I got a Blue Impulse last week. Have finished around 280KM. Bought the bike primarily for long distance weekend trips - cant wait to finish the 1000KM run-in as quickly as possible. Overall, so far, am satisfied with the Bike's performance. I see that there are some Impulse veterans already on this forum - want your thoughts/assistance on a couple of points/concerns that i noticed:

    1. The engine gets heated very quickly. Not sure if this normal for the Bike?
    2. The rear brakes are poor (very spongy). Do you suggest any modifications to improve the feel?
    3. The gearbox (as already shared on many forums) isn't that great. I hope the feel changes once the bike gets more miles.
    4. Looking for good knuckle guards for the bike. Do you have any suggestions? I stock Rs 80 ones are poor and are useless, want to get better quality ones if available. I am from Bangalore, kindly suggest a vendor from where I could pick up good ones.
    5. I am also looking at changing the headlight to a more powerful one, as I would be doing long rides and they would come in handy. Do you suggest any specific type of bulb etc? what do you think will be good?

Request the owners to kindly share best practices as it would be a massive help. Thanks in advance guys!
Congrats on your Impulse and welcome to Xbhp!

A new engine will always heat up more and at the end of the day its an air cooled engine. During the running in period avoid using the bike in bumper to bumper traffic. This is not specific to the Impulse but all air cooled motors. I don't have any complains about the gearbox or the rear brake so cant help you much there. As its a new bike the brake pads must be seating with the drum so avoid doing any modifications now.

If you do change the headlight a 55/60W will be the maximum I would look for in a Halogen. Bear in mind that you will need to accommodate all the electrical connectors which are tucked in behind the headlight cowl or it would look unsightly. A round reflector has the best beam pattern.

    • Thanks Gyro!
I am looking to change only the bulb. Is it as simple as replacing the current bulb with a more powerful one? or does it require any modifications?
      Cheers!

I would use a relay powered directly from the battery with a separate fuse, will prevent your present wires from frying with the heat. Also, just so that you know, a higher wattage bulb will run dimmer at low rpm, be prepared for that. If you want something which will run bright at all revs then nothing beats a HID.

        • Thanks Gyro. Doing some research online to see if it is economically feasible to get the HID kit.
One more question - Today i notice that there were 2 thin pipes that were dangling near the base of the shock absorber. A thicker opaque tube and a slightly thinner transparent tube. I thought i had not noticed this before. I hope nothing has come off!

Can you pls tell me what these tubes are and if they need to be "tucked-in" anywhere.
          Thanks
          Cheers!

          • Hi,
I am coming up to my first service.

            - What are the things that ideally should be carried out as a part of first service?
            - Should i ask for anything specific?
            Cheers!

            • Guys ,
I'm facing lugging sound ,its struggling even when the bike is in 2nd gear when the speed is some 6-7 kmph ,or the engine goes off like if its in 4th or 5th gear.
what could be the problem ? I recently had my first servicing done .Did the svc guy messed up anything with afr screw ??
If you ride like there's no tomorrow there won't be.

Nothing specific .Just make sure they pour crt grade oil 10w30 mineral.Tell them to drain the exisiting oil and pour ,not just topup .
You can ask them to lube chain, check tyre pressure

As far as I can remember, one pipe from the carb float bowl, one from the airbox and one from the carb vent, should be a total of three. Dont think the battery drain exists as its a MF battery. The airbox drain should have a plug on it.

Edit - there should be one for the drain of the fuel filler cap, will click snaps and post them here

                    • yes one drain pipe from the carb (black tube) , the other is from the air filter/air box with a plug (yellowish in colour, transparent)
