  • The tik sound

    Hi
Even I get the tik tik sound when i start her up.During delivery i was told that the sound of some decomp(I think that was the term he used) pump to spread oil in engine.I can hear it only at the start when I warm her up.
Is that correct or do I need to get it checked? Please advise.

Also FYI for prospective owners-i has asked at the 2 different showroom before buying about warranty for stone black color cause i had read somewhere in the forum stone color is not covered under warranty. Both said there is no problem.
First Page of manual it is mentioned that Stone Black is not covered under warranty.
I am happy with my bike just letting you guys know.

Now the bike is back to Electronics City Motor for fixing the tik tik sound. This issue has occured because of Cam issue and "Banergatta Brand Service Center" also asked me to get it fixed by them or Electronics City Motor. Once again Electronics City Motor refuse to acknowledge the issue but they were not left with any choice as I had already esclated this to RE.

In this regard, kindly let me know is it okay to let engine part open to adjust cam gear setting? Will there be any adverse affect or any chance they can mess up with factory fitted parts.

    Thanks,
    Alok

    • 1 Spoke Replaced + Rear Wheel Truing

On 23 July 2015, while washing the Blue Bird, I noticed one spoke that got cut near the hub and was dangling freely on the rear wheel, which was rotating slightly unevenly, indicating slightly bent rim, but I didn't feel any wobbling, while riding. I was in two minds: whether to ride to Pudupet, where wheel truing mechanics were available or to the nearest Royal Enfield authorised service station, Sri Velavan Motors, Anna Salai, Chennai, located just 2 km from my home. I chose the latter, called them, fixed appointment for the after-lunch session, rode there and got the work done costing ₹ 382 including replacement of one spoke priced ₹ 9. I paid by my credit card without any extra charges. They took two hours to finish the job that included removal of the rear wheel from the bike and removal of tyre and tube from the rim and fitting them back after wheel-truing. Now, the rear wheel rotates freely and evenly.

      • Re: Royal Enfield Thunderbird -Mudflap help please

        Hi Guys,
I got my bike 2 months back.Since its monsoon time TB sprays a lot of mud on people behind. Have been looking at mudflaps. The big ones are functional but arent atall pleasing to the eye.I got one fitted but it doesnt quite cover the whole guard and still sprays from the side.
Does anyone have solution-Other than fitting the big flap with hole for the exhaust.
        thanks in advance.

        • Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 - competent mechanics in BLR

          Hello All
I have acquired a used 2013 TB500 with about 10000 Kms. Upon riding and comparing the TB500 with a new Bullet500 of a colleague, I observed that the (carburetted) Bullet500 has much superior pickup and can coast easily - meaning if the throttle is let go, the bike still runs easily.

Not so the TB500. I need to wring the throttle and letting it go leads to engine braking. Both models have the same crank.

I went to RE Service centre behind Shoppers Stop (Bannarghatta Road) and they plugged the ECU to a computer, launched a software program [Keihin] and a few clicks later told me they changed the ECU mapping. All that is required is to lubricate the throttle.

Not convinved by this answer, since the ride on the Bullet500 was still fresh in memory, I went to a nearby mechanic. Sundar, a Bullet specialist, has a workshop in Koramangala Block 1, about 200 metres away from Barbeque Nation. He took a ride and concluded that the Clutch needs to be changed (1600 Rupees) as well as the swingarm bush (Rs 600). In his words, " the engine is running but the bike does not move". Which makes me wonder, if this is a clutch issue, it should only affect gear shifts, not after the shifting has been done.

What do you folks think ?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I m not sure with what is wrong with your bike however speak to Prakash (supervisor) in bannerghatta service station. Tell him your frustration he should definitely help

              • Blue Bird Gets Tyre Inflator

Blue Bird was in hibernation for 15 days. When I gently kicked her on 8 Oct 2015 morning, she started chirping happily in the very first kick!

Based on good reviews, I bought ResQTech tyre inflator from amazon.in costing ₹ 999 as I could not use my XUV 500's tyre inflator which has 15A rating and Blue Bird's 12V socket was connected through her ignition system with a maximum current of 5A. ResQTech is directly connected to the battery terminals with a maximum current of 6A. Today, I checked the air pressure and both the wheels needed 2 psi more. So, using ResQTech, I inflated both the wheels to the specified pressures quickly. Nowonwards, ResQTech will accompany Blue Bird in all long rides.

I gave my bike for service at RE Service centre near SHoppers Stop.
I have been told the Standard 500 has a lighter crank that explains its rocket-like pickup. The Thunderbird 500 like the Classic 500 has the heavier crank.
Let us see how the bike turns out post service.

                    • Help needed in choosing lower ah battery

                      Hi team
Need help in choosing battery for my thunder bird 500. My existing exide battery is dead. Its a 14ah battery. When I searched in net 14ah batteries are only available in exide and sf sonic which costs 3.2k approx. But I had a very bad experience with exide batteries 3 batteries all didn't last more than 18months.
I could find 12ah batteries from amaron for 1.6k and find very good reviews about them and one in my old bike still running from 2 years please do help me If I can install 12ah battery instead of 14 one. All electrical should run fine as only reducing current not voltage. Please shred some light on this

Have encountered one more issue. When i am back from my recent ride there was more than 3 liters of water in my fuel tank(don't know how it went) hence it was not starting.
I have left the bike at my regular mechanic he cleared the water put fresh petrol cleaned fuel pump and when tried to start again the bike started but was turning off as soon as you leave the throttle. He told he will check on the and asked a day time. Next day when i inquired he told ECU and battery needs to be replaced :O. Battery i know it was dying.
But replacing ECU came as a shock to me (costs 8.5k aprox). I don't think some thing might be wrong with ECU if its a small part could have replaced it but since its expensive i want to be sure that it the faulty part. Is there any way of testing if my ECU is working fine or gone apart from putting my ECU in another bike and checking. I don't know any one who owns a TB 500 that close and asking some one whom i don't know that well to put my ECU in their bikes is like asking for trouble.
Please do help me on this.

I had the same problem where there was no pickup after 3k rpm that's a clutch issue. Bike used to ride well till 3k rpm and when you cross that there is no pickup just rpm will rise and lot of vibrations.
Replace your clutch plates it will be fine.

I think this is a very good point. Thinking abt the problem again looks like the clutch plate is the root cause.

                          • [RE Thunderbird 500] Beginning of a new era [Feeding my wanderlust]

Well, this is my first post ever

On Nov 22, 2015. A new member was introduced to our family, RE TB 500 Stone Black.

                            I live in Dombivli, Maharashtra.
Booked my bike a month before by paying rupees 5000/- and she was available and ready in stock.

Few stickers on the bike tells me that manufacturing date is from July, 2015 - so that was OK.

Got it from Soniya Motors Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, Maharashtra)
                            Paid for 3-year insurance - 10,000/-
Two wheeler loan at 10.75% interest (Diminishing Balance Interest Rate).

                            Why Thunderbird?

Basically my interest is to travel around long distances, so comfort is the primary requirement.

It was kind of an only considerable comfortable-cruising bike option. Avenger does not appeal to me.
Did some research and only found good things.
Thunderbird is not just cruiser; it looks quiet more than that definitely.

Why 500cc? (compare to TB 350)

                            • FI engine
                            • Better torque
                            • Better acceleration
                            • So - why not?

As per my perspective, buying a Royal Enfield bike is a luxury, so you might go for the best available. Price and Mileage are secondary in case of experience and luxury.

I've done around 15000 kms till now. Do you have any TB500 specific suggestions for me?

                              Thanks in advance.
