      Hi guys,

I have a query regarding chain cleaning and lubing. Is it necessary to clean the chain every time before lubing ? or should we clean the chain on alternate lubing cycles ?

      Thanks
      Busy finding peace

I clean the Chain every alternate Lube cycle.

if its dirty clean it, otherwise just lube it. there is no set rule as to cleaning it every x cycles.
now don't ask what is 'dirty' .. just use common sense
btw, if you can spare the time and effort to clean it every 500km, well n good.

i clean it every 500 to 800 kms depending on the dirt accumulation.
especially after the servicing because the guy uses grease for lubing.

frequent cleanups require hardly 20 minutes and then 5 mints for lubing.(motul)

it definitely increases the mileage and pickup and smoothness.

              highly recommended.

              cheers.

That's very bad. Similar thing happened to my duke 200, after 4 years. it should not happen to you so soon. Get it checked with the service station. They will probably change your tank.

Bike was out in the heavy downpour today for couple of hours. The 12v socket and USB that I bought form Ali Express didn't short under the downpour and the product looked fine. Tested it after reaching home and it worked great! Redline plus was not bad as well. Though they recommend not to place it out under heavy rainfall on their website, wiping it with a cloth made it good to ride.

                        • Persisting stalling and engine noise with my Duke 390

                          Greeting all,

I ride a late 2013 (not the first batch) Duke 390. Its about 2.5 years old now and odo reading is just over 11000kms as its mostly ridden over weekends. Its out of warranty.

We all know the common issues that Dukes has been plagued since launch and has been rectified over time. I’ve had my share of troubles with my motorcycle but much of these issues being a common phenomenon, I was able to resolve them. However there are two issues that services guy's and service engineer has no idea about. They claim it to be normal but I find it hard to believe being ridden couple of other duke 390s.

Now coming to the issues, there are two things:

                          1. Unstable idle at times and bike stalling under abrupt stops.
This started to happen after couple of months after purchasing the bike. As seen in the video below, bike idles okay for few seconds but then starts to go up and down. It does not stalls at idle but when throttle is closed abruptly after accelerating. It shuts down immediately. The shut downs are not frequent these days though it used to be. It seems to be have fixed itself as I ranked up couple of thousand kilometers. But the unstable idle is still there. See video taken recently.
                          2. Constant ticking noise from the engine.
This one not a functional issue. The same reason why SC has been refusing to even consider it. It's more of an annoyance and a really frustrating one at that. The ticking is loud at times. Not very much but just enough that you can hear it clearly. Its more prominent during decelerating. I guess everyone here can understands the importance of sound in a motorcycle. Its part of the experience but its hard to convince SC guys about it . Coming to the noise, It sounds somewhat like valve clearance is off. So the SC guys have attempted to fix that multiple times. But the sound has been the same after all the attempts. So clearly it's not the valves. I’ve spent good time tightening tank, headlight and other parts. I’ve made sure that it's not any wires touching the vibrating parts. So did the SC guys. So its not something out of the engine. The noise comes from top half of the engine. I’ve attached two audio clips. See this link https://drive.google.com/folderview?...kU&usp=sharing

I’ve had countless visits and multiple days spent at the local SC but none of the above were rectified. I’ve even developed a habit of blipping throttle during sudden braking to overcome issue #1. But #2 is so annoying that I have thought of selling the machine just because of it.

I hope some of the experts in community can advise me on this. This could be something that someone else experienced. Looking forward to your valuable inputs.

                          Thanks in advance!

1st problem: get the throttle checked/ replace
And secondly get the cam chain tensioner replaced

for the first issue you could try the following fixes in order:
                              1. check throttle cable.. unlikely cause but just in case.
also check for vacuum leak i.e. around the air filter box to throttle body connecting pipe.
some info on vacuum leaks: http://procarmechanics.com/problems-caused-by-an-engine-vacuum-leak/

                              2. have them connect the diagnostic tool and check for any error codes. if any fix accordingly. otherwise have them clear the dtc/memory. Once it is clear, just start the bike and let it idle for 15 minutes (do not open throttle, let it just stand and idle). after a 15 minute idle, shut it off for a couple of minutes and then start it up again and go for a spin and check.

                              3.
                              - have the throttle body removed and cleaned. the throttle body has a ICS (Idle Speed Control) stepper motor mounted on it.. this needs to be checked or swapped with another one. i doubt if the svc know how to check the ics, so swapping it with another one is better.

                              - check if the tps (throttle position sensor) is working correctly. i think one needs to measure resistance values(doubt if the svc knows how to do it). so try and swap it with another tps and observe.
                              - the other sensor on the throttle body is the TMAP (Temperature & Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor.. again either get it checked or swapped.

As for the second issue, am not able to clearly distinguish the abnormal sound you refer to.
btw, how did the svc attempt to adjust the valve clearances ? On the ktm's it requires shim replacement unlike a nut type adjustment on say a Pulsar.
It could also be an exhaust leak.. try changing the exhaust gasket.. who knows even that erratic idle might be due to an exhaust leak!

Last week I had this problem.

I did some soft core off-roading. Got stuck in crevices of cracked clay. (Metzeler slapped right on my face for going off-road)

Then went back to road and was speaking with a guy for 15min

After that when I started the bike it stops after a second. Tried again for few times. No change. Also tried toggling engine kill switch no change.

After that I switched key to off and switched on after few seconds. Bike started normally. No stalling.

                                What could be the issue.
