  • Re: KTM 390 - The original Hooligan - Ownership Thread

Finally got the bike today evening after 4 months of waiting!
Had made the payment yesterday and insisted to get the delivery today since it was a very auspicious day (parents' instructions!).

Am riding it good and hard. Not babying it at all. Can hit 6th gear on only long open road.

Initial impressions after riding 40 km:

    - Great acceleration, bike is fun from the word go.
    - Super cool sound on startup and riding. Feels like you are riding something special.
    - Temperature bar was high even at the time of delivery, since the showroom person had done the PDI. Felt the heat but it is not unbearable.
    - Bike starts fine, just needs couple of seconds of pressing. It is not a soft-touch start like my ZMR, but can live with it.
    - Bike stalled on few occasions while taking off on 1st gear. Not an issue. Needs getting used to the clutch.
    - The clutch does not feel hard to me at all. Rode the bike to home in heavy traffic, and do not remember feeling any problems using the clutch.
    - Did not feel any vibrations anywhere, yet(!).
    - Did not hear any noise like chain hitting swingarm and the other common observations reported so far, yet(!).

    - Front brake lever feels very light. Cannot feel the bite. Maybe it will (should!) improve with time.
    - EDIT: The rear brake pedal is set very much towards the left (inside). So its not easy to apply the rear brake.
    - This has happened a few times: when I shift up from 1st, it shown Neutral many times and I need to shift again to 2nd. I'm not shifting it soft, still it happens. Don't like it. It isn't shifting cleanly from 1st to 2nd.
    - Other than the 1st-to-2nd shift problem, the gears feel smooth if I shift at the right RPMs, otherwise it gets clunky. But I guess this is the same with most bikes.

Bike is bloody good, but need to be careful because it tends to shoot forward as we gun the throttle!

Another question....isin't anyone going for finacing through public sector banks?? They offer better plans.

Govt banks are good and have great offers but unless you have a long term account with them, there is too much hassle.

And I don't know how correct I am but when I used to use speed petrol in my bike the cam chain tensioner use to get loose very fast and create tik tik sound.
Please let me know if there is an option in KTM 390 called 'Cam Chain Tensioner'. I googled a bit and found this document:

OOPS! We ran out of fuel. The page you’re looking for is beyond our reach. Let’s get you back on track!

Page 15 in above document talks about this and is this really adjustable? Please advise...

Got the KTM 390 delivered today. Keeping in mind that my last bike was a Yamaha R15 V1, here is the first impressions after riding for some 20 kms -

              • The bike pulls madly from somewhere around 4k rpm onwards. Below that, the bike grumbles. This characteristic is similar to my previous bike.
              • The seat-handlebar position is different. I am right now missing the R15's clip-ons. Also, the rear seat prevents me from sliding backward. (I am 5'7'')
              • The bike is well balanced, just like the R15. However, the R15 seemed more fluid and graceful in following rider inputs. The KTM did not feel just as telepathic. Mostly, a few hundred kms under the belt should alter my opinion.
              • The front suspension is slightly more stiffer than the R15. However, the rear suspension is bouncing all over the place. Needs to be adjusted.
              • No starting issues at all.
              • The fan flows forward - so no heating issues either.
              • The brakes are faded - the showroom guys had put their shit polishing liquids on the disk plates! Need to run about a hundred kms to get back the bite.
              • The clutch is stiff - I will develop new muscles in a few days.
              • The rear brake lever is just so short!

Thats it for now. Will update after riding around a bit.
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

                390 quote from KTM BTM:
2,12,645 + 500 for smart card + 150 for NSC + 200 for affidavit. Is this the amount everyone is paying? Plus they are claiming 9K increase in price near future.

Yes tensioners can be adjusted, I recently got my ninja 250's adjusted a new one costs around3k but it must be cheap for the 390, for eg pulsar's just cost about 400

Buddy, sorry I have no idea about deliveries in Wakdewadi showroom. I got from Bundgarden. Delivery numbers are unreliable, I didn't keep bother to keep track of it. Might be around 50s. Irrespective of the showroom, my experience is that the sales people are bit lethargic. You need to call them, visit them, chase them.
I suggest you visit the showroom and find out your estimated delivery date. Or at least call them.

@rohitsapru what rpm does your bike idle at ? The reason I ask is, when I first took a test ride on the 390 I too stalled the bike. The test bike I rode then had a much slower idle than the one I have.
