yup.. assume it will start only when the crank is kept as pressed for 5 seconds..
Behave as if it is normal for High Powered bikes.. no embarrassment

The starting of the engine is electronically managed by the ECU. It decides exactly how much fuel/air to put in to start it up. The manual explicitly states NOT to touch the throttle at startup as it will create fuel mismanagement and the ECU will not let the Engine startup

I received the bike with 1 Kms on its odometer. Others in the showroom got them with 0 on the meter. Right now, it has 230 kms or so.

I have followed running in, but didn't exceed 5000 rpm for the first 160 kms trip, from Jaipur to Ajmer. Took 3 breaks too during this trip. Now, I have started touching 6000 rpm occasionally.

        1. The rpm at idle is going up and down by 1-2 bars on the digital display, even when throttle is not touched. This is not during morning, this is after a ride. Is it normal? Is it running lean?

        2. The bike doesn't start sometimes in mid traffic. This starting problem is slowly getting on my nerves. Its embarrassing both in traffic & workplace. My P{ulsar starts in one crank, and Duke doesn't start in 4.

        3. I hear some strange sounds while riding it. I can't make out whether these are from engine or from elsewhere. They come occasionally while riding.

Heating is not a big problem, as my work place is anyways on an open road, and barely 4 kms away from home. Can anyone who's kept pace with this thread help me out?
rpm of every d390 fluctuates a bar or two.. no worries. Use the kill switch during traffic signals and press the startup button for 3-4 secs. Bike should start in one go. The rear noise should be the chain slapping against swingarm. Get this checked at first service or when you get the time to visit SVC. Happy riding

RPM at idle fluctuates 1 bar on my ZMR too. This is not an issue.

Why would you want to change the air-filter in the first place ?
What it would do is change a sound to a little more bassy, with long team damage to engine..
You can google myths about k&n filters and read for yourself..

              Ride safe and have fun.

If you are looking for Bassy sound, 390 already sounds like one fitted with K&N . Stick with the stock. I guess the Warranty obligations would also be there.

                  Day 3, 116 kms Update

Few interesting observations from someone who's previously been riding a 2003 ZMA. All this electric stuff really amazes me

                  1. Electricals are DC but with a twist I guess. Light goes off a few seconds after hitting the engine kill switch. Even if the lights are switched on they won't light up unless engine is started.
                  2. However if light switches are on and bike is moving above 3 kmph, lights come on automatically even if engine is off!
                  3. Trip mode on speedo that shows trip time and average speed. What's interesting is that it records journey time even if the engine has been switched off,* key removed etc. during the trip. It doesn't reset to zero. Wonder how it works.
                  4. First gear is very jerky till it gets interesting. If you gently release the clutch the bike will putter along at 10 kmph on its own assuming a flat road. If you pull in the clutch fully at this point, revs increase to 2k before settling down back to idling
                  5. Heats up like nobody's business in traffic it was still 2 bars away from top and my ass was on fire!!!
                  6. Very stiff suspension. I don't know how someone managed this bike in spiti. On the series of rumblers on palm Beach road I got screwed!
                  7. Removing the fugly saree guard and rear wheel splash protector was easy enough. The holes for these bolts are empty now though. Thinking of plugging them with one of those colored ones for cheap thrills :P
                  8. Also hit the first problem. It's either chain slack or a loose plastic part on the top of swingarm that's in contact with the chain causing intermittent scary sounds after 4k rpm. Need to get it checked tomorrow.

                  Cheers
                  Sid

I'm the admin of KTM 390 duke owners group, Mumbai. I've had a member with a seized engine because he did a motoman style run in, took it to a top whack of 172kmph during run in with a k&n filter fitted.

Let me clear myths here if what happens when you put an after market filter:
                    1. Air to fuel (AFR) ratio is screwed as more air enters, causing the engine to run leaner.
                    2. This may cause the engine pistons to seize in a worst case scrnario especially during run in.
                    3. Warranty claims won't be entertained by the company.
                    4. Even though the duke has O2 sensors, all stock sensors, including those in superbikes are narrow band ones (they can't compensate exactly for the increase in air as much as required and calibration is as per stick tolerances strictly).
                    5. Wideband sensors are very expensive
                    6. Incase you add an aftermarket filter, the ECU needs to be remapped for a new AFR.
(You may google power commander and power commander auto tune for your reference)
I suggest you stick to stock since this is a new product which is yet to prove it's longevity, durability and endurance in the demanding Indian market.

Another query guys, how about the stock headlight power? Can we change to projector/hid lights? If projector is not advisable please suggest me a good bright bulb for the head light?

I wouldn't suggest HIDs. When you convert your stock headlight assembly with HID, the internal reflection doesn't happen properly in most part because of the filament(s) moving further to the front from the original Halogen light.

If not done correctly, all you'll do is push more light onto the eyes of people ahead of you than the road - Frankly I'd like to clobber such people, especially since I ride at night more often on my trips. It is possible to set it just right, but finding such people, getting it just right would be difficult.

There was an article I'd read long back. Let me see if I can get the link.....

I have been hearing about people replacing the stock bulb with Philips Extreme vision same specification as stock (H4 55W). around 600 bucks. available on all car accessories shops.
                            checkout the Duke 200 thread.

I use a Philips x-treme vision and it is ok.

I noticed only little improvement [20 to 30%] and not 100% as Phillips claim.

And I completed my first service last Saturday...

                              - took Motul 3000 15w 50 and changed the engine oil with mineral again

Now after 1300 kms, started pushing revs all the way up to the limiter in 3rd and 4th gear. Rev is cut off abruptly with a strong jerk each time I hit the rev limiter…Unable to hit the rev limiter in 5 th and 6th gear as the roads are busy. I have not gone past 140 KMPH so far and wondering if this bike can really go until 165. Will try it this weekend in an empty stretch to push the revs all the way up to the limiter in 5th and 6th.

I have a query to fellow 390 owners….I started hearing a small ‘tick tick’ noise in engine [in sync with engine speed / noise] when I crossed my initial 100 kms on the odo. I can hear this prominently when the engine is warm/hot. When I ride, I can hear it clearly whenever I cross any vehicles or ride between vehicles or when I ride on a bridge where there is wall on either side. I thought that this will go away when I changed my oil in intial 300 kms. KTM service engineer also told me that there is nothing to worry. Later, I thought it will go away after my first service and KTM service engineer told me that there is nothing to worry about it. Now I’m wondering if it is caused by loose timing chain or anything related to it. Please advise if anyone else experienced the same.

and a picture of my 390...
