And if black smoke comes out, get your Monster checked in YMSC. Yes Braveheart is true, but might take longer than 500kms before the engine smell might "reduce" but not disappear. I have travelled about 7000 kms and the engine smell is still there which is normal, though reduced. Yes its does smells like burnt oil or something, but stronger than that of Bajaj. Dont know if this is bad or good.

As for the chain spray. You can purchase the Yamaha lube, costing about 500 bux from the showroom. But use the chain cleaner first (mine is Motul chain cleaner purchased from YMSC). And to use the Chain cleaner, your chain should not be wet with water else it will not work properly. And after this only wash the chain with water. When you are satisfied with the cleanliness, use the chain spray.
    Thx mate! That was helpful.
I ve already got my bike 2nd service on 1st of may and have travelled >6k kms. Its not so worrying as it seems i believe since only once in a week i can smell something strange, but yes, when it smells, i ve observed that more often than not, engine seems to be very hot even during short rides.

and since our bikes are fairly new, is it really required to polish them so soon? i am a ltl worried as i personally feel that they can do more harm then good!

what i was referring to is cleaning up the organic matter off the neck of the exhaust pipe... n not the silencer...the place where the exhaust pipe comes our of the cylinder head is the hottest exterior part in a motorcycle and the temperature can easily burn organic matter. when it rains or on a wet road this matter sticks to the pipe and burns slowly producing just a burning smell. I clean the pipe and the smell also goes away. That is just my experience but it could be something else too. My bike does not smell a bit except when driven in rains till i clean it the next time. This pipe is on the engine block and so the smell comes from the engine only.

polishing has nothing to do with old / new. Its what finish you want to keep on the bike. Even on a brand new bike you will get an improved finish with polishing. Polishing also decreases the appearence of small scratches and keeps the paint looking new longer and brighter, it also forms a protective thin layer to prevent water and stuff from contacting the paint directly. but polishing should be done carefully, use of abraisive cloth/presence of particles on surface can permanently damage the paint while rubbing. also polish does not stay on for long so I do it after every 10-15 days...
I don't think using a separate polish for plastic panes makes any sense as they are coated with paint and polish only acts on the surface.

          +1 to that!
For plastics, you can try using car dashboard wax spray polish to remove the white dulling&get back the original plastic color eg.in mudguards/speedo etc. Don't spray it onto the speedo glass though.

oh! thanks buddy. Should have read between the lines.....
But as far as I have observed, the smell is there even if no organic matter is burnt on the exhaust pipe coming out of the engine and that too on Dry Day.... Anyways, I shall have a proper check on this buddy.... thanks for the clarification and info..... The smell is very much stronger at the initial running period but gradually reduces with the distance travelled.

Basically I took two FZ16 numberplate clamps and cut of the tack welding this left me with two plates with bolts tacked on them and the cust off a 3rd of the plate and drilled a hole is each of them. Used these two plates to suspend diagonally from the lower two screws on the windshield bent the number plate to suite the profile of the bike and Voopppa! Done. I hope Yamaha actually takes this design refines and use it as OE rathar that stick an ugly looking number plate bang on the windshield.
Buddy, can you post a pic of your modified number plate. Might be helpful.... thanks.

i have to get both chain clean & spray, can u plp tell wat u paid for it .
chain cleaner & spray will cost around Rs.500 bux each. And for each service i.e. chain cleaning and chain spraying the SC charges Rs.200 bux in Shillong. Might differ in your place. Whenever I go for servicing, I normally carry my own Chain cleaner and spray to cut down expenditure. And having your own becomes handy while on tour.

            • disaster in FZ at last.

my FZ crossed 11000 km (read eleven thousand) on odo..
no major till date.. until today , 4.30 pm, suddenly, my FZ failed to shift gear . but, i couldnt only downshift, managed to upshift. the spring action for the downgearing was disabled. was able to downshift with some tricky work with toe and foot.
luckily it was 2 kms to nearest yamaha SC. got into their garage, shouted at them, for the bad engine quality, they said it was the first time such a major fault had occured in all FZ they sold.
they opened the clutch case cover, and discovered, the gear shaft spring was broken, and was instantly changed under warranty. i was amazed to look inside the clutch assembly, and resembled the pulsar clutch plates. unfortunately i wasnt allowed to take any photos of the opened clutch case( may be cos, yamaha has secret components inside)

1 hour later everything was fixed. and bike is spinning back on its full glory..
speedy work though compared to bajaj's lazy stupid mechanics i experienced previously with my pulsar 150 ug3.

if any of u guys faced such bad times, please share with us...

I took delivery of a FZ s two days back and I love the bike to bits, it looks a dream handles like a beauty. But I have a problem with where the front number plate is placed on the bike.. Any of have ideas of placing it where it does not affect the look of the bike. And if I sticker on the front mudguard which would be the last option is it legal.. Really need advise.

                  Thanks
i put it on the front mudguard as a sticker. so far so good....

and about the burning smell.... did the smell suddenly start one day?

happened to me too... turns out there was a small piece of polythene stuck under the exhaust just under the engine.. must hav picked it up on the road only... anyway, that was burning and causing the smell... i removed the solid piece that was still left unburnt but some of it had formed a layer on the exhaust. the smell still comes now but i noticed today that the melted plastic coating is coming off on its own... dunno if plastic is supposed to burn off into air without leaving any residue... so hopefully the layer should be gone in a few more days.

                  hope this helps. cheers.

                    Another one for you guys

Dont know how it occured, but on the right side of the fuel tank there is a scratch 2 inches long (almost), it seems that some1 while taking out his bike banged the handle to the tank, its not just scrached but broken, i can feel the crack in the plastic. Although it doesnt look too bad, but still can u guys advice what can be done in order to make that less visible!

Ok, I will observe that next time I go to Yamaha. So, avneetrekhi20, you have 3 options now:
                              1. Replace that tank cover.
                              2. Dismantle, stick it with Fewi Quick&then fit back
                              3. My choice-dismantle, take to local painter, he will put lappam on it, stick it&then touch it up.
I did the same when my Fiero F2's mudguard cracked due to kids playing football in the building.
