I myself seldomly use rear brakes. Till now over almost 17k kms, I have changed my front brake pads once at around 10k kms and will need another replacement in 2 - 3k kms, whereas my stock rear disk pads are still going good.
Brake discs on bikes are sufficiently close to the bikes center-line that pulling to one side is not an issue
In fact, for the longest time bikes only had a single front disc. Many still do. Twin front discs are fitted to increase brake swept area,
but they only became practical when tire technology caught up with the braking force twin discs could generate.

    • Thanks Ron. But as said above by some xbhpian, does engine braking put more pressure on the engine or braking puts more pressure?

I am asking this coz I travel 30kms daily roundtrip. This route has about 20kms of express highway ride. I do about 65 to 70kmph on 6th gear at 4krpm. So when the speed drops to 52 to 55 kmph I change to 5th gear. This is where the engine braking seems much pronounced than speeds below this. I avoid sudden braking though.

Rather than keeping the bike in 6th gear all through the 20kms stretch, I vary the speeds by changing between 5th and 6th gears. Cant go back to 4th coz other cars and bikes are fast enough on this route. I guess this wont be a problem for my engine. Expert opinions are welcomed on this.

They have just mentioned to vary speeds from time to time. I think it also implies that it doesnt matter if the bike is ridden in one constant gear.

Anyways this was my last doubt about break-in period. Wont bother much from now on

Tips for braking on a motorcycle
scroll down for right info after opening the link.
          Nice document friend.
BTW, it's mentioned to use the FRONT brake most of the times in this document,
just quoting about 4 instances, you'll find more if read in details.

          "Downward slope:
So always use the front brake while riding downward, even if it's counterintuive to you.

          With sports bikes:
you will only lightly touch the rear brake for a very short moment (or only apply the front brake, if that's too difficult).

          An emergency stop:
That's the reason for the advice not to touch the rear brake in an emergency stop.

          Braking in a corner:
To brake hard, you should use the front brake, and you can, without going down."

          • help needed

            Hello guys,
I own a black v2 which has done 9100kms and has just finished its 5th service last week at Monarch Yamaha Pune. Everything is extremely well with the bike, even the service has been carried out properly. But from the time when i picked my bike after service(1Dec2012) there was minor sound i noticed coming from the front wheel (99% from the front wheel caliper and disk setup). It was very nominal and hence i thought it will vanish with time but eventually it has increased (not loud) but can be heard clearly if the traffic is low. It makes khissss(not continuous but once per complete rotation of wheel)..... type of noise.

So what i want to know is what could be reason behind it. And Ofcourse I want to get rid of it.
Pune guys if you could guide me with a good mechanic for this cause, it would be great.

            thanks

                Get the wheel bearings lubricated.

Bingo. !. except the corner part. I am not a supporter of trail braking or any form of braking in corner.

Since i brake with same ratios, the things which i have gone through are
                front tyre life increases.
it always helped me while instant braking.
i never meat with accident due to braking issue or front tyre lock as been known for riding skills from the age of 8

U can ask yourself, that how many times u have been gone through front Tyre skid while instant braking.
AT the End "what ever logic u use, your tyre should not skid while braking"
that is the skill of rider.
                Ride Safe
Tyre doesn't skid if you are using only front to stop. If you are putting force at once, then it will, which is wrong of course.
There is no logic of increasing front tyre life, it anyway wears slowly then rear and you get them both changed at once. So no gain, no loss.
                On braking,
                a. your ratio logic is fine for normal commuTOURing, if you are comfortable with the approach, then nothing beats it.
                b. when you know you need to stop immediately, you need to use front. That is the safest and fastest way to stop.

I guess you still have to learn how to use front effectively, there is interesting discussion on how to brake effectively in the forum or I had once written a short tutorial somewhere in this thread only.

You should vary speed until prescribed rpm on all gears. That is suggested.
Use engine braking but not for sudden downshifts at very high rpms, that will damage the engine.
Bring on your queries, that is why the forum is there.

Bro Go for Black if your heart says..! I own a black for the past 3months..! keeping up the looks and shine of a bike is very much in the hands of the owner..! if he treats it like a queen it will be a queen forever else it would lose its charm..! I learned this lesson from my friend who owns a P220 for the past two years.. Its a black beauty.. Still looks neat and fine..! I challenged him that i will keep the same shine glow and looks of my Baby R1..

                              • Bro i m surprized of the advice for front brakes..! Whenever i had to panic brake(When animals pedestrians suddenly run into the highway) from 100Kmph i used to apply the front one with equal gaps substantially and then go on with the rear one! I thought it was a bad practice..! Since from my childhood i was taught "USE BOTH THE BRAKES SON".. now happy to hear an expert advice that its the way to do
