Do it while the engine's warmed up. Make sure to keep an eye on the tachometer. Once it's set. Turn off the bike and start it again to make sure the rpm is steady.
Check the choke cable and the throttle cable. Sometimes it gets stuck and causes an RPM increase while starting the bike. Also get your air filter cleaned just to make sure.
The Gladiator needs to be revved hard for it to perform on par with the commuters. Trust me,once you complete the run-in you can wipe off the smile from the Splendor's face. Real power comes after 60kmph.

Amazingly even my bike returns a similar fuel efficiency figures

I never found any service center (may it be yamaha or honda) with a proper satisfactory service. These guys just wash the bike, change the engine oil & do too little while servicing. Just remind them about the air fuel adjustment before taking the bike back. It would be better to get the bike serviced at any local & trusted mechanic after the warranty period.

The tacho blips even in my bike whenever i use the self start. Still i dont know the reason
