Got the bike at around 25KM's on the odo, I rode her for some more and she rests at 52KM's' starting was easy, 5 kicks with clutch pressed in and the ignition off, 4 normal kicks with the ignition still off, after which I turned the ignition and kicked once when the motor came to life. This is my first motorcycle without a self starter.

3. Idiots hadn't adjusted the clutch adequately there was too much slack, hence I had adjusted the clutch and both brakes before taking her out for a spin, surprisingly the tool kit lacked the adequate size spanner to adjust clutch and brakes, hence I've added it from my collection.

4. With my weight, she needs to cross 40kmph to be able to comfortably be shifted to 4th gear. Overall the ride was fun.

5. My back hurts. Need some getting used to.
Congratulations.
1. Seat removal bolts are on both sides under the side panels. Remove Battery and Air filter side panels to access. A size 10 spanner should help to loosen/tighten the bolts.
Pique242: Congratulations. Idle your vehicle during cold starts for a full minute.

Wish you both a long and safe riding future with your bikes.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I was about to remove the bolts which were under the rear seat but then refrained from removing and tore out the tank bag, less than a day on and there are already some scuff marks on the tank. BTW the instruction manual got me confused at first regarding panel removal, I doubt panel removing process is the same for both CT100 models.

Please do share more experiential tips as it would help us newbies a lot, especially considering that the manual is mostly useless.

A picture of my beauties(Ignore the car).

Just noticed this, guess the SVC had some fun while delivering the bike.

The crank case says 1L, but manual says 900ML. So how much should do you guys refill when changing oil?

Also in the Discover 100 when you're climbing an incline and the motorcycle is close to knocking if we open the throttle past a specific point the timing retards and the bike climbs well, is it the same for CT100?
Mine doesn't have indicator buzzer.

I took the bike on hills today. I could easily cruise in 3rd gear. When the incline got intense I had to shift down to 2nd. No where I felt the bike was getting strained or felt less power. The throttle was always ready to get speed. But I refrained from using it since I'm breaking in the bike.

So I took the bike for a short 30 kms ride today. Terrain comprising of intense traffic, highways, hills, bad roads.

I was feeling a bit down since couple of days coz my bike was missing power sometimes when I hit the throttle. Then I got opined by rk and Ashwin to warm up the engine sufficiently.

How I warmed up the engine?
I turned on the ignition and kicked the bike immediately. (Forgot about pressing the clutch and doing empty kicks.) the engine came to life in single kick, though it felt engine was gasping for air at the beginning. But I left it alone for a minute without touching the throttle. The choke was off from beginning. After a minute I started giving slow throttle, the engine started giving signs of dying. I felt terrible again. I let it sit for another minute in idle. Then again gave slow throttle and it gave signs of dying again, but this time fewer. Then I got a little irritated as my mother was standing besides me and giving bad looks for going for too cheap a bike. I gave a little heavy throttle. The bike roared high, but still missing a few beats in between. I kept doing heavy throttle for 10 seconds. Then I asked mom to wait and went for a small 200m round as I didn't want to embarrass mom if they bike stalled after her sitting. The bike responded well in those 200 metres and I made my mom sit behind me. After that I went to a couple of places for work with my mom, and bike didn't miss a single beat. My mom appreciated the comfortable seat. She sat girlfriend style, not like Aunty style. Especially coming from a gixxer, where my mom couldn't even imagine sitting on it. She's just 5 feet :P

So I comfortably cruised through traffic for my moms work. She was happy to sit behind me.

I dropped her home after the work and took the bike on highway. The bike is a tad little slow for highway traffic. Need to keep a minimum speed of 70 at least. Which I think the bike is capable of. Soon I came off the high way as I didn't want to go above 55kmph.

I went to hills, the roads are super smooth there and the curves are fun to ride. Plus it's a empty stranded place. So I can have fun there. No vehicles. The bike responded very well on the incline. No where I felt the bike got strained or was struggling. Maybe coz I'm a light weight man. Just 55 kgs.

While coming down I turned off the engine and ignition and came down in neutral. Though in middle I felt some burning smell coming from the battery, so I got scared and turned on the engine and then came down in neutral.

The bike handles bad roads quite well, at least much better than gixxer. I ran over small pot holes easily. Manuvering this bike is also way too easy.

On returning home and after parking the bike on center stand and turning off everything I noticed very slight tik tik sound coming from the engine or gear box. Anyone has idea, why this happens?

Competed 150kms and changed oil(don't ask, its a ritual) there was considerable gunk caught by the drain nut. Manual says 10w30, but I've gone for 20W50 as it best suits my riding style and conditions.

The manual says 900ML on change but that's wrong, it's 1L called the Bajaj helpline and service centre and confirmed the same.

Ok. Thanks for the information. But why did you change oil so early? :P

A motorcycle undergoes maximum wear and tear within the first 50kms hence I change oil around 150kms to get rid of the gunk. Hands were dirty hence couldn't snap pics else would've been able to give you a real example, the drain nut had caught enough gunk not to mention the discoloured oil(not the best means of judging oil condition).

If you changed it, good. 1L for change is correct. They (ASC) don't bother for that extra 100ml either, helps them bill for it. The manual isn't wrong.

The assumption is that 100mL of oil still remains despite draining, whereas the capacity of the crankcase is 1L and during an overhaul, all of the oil will end up draining out & hence require complete replacement.

100mL extra will not make a perceptible difference.

About the engine oil you've replaced. 150kms is a judgement call,
your bike- your rules. And changing oil frequently isn't wrong, especially in the running in period. And with the gunk in the drain plug, a very good call.

20W50 is in my opinion, theoretically too thick given manufacturer recommendation of 10W30. I don't know what they have changed in the engine materials/design since the previous generation CT100s, that they changed the recommended oil grade.

During cold starts, a thin oil would coat engine parts and protect it. And the oil film may shear at higher temps increasing the wear and tear.

My logic is that a thin fluid is easier to wade through, but a thicker fluid offers a lot of resistance for you to wade through it & this consumes more energy. [You being engine parts and wading is their movements].

I would recommend that you follow the first minute of Idling the engine religiously.

By the way even I have used a famous brand (it rhymes with Kastrol Bower One) of 20W50 oil (not naming it directly, as I am unsure when it would be considered promotional), for all these years and my engine has borne with me for more than a decade.

(My manufacturer recommended oil was 20W40).

But when I gave it to the Bajaj ASC at Parel, the mechanic had it sent back to me for verification prior to use. Hence ...

Agree with the answer about the silencer cooling sound. It is normal, I know how disturbing it is, I faced it more than a decade back. But my bike is still going strong. So don't worry. Now I get concerned if I don't hear that sound. Hehehe.
I think your fuel air mixture is pretty lean. Please follow the Idling during cold starts. Wait for your scheduled oil change and review later. Don't meddle with carburettor settings and don't let the ASC do it either. After the oil change and a few days after that, you continue to experience the same, then take it up.

I was honestly fine with pouring in only 900ML but the level was too low when viewed from the inspection window, and this was even before idling the motorcycle. Hence the reason why I called up both sources to confirm. Plus a friend of mine did mention that on his bike the crank case says 0.9L which further increased my confusion. But then screw it. Going by inspection window I'm fine with 1L.

Every ML makes a difference based on how long and hard you push the motorcycle. Trust me, I know.

As for changing early, I wouldn't be at peace if I hadn't done that. Currently the motorcycle has completed 300KM's and the oil hasn't discoloured much, plus she has opened up to 65Kmph in final gear without much effort. As for oil grade change 10W30 is preferred due to emissions norms, Honda made the switch as well as Hero Honda a few years ago. Not sure about the specifics as I remember reading the details in an international manual for the CRF230 a few years ago.

Personally it's personal as you'd know which oil would suit you based on your application, during my 800Kms runs with the Discover 100 4G I've had Motul 300V that only lasted 1.3K kms and I've had Elf Gold that has lasted me 2k+ kms. So that's that.

My startup procedure is the same always, 5 kicks with clutch pulled in, 4 with ignition off and 1 with ignition on, followed by not more than 2 mins of idling. Start up wear is definitely a silent killer.

Hi Guys,

Earlier I had my monitor burnt down and I am out of job and a month ago I had an accident. That is why I did not post anything here, I did not have any means to read 100s of threads a day like I always used to on xbhp. Well, now I am fine, got hip injury, not very big, just that I hit the ground on the on the hip joint, got few harsh bruises on the back which are still healing. I hit a lorry from behind, Lorry guy just suddenly went on from speed of 40 to 5 in 1 sec, looks like he was searching for a shop while driving in middle of main-road and he found the shop and suddenly braked. I was at speed of 40 too but could not come to halt in 1 sec and neither could turn to the left-right side of the lorry because of traffic going on same speed, it was main-road hence I could have gotten crushed by vehicles coming from behind if I would have suddenly turned. Anyway, the bike went under the lorry, some guys helped me to get the bike out and as soon it was taken out, the lorry guy sped like lion running behind him and I did not even not the number down because took me a while to get up and understand what just happened.

I applied for insurance and whole story I will cover and update it here once I get the claim settled

Very sad to read what happened with you. It's high time that government shouldn't distribute driving license without taking driver's proper tests. I hope you'll well soon and find a new job.
On the brighter side nothing serious happened to ct100b.
